COMPARATIVE INTO POSITIVE

Rule 1. Comparative Degree with "than any other/all other" can be changed into positive degree by using the following rule

W No other +

(ii)  the rest part after any other/ all other +

(iii)  verb +

(iv)   so / as +

(v)  positive form of the comparative degree +

(vi)   as +

(vii)   subject of the given sentence.

Comparative : Rubel is richer than any other man in the village.

Positive : No other man in the village is as rich as Rubel.

Comparative : Dhaka is larger than all other cities in Bangladesh.

Positive : No other city in Bangladesh as large as Dhaka.

Or, No other cities in Bangladesh are as large as Dhaka.

Rule 2. Comparative Degree with "than" can be changed into positive degree as per the following structure.

(i) the part after than of the given sentence + 00 verb +

(iii)  not (if the given sentence is affii i iiative but not is omitted if the sentence is negative)

(iv)   so / as +

(v)  positive form of the comparative degree +

(vi)   as +

(vii)  first subject of the given sentence.

Comparative : Jamil is wiser than Hasan.

Positive : Hasan is not as wise as Jamil.

Comparative : A plane flies faster than a bird.

Positive : A bird does not fly as fast as a plane.

Rule 3. Comparative Degree with "than most other/ than few other than many other" can be changed into positive degree by using the following structure:

(i)   Very few +

(ii)  the rest part after other +

(iii)  plural form of the verb +

(iv)   so / as +

(v)  positive form of the comparative degree +

(vi)   as +

(vii)   subject of the given sentence.

Comparative : The cow is more useful than most other animals.

Positive : Very few animals are as useful as the cow.

Rule 4: Comparative Degree with "no less/ not less.... than" can be changed into positive degree by using 'as' in place of 'no less / not less' and 'as' in place of than (by using as------------------------- as) :

Comparative : He is no less strong than you.

Positive : He is as strong as you.

Comparative : Nipa is no less clever than Deeba.

Positive : Nipa is as clever as Deeba.

Note : In case of only less .............  than„ not as is used in place of less and as is used in place of than.

Comparative : He is less stupid than his brother.

Positive : He is not as stupid as his brother.

2. This road is muddier than that.

3. Summer is drier than any other season in Bangladesh.

4. He is lovelier than very few persons.

5. Village life is quieter than city life.

9. Milk is more nutritious than any other food.

COMPARATIVE INTO POSITIVE

Turn the following sentences into positive

1. The days in the winter are foggier than those of other seasons.

The days of other seasons are not so foggy as those of winter.

2. This road is muddier than that.

That road is not so muddy as this road.

3. Summer is drier than any other season in Bangladesh.

No other season is so dry as summer in Bangladesh.

4. He is lovelier than very few persons.

Very few persons are not as lovely as he.

5. Village life is quieter than city life.

City life is not so quiet as village life.

6. Bangladesh is more fertile than most other lands in the world.

Very few land in the world are as fertile as Bangladesh.

7. This is safer than any other place.

No other place is so safe as this.

8. My shirt is dirtier than yours.
