  • O Me ! O Life ! - Seen Comprehension / Poem - Multiple Choice & Short Question for SSC English First Paper - English for Today

O Me! O Life! By Walt Whitman Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring, Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish, Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?) Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d, Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me, Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined, The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?                                        Answer. That you are here—that life exists and identity, That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. Paraphrasing Stanza 1 (The Question) Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring, → Oh, my life! Oh, my thoughts! These same deep and painful questions keep coming to my mind over and over again. I keep wondering about the meaning and purpose of my existence. Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish, → I see so many people who do not have true belief in anything—neither in themselves, nor in others, nor in life itself. There are countless people moving through life without direction or sincerity. The cities are full of people who act foolishly, who chase after meaningless things without understanding what truly matters. Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?) → I constantly blame and criticize myself for my own weaknesses and failures. I wonder if anyone is more foolish or unfaithful than I am. I feel lost, unsure of my beliefs, and I doubt my own ability to find meaning in life. Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d, → I see people desperately searching for knowledge, truth, and purpose, but they do not find what they are looking for. Their eyes are hungry for understanding, yet they remain in darkness. Around me, everything seems meaningless and ordinary. The struggles of life never end—they keep coming back again and again. Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me, → People work hard, they struggle, but in the end, their efforts bring very little success. The results of their labor often feel disappointing. I see people moving through life slowly and tiredly, caught in routines, their spirits weighed down by their daily struggles. Many of them live in an ugly, corrupted way, without joy or meaning. Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined, → I feel that the lives of so many people are wasted—full of empty, meaningless years. They live without purpose, without passion. And I am connected to them—I, too, feel trapped in this same cycle of emptiness. I wonder if my life is just as pointless as theirs. The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life? → This painful question keeps returning to me—what is the point of living in such a world? What good is there in life when everything seems hopeless, when people around me live without meaning? I ask myself if there is any purpose to my existence at all. Stanza 2 (The Answer) That you are here—that life exists and identity, → The answer is simple yet powerful: You are alive. Life itself exists. You have an identity, a purpose, and a place in this world. Even if everything seems dark and meaningless, the fact that you are here, that you exist, is enough to give life value. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. → Life is like a great and powerful drama, an ongoing play that never stops. No matter what happens, the story of life continues. And the most important thing is that you have a chance to play a role in it. You can contribute your own verse—you can add your own meaning, your own story, to this great play of life. Even if you feel small or unimportant, what you do matters. You have the power to shape your own life and to make a difference in the world. Short Answer Questions i. What is the main theme of the poem? The main theme of the poem is the poet's existential reflection on the struggles, uncertainties, and disappointments of life. He questions the purpose and value of life in the face of recurring hardships, faithlessness, and the seeming futility of human existence. ii. What recurring questions does the poet mention? The poet mentions recurring questions about the meaning and purpose of life, the continuous struggles people face, and whether anything good can come from these challenges. Specifically, he asks: "What good amid these, O me, O life?" iii. What does the poet mean by 'useless years'? The poet refers to 'useless years' as the years of life that seem to have no purpose or meaningful outcome. These are years where a person might feel disconnected, stagnant, or unsuccessful in achieving their goals or fulfilling their potential. iv. Is age an identity marker? What are the attributes of old age? Age can be an identity marker, as it often determines a person's experiences, wisdom, and societal role. In the poem, while age is not explicitly discussed, 'useless years' could be interpreted as those years that are often associated with the regrets or unfulfilled aspects of aging. Attributes of old age may include reflection, wisdom, weariness, and perhaps a sense of having missed opportunities. v. What do 'sordid' and 'plodding' mean? 'Sordid' means dirty, immoral, or involving dishonorable actions. 'Plodding' means slow, laborious, or unglamorous movement, often associated with mundane and repetitive tasks. vi. What 'faith' does the poet mention here? The poet mentions the faithlessness of people, implying that many live without a clear sense of purpose or belief. However, by questioning the faithlessness, he indirectly points to the importance of having some form of faith or meaning to guide one's life. vii. Is there a symbolic meaning of 'contribute a verse' in the last line? Yes, 'contribute a verse' symbolically means that despite the struggles and seemingly futile nature of life, each individual can still have an impact or make a meaningful contribution. It suggests that every person, through their actions or expression, can contribute to the larger story of life. viii. Do you find the answer section of the poem convincing? The answer section is quite convincing as it offers a sense of hope and purpose in response to the poet's existential questioning. It acknowledges the struggles and uncertainties of life but encourages the individual to see their presence and contribution as valuable. It highlights that despite life's challenges, the very existence of