✅ Complex to Compound Sentence Transformation
🔹 Rule 1: Complex Sentence with “Since / As / When” → Compound using “and”
Rule:Omit since / as / when, keep the sentence in the same tense, and connect the clauses using “and.”
Explanation:The subordinating conjunction (since/as/when) is removed and replaced with “and” to show a sequence or cause-effect in compound form.
Structure:[Clause 1] and [Clause 2]
Example:
Complex: Since he was poor, he could not buy a good shirt.
Compound: He was poor and could not buy a good shirt.
Additional Examples:
Complex: As it was raining, we stayed indoors.
Compound: It was raining and we stayed indoors.
Complex: When the train arrived, we got in.
Compound: The train arrived and we got in.
Complex: Since she was tired, she went to bed early.
Compound: She was tired and she went to bed early.
🔹 Rule 2: Complex Sentence with “Though / Although” → Compound using “but / yet”
Rule:Omit though / although, and connect the two ideas with “but” or “yet.”
Explanation:This transformation shows contrast using coordinating conjunctions.
Structure:[Clause 1], but / yet [Clause 2]
Example:
Complex: Though he studied hard, he failed in the exam.
Compound: He studied hard, but he failed in the exam.
Additional Examples:
Complex: Although she is rich, she lives simply.
Compound: She is rich, but she lives simply.
Complex: Though the road was bad, they travelled safely.
Compound: The road was bad, yet they travelled safely.
Complex: Although the boy was honest, nobody trusted him.
Compound: The boy was honest, but nobody trusted him.
🔹 Rule 3: Complex Sentence with Relative Pronoun (“who”, “which”, “that”) → Compound using “and”
Rule:Replace the relative pronoun with “and”, and turn the relative clause into an independent clause. Use a suitable subject in the second clause.
Structure:Main clause + and + second clause (rephrased)
Example:
Complex: He bought a pen which was costly.
Compound: He bought a pen and it was costly.
Additional Examples:
Complex: She saw a man who was crying.
Compound: She saw a man and he was crying.
Complex: They built a house that is very beautiful.
Compound: They built a house and it is very beautiful.
Complex: I have a phone which has a good camera.
Compound: I have a phone and it has a good camera.
🔹 Rule 4: Complex with “If”
A. Negative Condition (If...not) → Use “or”
Rule:Omit “if” and “not”, and begin with the main verb followed by “or” + the second clause.
Example:
Complex: If you do not move, you will die.
Compound: Move or you will die.
Additional Examples:
Complex: If you do not study, you will fail.
Compound: Study or you will fail.
Complex: If we do not hurry, we will miss the show.
Compound: Hurry or we will miss the show.
Complex: If you do not exercise, you will get sick.
Compound: Exercise or you will get sick.
B. Affirmative Condition → Use “and”
Rule:Keep the verb as it is, drop “if”, and connect both parts using “and.”
Example:
Complex: If you run fast, you can win the prize.
Compound: Run fast and you can win the prize.
Additional Examples:
Complex: If you follow the rules, you will succeed.
Compound: Follow the rules and you will succeed.
Complex: If you eat well, you will stay healthy.
Compound: Eat well and you will stay healthy.
Complex: If you listen carefully, you will understand the lesson.
Compound: Listen carefully and you will understand the lesson.
🔹 Rule 5: “So...that” (showing result) → Use “very...and”
Rule:Replace “so...that” with “very”, and use “and” before the result.
Example:
Complex: The boy is so weak that he cannot walk.
Compound: The boy is very weak and he cannot walk.
Additional Examples:
Complex: The tea was so hot that I could not drink it.
Compound: The tea was very hot and I could not drink it.
Complex: The question was so hard that I could not answer it.
Compound: The question was very hard and I could not answer it.
Complex: The room was so dark that we couldn’t see anything.
Compound: The room was very dark and we couldn’t see anything.
🔹 Rule 6: “So that” (indicating intention or purpose) → Compound with “and so”
Rule:Turn the purpose clause into an independent clause using “want/wanted” and join using “and so.”
Example:
Complex: He reads more so that he can get good marks.
Compound: He wants to get good marks and so he reads more.
Additional Examples:
Complex: She works hard so that she can support her family.
Compound: She wants to support her family and so she works hard.
Complex: They came early so that they could get seats.
Compound: They wanted to get seats and so they came early.
Complex: I save money so that I can travel.
Compound: I want to travel and so I save money.
🔹 Rule 7: “That”-Clause → Rearranged with “and”
Rule:Change the noun clause introduced by “that” into a separate sentence and connect with “and.”
Example:
Complex: We know that he is honest.
Compound: He is honest and we know it.
Additional Examples:
Complex: I am sure that he will come.
Compound: He will come and I am sure of it.
Complex: The teacher said that the boy was clever.
Compound: The boy was clever and the teacher said it.
Complex: She believed that her brother would win.
Compound: Her brother would win and she believed it.

Turn the following complex sentences into compound.
1. It is social evil which hampers the progress of social life.
2. Though they are coward, they are very clever bird.
3. Since Neela did not have a good dinner, she could not sleep.
4.Though there were clouds in the sky, they were swept away by the wind.
5. Though she searched for such a house, she could not find any.
6. Generally, it has a platform on which fish-sellers sit with their fishes.
7. Though a healthy man is an asset to his family, an unhealthy man is a liability.
8. When I reached there, my friend received me cordially.
9. As the students get a long vacation from schools, they enjoy the festival with childlike mirth.
