Assertive Sentences into Exclamatory Sentences

 Basic Rules

 

Rule 1: Transforming Assertive Sentences into Exclamatory Sentences (Using "What" or "How")

To change an assertive sentence into an exclamatory one, use the following structure:

Structure:What (a/an) + how + adjective/adverb + subject + verb + the rest of the sentence + exclamation mark (!)

  • Note: Use "a" or "an" after "what" if the assertive sentence has "a" or "an" before the adjective.

Examples:

  • Assertive: It is a very fine bird.


    Exclamatory: What a fine bird it is!

  • Assertive: The bird is very fine.


    Exclamatory: How fine the bird is!

  • Assertive: The sun shines very terribly.


    Exclamatory: How terribly the sun shines!

  • Assertive: She sings beautifully.


    Exclamatory: How beautifully she sings!

  • Assertive: The weather is quite cold.


    Exclamatory: What a cold weather it is!

Rule 2: Transforming Assertive Sentences with "It is a matter of joy that" into Exclamatory Sentences

When the assertive sentence starts with "It is a matter of joy that," change it to an exclamatory sentence using the following structure:

Structure:Hurrah! + rest of the sentence + exclamation mark (!)

Examples:

  • Assertive: It is a matter of joy that he has made a brilliant result.


    Exclamatory: Hurrah! He has made a brilliant result!

  • Assertive: It is a matter of joy that we have completed the project.


    Exclamatory: Hurrah! We have completed the project!

  • Assertive: It is a matter of joy that they passed the exam.


    Exclamatory: Hurrah! They passed the exam!

  • Assertive: It is a matter of joy that the team won the match.


    Exclamatory: Hurrah! The team won the match!

Rule 3: Transforming Assertive Sentences with "It is a matter of sorrow that" into Exclamatory Sentences

For assertive sentences starting with "It is a matter of sorrow that," change them to exclamatory sentences by using this structure:

Structure:Alas! + rest of the sentence + exclamation mark (!)

Examples:

  • Assertive: It is a matter of sorrow that his son has died.


    Exclamatory: Alas! His son has died.

  • Assertive: It is a matter of sorrow that the company is closing down.


    Exclamatory: Alas! The company is closing down.

  • Assertive: It is a matter of sorrow that the city is flooded.


    Exclamatory: Alas! The city is flooded.

  • Assertive: It is a matter of sorrow that we have lost the match.


    Exclamatory: Alas! We have lost the match.

Rule 4: Transforming Assertive Sentences with "I wish" into Exclamatory Sentences

When an assertive sentence includes "I wish," you can convert it into an exclamatory sentence by using If, Would that, or Had:

Structure:If / Would that / Had + subject + rest of the sentence + exclamation mark (!)

Examples:

  • Assertive: I wish I were a rich man.


    Exclamatory: If I were a rich man!

  • Assertive: I wish I had the wings of a bird.


    Exclamatory: Had I the wings of a bird!

  • Assertive: I wish I could travel the world.


    Exclamatory: If only I could travel the world!

  • Assertive: I wish I knew the answer.


    Exclamatory: Would that I knew the answer!

  • Assertive: I wish I were at the party.


    Exclamatory: If I were at the party!



Exercise:

Assertive to Exclamatory

Transform the following sentences into exclamatory.

1. Today’s doctors are very conscious of their career.

2. The tiger is very ferocious.

3. We rejoice that we have won the game.

 4. It is a matter of pride that the little boy saved the train from an accident.

5. It is a matter of sorrow that SIDR has taken everything of him.

6. I wish I were a freedom fighter.

7. The flower looks very fine.

8. The rose smells very sweet.

9. The dead bodies were very obnoxious.

10. He wishes he could get back his lost health.

11. We wish he were alive today.

12. It is a matter of joy that I’ve got golden GPA-5.

 13. It is shameful that he does not take care of his old parents.

14. The woman wished she could get back her lost son to life.

15. The Taj looks very majestic.

16. The car runs very fast.

17. The clock goes very slow.

18. I wish I were a millionaire.

19. I wish I could be as humble as Nasiruddin.

20. The building looks very splendid.

 21. The boy seems to be very polite.

22. The mangoes taste very sour.

23. The oranges look very fresh.

 24. He wishes he were a magician.

25. The chief guest delivered a very fiery speech.

26. The water is very much polluted.
