SSC English First Paper Model Question- 9 English First paper Total Marks - 100 Time : 3 Hours Part - A Reading - 70 Marks Read the passage. Then answer the questions below.       Mainul Islam is a qualified  farmer in  Naogaon. Mr Islam was very brilliant as a student. He took his  higher education from Bangladesh Agricultural University in Mymensingh. He then came back home and started advanced farming. He has two other brothers who are graduates in different disciplines. The specialty of the Islam family is that they all are living in their village and all are renowned in their own fields. Mr. Islam's younger brother, who is a Rajshahi University graduate, is a science teacher in a local school. His youngest brother is a social science graduate who likes to start a local NGO to work for this area. When asked "What makes you decide to stay here in this village?" Mr Islam smiled and said, "Look, it's true that we could leave this village for city life. I could be a banker or my brothers could be bureaucrats. But it didn't attract us. We are sons of this soil. Yes, we have education but does education prepare a person only to be an officer? Don't we have any obligation to the soil that has made us what we are?" He also added that not every educated individual should be a job seeker. He added that since his discipline was agriculture, after his education he took the occupation of a farmer. In response to the question whether they had any frustration living in a village, he confirmed that they were indeed very pleased with their life. He said, "I work in my own farm, stay with my family members, pass time with my old friends, and sleep at my own home. All these count a lot." Mr Islam is right. Many people go to cities and forget or loosen their roots knowingly or unknowingly. Mr Islam and his brothers are great - they haven't forgotten their roots. SSC English First Paper Model Question- 11 English First paper Total Marks - 100 Time : 3 Hours Part - A Reading - 70 Marks Read the passage. Then answer the questions below.     Meherjan lives  in  a  slum  on  the  Sirajgonj  Town  Protection  Embankment.  The  whispering  wind  from  the river Jamuna makes the fire unsteady. The dancing flames remind Meherjan of the turmoil in her life. Not long ago Meherjan had everything--- a family, arable land and cattle. The erosion  of  the  Jamuna  gradually consumed all her land property. It finally claimed her  only  shelter  during  the  last monsoon.  It took the river  only  a  day  to  devour  Meher's house, trees, vegetable garden  and  the bamboo bush.  She had a happy family once. Over the years, she  lost  her  husband  and  her  family  to  diseases  that  cruel  hunger and poverty brought to the family. Now, she is the only one left to live on with the loss and the pain. The greedy Jamuna has shattered her dreams and happiness. There are thousand others waiting to share the same fate like Meherjan. Bangladesh is a land of rivers, some of whose banks overflow or erode during monsoon. Erosion is a harsh reality for the people living along the river banks. During each monsoon many more villages are threatened by the mighty rivers like the Jamuna, the Padma and the Meghna. It is estimated that river erosion makes at least 100,000 people homeless every year in Bangladesh. In fact, river erosion is one of the main dangers caused by climate change. It is a public holiday in almost all the countries of the world. Since the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and the US, the workers in mills and factories had been working a long shift, fourteen or even more hours a day. On May 1st in 1886, inspired by the trade unions, half  of  the  workers  at  the  McCormick  Harvesting  Machine Company in Chicago went on strike demanding an  eight-hour  workday.  Two  days  later,  a  workers' rally was held near  the  McCormick  Harvester  Machine  Company  and about 6000 workers joined it. The rally was addressed by the labour leaders. They urged the workers to stand together, to go on with their struggle and not to give in to their bosses. At one point of the  rally,  some  strike  breakers  started leaving the meeting place. The strikers went down the street to bring them back. Suddenly about 200 policemen attacked them with clubs and revolvers. One striker was killed instantly, five or six others were seriously wounded and many others were injured. The events of May 1, 1886 are a reminder that workers will continue to be exploited until they stand up and speak out to gain better working conditions, better pay and better lives. 1.      Choose the correct answer from the following alternatives.                        1 X 7 = 7 (a)          The word ‘commemorate’ used in the passage means ¾¾ . i.   display                              ii. disguise                          iii. remember                    iv. reunion (b)          The prevailing work-hour of the workers had been very  ¾¾ . i.   tolerable                          ii. short                                iii. lengthy                          iv. expectable (c)          Where is May Day observed today? i.   All over the world         ii. In Bangladesh              iii. In Europe                     iv. A Kind Hearted Boy One day, while making his way home from school, a boy named Ahsanullah witnessed an elderly woman lying senseless on a busy road. With no one else around to offer assistance, the boy quickly sprang into action. Aware of the dangers posed by the speeding buses and trucks plying the road, Ahsanullah, with the help of a passerby, moved the woman to the safety of the footpath. He then promptly summoned a rickshaw and transported the old woman to a nearby hospital. Upon arrival, medical professionals attended to the woman and assured the boy that her condition was not serious. With the aid of their ministrations, the woman soon regained her senses. Having saved the woman's life, Ahsanullah then inquired about her situation. She revealed that she had come to town from a nearby village to beg. The noise of a truck horn had startled her, and she had subsequently fainted. Moved by the woman's plight, the kind-hearted boy then took the woman to his home, where he provided her with sustenance and comfort. In addition, his mother offered the woman some of her old clothes, as well as a sum of money to help her return to her village. Overwhelmed by the boy's compassion and generosity, the woman prayed fervently for his well-being before departing, her heart full of gratitude. Through his selfless actions, Ahsanullah demonstrated that even small acts of kindness can make a significant impact in the lives of others. Moral : A Kind-Hearted Boy Ahsanullah was a schoolboy who always tried to help others. One day, after finishing his classes, he was walking home when he noticed an old woman lying on the road. She was unconscious, and no one was there to help her. The road was very busy, with fast-moving buses and trucks. The woman was in great danger of being run over by a vehicle. Ahsanullah quickly ran to her and, with the help of a passer-by, carefully moved her to the footpath. Then, he called a rickshaw and took her to the nearest hospital. At the hospital, the doctors immediately examined the old woman. After checking her, they assured Ahsanullah that her condition was not serious. She had only fainted from shock. After receiving first aid, she slowly regained consciousness. When the woman opened her eyes, Ahsanullah gently asked about her home and how she had ended up on the road. The old woman explained that she had come from a nearby village to the town to beg. But as she was walking, she suddenly heard the loud sound of a truck horn. The noise frightened her so much that she became dizzy and lost consciousness. Hearing this, Ahsanullah felt pity for the poor woman. He decided to take her to his house. When they arrived, he offered her a good meal, and his mother kindly gave her some old clothes. Seeing Ahsanullah’s kindness, his mother also gave the woman some money to return to her village. The old woman was deeply touched by their kindness. She thanked Ahsanullah and his mother from the bottom of her heart. Before leaving, she prayed for the boy, wishing him a bright and happy future.