life and the possibility of making a contribution are reasons to find meaning. D. Pair work: Contractions Contractions in the poem (like 'fill'd' and 'reneiv'd') are forms where the poet shortens words by omitting letters, usually to maintain rhythm, style, or for poetic effect. O Life!" by Walt Whitman This poem talks about the difficulties and disappointments of life. The poet feels sad and hopeless when he looks at the world around him. He sees people who are foolish and dishonest. Many of them do not have strong beliefs or good values. The poet also feels disappointed in himself because he has made mistakes and has not always been wise. Everywhere he looks, he sees people struggling with life. Many people work hard, but their efforts seem useless. They live without any real purpose. Life feels empty and meaningless to him. He wonders why he is here and what good life really has. He keeps asking himself this question again and again. Then, he finds an answer. He realizes that simply being alive is important. Life exists, and every person has their own identity. The world is like a great play that never stops. Everyone has a small but important part in it. Even if life is full of struggles, everyone can add something special to the world. The poet reminds us that our actions, words, and ideas matter. This gives life a true meaning. Bangla Translation Oh me! • A Wolf and A Lamb/ Any excuse can do for an evil doer: Once there was a small lamb   (Story Writing)

A Wolf and A Lamb once lived a small lamb. The lamb was a playful creature and spent its days frolicking carelessly in the fields. Despite its parents' warnings about the dangers of wild animals, the lamb remained heedless of the risks and continued to roam carelessly. One day, while quenching its thirst at a nearby river, the lamb noticed a menacing wolf drinking upstream. Despite its fear, the lamb continued to drink water, oblivious to the threat lurking nearby. The wolf, with its mouth watering at the sight of the lamb, was determined to find an excuse to attack the innocent creature.   To achieve this, the wolf, with a mischievous glint in its eye, spoke to the lamb in a condescending tone, "O lamb, why are you making the water muddy by drinking it when you see that I am drinking here?" The lamb, who had done nothing wrong, answered with naive innocence, "Sir, how can I make the water muddy? It comes down from you to me, not from me to you." The wolf, unable to fault the lamb's logic, was frustrated, but not deterred.   After a brief moment, the wolf sought another excuse to pounce on the lamb, and said, "Why did you call me names last year?" The lamb, even more humbly and innocently, replied, "Sir, I was not even born last year, how could I have called you names?" The wolf, again unable to refute the lamb's response, was increasingly irked, but resolved to continue his quest for a reason to attack the lamb.   Finally, unable to find any legitimate excuse to harm the innocent creature, the wolf decided to attack the lamb with brute force. He exclaimed, "Then it was your father or mother or someone else. You must suffer for their rudeness." The wolf pounced on the lamb, tearing it apart and devouring it in one fell swoop.   This fable teaches us a valuable lesson about the dangers of evil-doers and powerful villains who seek to harm us for no reason. It is imperative that we take precautions and safeguard ourselves against the malicious intentions of such individuals, lest we suffer the fate of the poor lamb who lost its life for no fault of its own. Moral :  Complete the following story following the cue Once it was a very hot day of summer. A wolf became very thirsty. It came to a stream for drinking water. While the wolf was drinking water in the stream, it saw a lamb drinking water front the downstream Ans.                      The Weak Are Always Oppressed Once it was a very hot day of summer. A wolf became Very thirsty. It came to a stream for drinking water. While the wolf was drinking water in the stream, it saw a lamb drinking water from the downstream. When the wicket wolf saw the innocent lamb, it became greedy to eat its flesh. So the wolf made an evil plan to kill the lamb. It accused the lamb of making the water dirty. The sincere lamb was very surprised and shocked at this. The lamb then asked the -wolf how it could make the water dirty for it because it was drinking water from the downstream. The strong wolf got angry at its remark and at once it attacked the weak lamb. The lamb was killed by the strong wolf. Then the greedy wolf satisfied its hunger with the delicious flesh of the innocent lamb. In our society there are many powerful wicket men who always harm the innocent and the weak showing any lame excuse to satisfy their own interest. None should do any harm to anybody. It is a great sin. A wrong doer is hated everywhere. Allah will also punish him in the next world.       The wicked Wolf   On a sunny day, a young lamb was grazing gladly at the foot of a small hill. At that time he felt the necessity of drinking water. So it began to look to and fro in order to find out water. Then it found a little stream coming down from the top of the hill . It walked there to drink water. A wolf lived in the bush of the hill. He, on some reasons, came out of the bush. He thought to himself. “What a healthy lamb it is! Its flesh would be very nice. So I shall make a good meal of it.   The wicked wolf went to the lamb. He said to it angrily “You young rascal. Why do you make the water dirty? Don’t you know that I can not drink muddy water?” “No sir”, replied the lamb. The water flows past you before it comes to me. I am standing down the stream,” So saying it began to tremble in fear.   As the wolf was very wicked, it was not difficult for him to find out a proper plea to kill it. So he found out another plea for killing it.   The wolf said, “All right, you did not make the water dirty, but you called me names one year ago.” The lamb was trembling in fear. He said, “Believe me, sir, I was born only six months back. How could I rebuke you?” Then the wolf said, “Then your mother did that and for that I would punish you.” Saying so, he killed the young lamb and ate its flesh.   Hearing this, the mother of the lamb rushed to the spot and started howling, “Why have you killed my innocent child? How could you be so cruel?” Then the Bear said, “Don’t say I am cruel. I can now easily kill you. But instead of doing so, I am leaving this place. So, you should be grateful to me.”

