✅ How to Change Superlative Degree into Comparative Degree
🔹 Rule 1: When the Superlative Refers to One Specific Item (Without “One of the”)
Structure:Subject + verb + comparative form of the adjective + than any other + [rest of the sentence].
Explanation:Use “than any other” when the superlative is referring to “the best of any” or “the highest of any” in a group.
Examples:
Superlative: He is the oldest man in the village.
Comparative: He is older than any other man in the village.
Superlative: Maradona is the best footballer we have ever seen.
Comparative: Maradona is better than any other footballer we have ever seen.
Superlative: She is the fastest runner on the team.
Comparative: She is faster than any other runner on the team.
Superlative: This is the most beautiful painting in the gallery.
Comparative: This painting is more beautiful than any other painting in the gallery.
Superlative: It turns the prettiest of any wood.
Comparative: It turns prettier than any other wood.
📝 Note on Usage:
Use “than any other” when the superlative implies “of any”.
Use “than all other” when the superlative implies “of all”.
Examples for “of all” → “than all other”:
Superlative: Mr. Rahman is the noblest of all men.
Comparative: Mr. Rahman is nobler than all other men.
Superlative: This is the tallest building of all in the city.
Comparative: This building is taller than all other buildings in the city.
Superlative: He is the cleverest of all the students.
Comparative: He is cleverer than all other students.
🔹 Rule 2: When the Sentence Contains “One of the...”
Structure:Subject + verb + comparative form of the adjective + than most other / many other / few other + [rest of the sentence].
Explanation:Use this when the superlative degree implies that the subject is among the top, but not the single best.
Examples:
Superlative: Fahim is one of the tallest boys in the class.
Comparative: Fahim is taller than most other boys in the class.
Superlative: This is one of the most interesting books I have read.
Comparative: This book is more interesting than most other books I have read.
Superlative: She is one of the smartest girls in the school.
Comparative: She is smarter than many other girls in the school.
Superlative: It is one of the coldest days of the year.
Comparative: It is colder than most other days of the year.
Superlative: He is one of the best teachers in the college.
Comparative: He is better than most other teachers in the college.
