Exclamatory to Assertive

Basic Rules


Rule 1: Use Subject + Verb at the start; "How/What" → "Very"/"Great"

Structure:

  • “How” + adjective → “very” + adjective

  • “What a/an” + noun → “a great” + noun

Examples:

  • Exc: How fortunate you are!

  • Ass: You are very fortunate.

  • Exc: What a fool you are!

  • Ass: You are a great fool.

More Examples:

  • Exc: How beautiful she is!

  • Ass: She is very beautiful.

  • Exc: What a nice painting this is!

  • Ass: This is a great painting.

  • Exc: How strong he is!

  • Ass: He is very strong.

Rule 2: When Subject/Verb is Missing → Use “It is…”

Examples:

  • Exc: What a beautiful scenery!

  • Ass: It is a very beautiful scenery.

  • Exc: What a pity!

  • Ass: It is a great pity.

More Examples:

  • Exc: What an amazing day!

  • Ass: It is a very amazing day.

  • Exc: What a shame!

  • Ass: It is a great shame.

  • Exc: What an excellent idea!

  • Ass: It is a very excellent idea.

Rule 3: "Hurrah/Bravo" → "It is a matter of joy that / We rejoice that"

Examples:

  • Exc: Hurrah! We have won the game.

  • Ass: It is a matter of joy that we have won the game.

More Examples:

  • Exc: Hurrah! Our team has qualified.

  • Ass: We rejoice that our team has qualified.

  • Exc: Bravo! You did it.

  • Ass: It is a matter of joy that you did it.

  • Exc: Hurrah! I got the job.

  • Ass: It is a matter of joy that I got the job.

Rule 4: "Alas" → "It is a matter of sorrow that / We mourn that"

Examples:

  • Exc: Alas! He has failed.

  • Ass: We mourn that he has failed.

More Examples:

  • Exc: Alas! My friend is no more.

  • Ass: It is a matter of sorrow that my friend is no more.

  • Exc: Alas! The poor man died in the accident.

  • Ass: We mourn that the poor man died in the accident.

  • Exc: Alas! I missed the train.

  • Ass: It is a matter of sorrow that I missed the train.

Rule 5: Had / Were / If / Would that → "I wish + Subject + had/were/could"

Examples:

  • Exc: Had I the wings of a bird!

  • Ass: I wish I had the wings of a bird.

  • Exc: Were I a bird!

  • Ass: I wish I were a bird.

  • Exc: If I were young again!

  • Ass: I wish I were young again.

  • Exc: Would that I could be a child!

  • Ass: I wish I could be a child.

More Examples:

  • Exc: Were I rich!

  • Ass: I wish I were rich.

  • Exc: Had he a second chance!

  • Ass: I wish he had a second chance.

  • Exc: Would that I knew the truth!

  • Ass: I wish I knew the truth.




Exclamatory to Assertive 

 

Transform the following sentences into assertive.

  I. What wonderful creature an elephant is!

2. Oh that we two were infants playing!

3. would that we may soon meet!

4. Oh that I were safe at home!

5. Had I the wings of a dove!

6. Fie!He is a traitor.

7. Would that I could fly!

8. How attractive his method of teaching is!

9. How terrible the accident was!

10. What a beautiful bird it is!

11. Would that I could meet her again!

12. How brightly the stars shine!

13. How sweetly the moonlight sleeps upon the bank!

14. To think of our meeting here!

15. Ah! What a sight was there!

23. How correct his pronunciation is!

24.What a piece of work man is!

 25. Oh that I were young again!