An Ungrateful Wolf and a Crane Once upon a time, there was a lazy wolf living in a jungle. Near his house was a pond. Many animals came to the pond to drink water. The wolf was always in search of food. One day, he was sitting near the pond hoping to get something to eat. When suddenly he spotted a dead bull. “Aha! What a luck! Now I can eat all I want,” he thought and his mouth strated watering. He began to eat the bull. A thought struck him, “if another beast comes this way he will ask for a share. I had better eat fast.” ‘Grub! Grub! Grub! Grub1’ he chewed, faster and faster. In his haste, a piece of bone got stuck in his throat. “Ohh! Errk!” cried the wolf. He tried to bring it out of his mouth. He tried to cough it out but in vain. Next, he tried to swallow it down but he failed. “Ooh, the bone in throat hurts. What shall I do now?” thought the wolf. One day, while walking along the shore, the hare saw a crocodile. He politely asked the crocodile if he could ask a question. The crocodile, happy to help, gave him permission. The hare asked, “How many crocodiles are there in the sea?” The crocodile, unable to answer because there were so many crocodiles, told the hare that he didn’t know. The hare thought of a clever plan to get across to the other island with the help of the crocodiles. He suggested to the crocodile that he could help count the number of crocodiles. The crocodile agreed. The hare asked the crocodiles to line up one after another so he could count them. The crocodile was amazed by the hare’s idea and called all the other crocodiles. They lined up in a long row, which stretched almost to the next island. The hare then rode on the back of one crocodile and instructed the others not to move. He jumped from one crocodile to the next, counting each one as he went along. Finally, when he reached the last crocodile, he found himself on the other island. From there, he shouted, “There are one hundred and ninety-nine crocodiles!” He also told the crocodiles that he had reached a new island, which was now home to another hare, and he was no longer lonely. After their father’s death, they inherited three things — a cow, a palm tree and a blanket. They were Ali and Bashir. Ali, the younger was being exploited by the elder brother, Bashir. Bashir was very cunning. Ali was very simple. He was obedient to his elder brother. The things they inherited were divided between the two brothers. Bashir himself chose the profitable share. He took lower part of the cow and upper part of the palm tree. The time of using the blanket was also fixed. He used it at night and left it for Ali at day time. As a result Ali fed the cow all day long and watered the palm tree regularly. Bashir milked the cow and drank alone. He also ate the palms grown in the tree and drank the juice alone. Ali was deprived of milk, palms and juice. Moreover, he could not use the blanket, because it was unnecessary at day time. A wise man noticed that Bashir was growing fatter day by day and Ali was becoming thinner. He asked Ali about the cause behind it. Ali told him the story of sharing and caring of their wealth. The wise man whispered something into Ali's ears. Then Ali made up his mind to teach Bashir a good lesson. He began to whip the cow on its head while Bashir was milking. At this Bashir failed to milk the cow. Ali attempted to cut the tree just when Bashir was climbing it to take the juice. He also kept the blanket wet in the evening so that Bashir could not use it at night. In these circumstances, Bashir realized his faults and agreed to share everything equally with Ali.   The Story of Two Brothers Once, there lived two brothers in a small village. After their father passed away, they inherited three things — a cow, a palm tree, and a blanket. The younger brother, Ali, was very simple and obedient, while the elder brother, Bashir, was clever and cunning. The two brothers divided the inheritance between them. However, Bashir, being greedy, took the more profitable parts for himself. He took the lower part of the cow, which produced milk, and the upper part of the palm tree, which bore delicious fruits. Bashir also decided when to use the blanket, keeping it for himself at night and leaving it for Ali only during the day. As a result, Ali worked hard all day, feeding the cow and watering the palm tree, while Bashir enjoyed the milk and fruit by himself. Ali was deprived of the milk, the fruits, and even the juice from the tree. He couldn’t even use the blanket during the cold nights, as it was reserved for Bashir. Over time, a wise man in the village noticed that Bashir was getting fatter and healthier, while Ali was growing thinner and weaker. Concerned, the wise man asked Ali what was happening. Ali explained the unfair way their father’s possessions were divided and how Bashir was exploiting him. The wise man whispered some advice into Ali’s ear, and Ali decided it was time to teach Bashir a lesson. The next