Assertive to Interrogative


Basic Rules:

Rules of Transforming Assertive into Interrogative Sentences:

his will help you master the transformation.

Rule 1: Affirmative → Negative Interrogative

If the sentence is affirmative, change it into negative interrogative.If the sentence is negative, change it into bare (positive) interrogative.

Example 1:Aff: He was very gentle.

Int: Wasn’t he very gentle?

More Examples:

  • Aff: She is very intelligent.

  • Int: Isn’t she very intelligent?

  • Aff: They were excited.

  • Int: Weren’t they excited?

  • Aff: He is not dishonest.

  • Int: Is he dishonest?

Rule 2: No Auxiliary Verb → Use Do/Does/Did

Use do/does/did to make questions. If negative, use don’t/doesn’t/didn’t.

Example 1:Aff: He plays football.

Int: Does he play football?

Example 2:Aff: They did not play football yesterday.

Int: Did they play football yesterday?

More Examples:

  • Aff: You like mangoes.

  • Int: Do you like mangoes?

  • Aff: She sings beautifully.

  • Int: Does she sing beautifully?

  • Aff: He didn’t call me.

  • Int: Did he call me?

Rule 3: 'Never' → 'Ever'

Example 1:Aff: I never drink tea.

Int: Do I ever drink tea?

More Examples:

  • Aff: He never lies.

  • Int: Does he ever lie?

  • Aff: They never visit us.

  • Int: Do they ever visit us?

  • Aff: She never helps others.

  • Int: Does she ever help others?

Rule 4: Everybody / Everyone / All → Who doesn’t/don’t/didn’t

Example 1:Aff: Everybody wishes to be happy.

Int: Who doesn’t wish to be happy?

More Examples:

  • Aff: Everyone wants success.

  • Int: Who doesn’t want success?

  • Aff: All desire peace.

  • Int: Who doesn’t desire peace?

  • Aff: Everybody loves freedom.

  • Int: Who doesn’t love freedom?

Rule 5: Every + noun → Is there any + noun + who doesn’t/don’t/didn’t

Example 1:Aff: Every man wishes to be happy.

Int: Is there any man who doesn’t wish to be happy?

More Examples:

  • Aff: Every student wants to pass.

  • Int: Is there any student who doesn’t want to pass?

  • Aff: Every mother loves her child.

  • Int: Is there any mother who doesn’t love her child?

  • Aff: Every teacher helps students.

  • Int: Is there any teacher who doesn’t help students?

Rule 6: Nobody / No one / None → Who

Example 1:Aff: Nobody could count my love for you.

Int: Who could ever count my love for you?

More Examples:

  • Aff: No one helped me in trouble.

  • Int: Who helped me in trouble?

  • Aff: Nobody knows the truth.

  • Int: Who knows the truth?

  • Aff: None supported her.

  • Int: Who supported her?

Rule 7: There is no → Is there any / Who / What

Example 1:Aff: There is no use of this law.

Int: What is the use of this law?

Example 2:Aff: There is no man happier than Jamil.

Int: Who is happier than Jamil?

More Examples:

  • Aff: There is no way to escape.

  • Int: What is the way to escape?

  • Aff: There is no student better than Rafi.

  • Int: Who is better than Rafi?

  • Aff: There is no point in arguing.

  • Int: What is the point in arguing?

Rule 8: It is no → Why / Is there any

Example 1:Aff: It is no use of taking unfair means in the exam.

Int: Why take unfair means in the exam?(Or: Is there any use of taking unfair means in the exam?)

More Examples:

  • Aff: It is no use crying over spilt milk.

  • Int: Why cry over spilt milk?

  • Aff: It is no good blaming others.

  • Int: Why blame others?

  • Aff: It is no use waiting here.

  • Int: Why wait here?

Rule 9: It doesn’t matter → What though / Does it matter

Example 1:Aff: It doesn’t matter if you fail in the exam.

Int: What though if you fail in the exam?

More Examples:

  • Aff: It doesn’t matter if he is late.

  • Int: What though if he is late?

  • Aff: It doesn’t matter if they disagree.

  • Int: What though if they disagree?

  • Aff: It doesn’t matter if you lose the game.

  • Int: What though if you lose the game?

Assertive to Interrogative


Transform the following sentences into Interrogative

 

1.      My friend invited me to pay a visit to Cox's Bazar.

2.      He goes to school in time.

3.    He is a liability to the society.

4.    She did not give up hope.

5.    Everybody dislikes him.

6.      Everybody respects a truthful person.

7.      We are proud of our freedom fighters.

8.      No man can live alone.

9.      The educated people should teach the illiterate.

10.  She passed her time in reading and writing.

11.  He and his wife Isabella were hardworking.

12.  Punctuality gives a good start of our day's work.

13.  Walking bears a good effect both on body and mind.

14.  The monsoon causes heavy rainfall.

15.  It is the duty of the educated people to educate the illiterate.

16.  Each and every shop was laden with attractive nick-nacks.

17.  The house faces the south.

18.  Everybody knows a day labourer.

22.  It is the duty of the literate to educate the illiterate.

23.  The tower symbolizes the loftiness of the spirit of the martyred freedom fighters.

24.  Corruption destroys the moral courage of our young people.