day, while Bashir was milking the cow, Ali started whipping the cow on its head, causing Bashir to fail in milking it properly. The following day, when Bashir climbed the tree to collect the juice, Ali began to cut the tree, disrupting Bashir's work. Finally, in the evening, Ali soaked the blanket in water, making it impossible for Bashir to use it that night. Bashir soon realized that his selfishness was causing him discomfort, and he understood the mistake he had made. He decided to change his ways and agreed to share everything equally with Ali from that moment on. Through Ali’s clever actions, both brothers learned the value of fairness and sharing. They realized that living in harmony and equality was much better than exploiting each other. The eagle, intrigued by the tortoise's request, responded kindly. "I can help you experience flight," said the eagle. He flew down and instructed the tortoise to hold onto his legs. The tortoise eagerly grabbed the eagle's legs, and they took off into the sky. As they soared higher and higher, the tortoise felt a mix of excitement and fear. He had never been so high before, and the sensation was overwhelming. The eagle flew swiftly, and the tortoise struggled to hold on. Eventually, he couldn't maintain his grip and fell, plummeting down toward the ground. Luckily, the tortoise landed on soft grass in the woods, cushioned by his hard shell. Though he was shaken, he was not seriously hurt. This experience taught the tortoise a valuable lesson. From that day on, he accepted his limitations and stopped longing for things beyond his reach. He no longer envied the birds and their ability to fly. Instead, he embraced his own strengths and was content with the life he had.   An Intelligent Tortoise One day, a thirsty tiger was drinking water from a river when he noticed a slow-moving tortoise nearby. The tiger was feeling hungry, so with a quick jump, he caught the tortoise in his strong paws. The tiger tried to crush the tortoise’s hard shell with his sharp teeth, but no matter how hard he bit, the shell did not break. He tried again and again, but the result was the same—the shell remained unbreakable. Frustrated, the tiger growled, "Your shell is too strong! But I know how to get rid of you! I will throw you into the fire!" The tortoise felt afraid, but he was also clever. Without showing his fear, he calmly said, "Oh, that's no problem, Sir! Fire is my friend. It keeps me warm and safe." The foolish tiger did not realize that the tortoise was tricking him. He asked again, "So, you are not afraid of fire?" The tortoise replied, "Not at all! Fire loves me, and I love fire." Hearing this, the tiger became angry. He wanted to punish the tortoise in a way that would make him suffer. He thought for a moment and then said, "Then I will throw you into the river instead!" Hearing this, the tortoise felt very happy, but he did not show it. Instead, he pretended to be terrified and cried out, "Oh no! Please don’t throw me into the water! I will surely drown and die!" The foolish tiger laughed loudly, thinking he had finally found a way to get rid of the tortoise. Without another thought, he threw the tortoise into the river. As soon as the tortoise hit the water, he happily swam away. The tiger watched in shock, realizing too late that he had been tricked. The Christran General was Richard the first of England. He was a brave man and a fierce enemy of Sultan Salahuddin. In one of his fights, a Muslim soldier knocked him off his horse but he got up and started fighting on foot. One of Salahuddin’s men saw this and shouted to Salahuddin, “Richard has lost his horse. The Greatness of Sultan Salahuddin Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi , also known as Saladin , was one of the greatest Muslim rulers in history. He was famous for his bravery, wisdom, and kindness . He led the Muslims during the Crusades  and became a symbol of justice and mercy . One of the most remarkable stories of his greatness took place after the Battle of Hattin  in 1187 . Salahuddin’s army defeated the Crusaders and recaptured Jerusalem , a city that had been under Christian rule for nearly a century. Unlike the Crusaders, who had killed thousands of innocent people when they captured the city earlier, Salahuddin showed extraordinary mercy . He forgave  the defeated enemies and allowed them to leave safely. Even when his soldiers wanted revenge, he told them, “We must not take the path of cruelty.” Another example of his nobility was seen when King Richard the Lionheart , his greatest enemy, fell ill during the war. Instead of taking advantage of his weakness, Salahuddin sent his personal doctor  to treat him and even provided him with food and medicine. This act of kindness amazed King Richard, and he developed deep respect for the Sultan. Salahuddin was not only a great warrior but also a humble and just ruler . He lived a simple life  and spent most of his wealth helping the poor and needy. Even after ruling a vast empire, when he passed away in 1193 , his treasury had barely enough money for his burial. Sultan Salahuddin’s bravery, wisdom, and kindness  made him one of the most respected rulers in history. He proved that true greatness lies not only in conquering lands but in winning hearts . His name is remembered even today as a symbol of justice, mercy, and heroism . Ad Ad

  • Experience of Stormy night in a River (Story Writing / Completing Story)

Experience of Stormy night in a River             Last autumn I was at Gopalgonj. I along with two friends had to join a marriage ceremony of one of my relatives at Kotwalipara. We decided to go there by launch through a small river. The distance was more than 90 km. According to the schedule we got on the launch. It was an autumn evening. The day was bright. The current and the wind were in our favour. The sky was clear. There was no cloud. The river was calm.                    We got upon the roof of the launch and began to enjoy the sights. We saw country-boats, trawlers and launches plying to and fro. The launch was moving smoothly. We, all the passengers were in a jolly mood. We were enjoying the beautiful natural scenery on either side of the river. The rays of the setting sun fell on the river and the water looked like pearls. The river was full to the brim. The murmuring sound of the waves charmed us. There were small waves on the river. Every wave that dashed against our launch increased our thrill and joy. The weary sun was sinking under water. Meanwhile the stars made their appearance. The moon rose. Everything was visible in the silvery light of the moon. Suddenly the weather turned foul. There were deep clouds in the sky. All on a sudden a storm arose. We, all the passengers, were terribly upset. We were very much frightened as the launch was lurching aging and again. We could not think what to do and see anything clearly because of darkness. The sailor was trying hard to reach to the shore before coming heavy rain. Some women and children were crying. It made the whole situation horrible. I could not do anything without praying to God to rescue us. The launch was not very big. Again, there was no lifeboat in the launch. The storm caused the river water swell. There were heavy waves which clashed against the launch. It seemed to me that the strong weaves might cause rift in the launch. We were thinking that we might meet watery graves. So, we began to utter the name of God again and again. At last after an hour the storm stopped and we thanked the Almighty Creator. We reached to the shore one hour later where my cousin was waiting for us. He was very shocked hearing our description. I thought that I would never be able to forget that terrible storm. A Stormy Night on the River Last autumn, I was in Gopalganj with two friends. We had to attend a relative’s wedding in Kotalipara and decided to travel by launch through a small river. The journey was over 90 kilometers, but the weather was pleasant, and the river was calm. We boarded the launch as per schedule and settled in for what we expected to be a peaceful ride. As the launch moved smoothly, we climbed onto the roof to enjoy the breathtaking scenery. We saw boats, trawlers, and other launches moving along the river. The golden rays of the setting sun reflected off the water, making it shimmer like pearls. The cool breeze and the soft murmuring of the waves filled us with joy. Soon, the stars appeared, and the full moon cast a silvery glow over everything. It was a picture-perfect night—until everything changed suddenly. Out of nowhere, dark clouds covered the sky, and a strong wind started blowing. Within moments, a violent storm arose. The once peaceful river turned into a terrifying force, with massive waves crashing against our launch. The vessel lurched dangerously, making the passengers panic. Women and children screamed in fear, and we could hardly see anything in the darkness. The captain tried desperately to steer towards the shore, but the storm was too fierce. Our launch was small and had no lifeboats. The water level rose quickly, and every wave felt like it might tear the boat apart. At that moment, I truly believed we were facing our end. We held onto whatever we could, praying for safety as the storm raged on. The minutes felt like hours. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, the storm began to weaken. The waves calmed, and the wind slowed down. An overwhelming sense of relief washed over us as we realized we had survived. We reached the shore an hour later, where my cousin was waiting anxiously. When we told him about our terrifying experience, he was shocked. Even now, the memory of that night sends shivers down my spine. It was an experience I will never forget. After the departure of the guests, he said to his goose, "You've humiliated me in front of my friends. I'll not give you food today." After some days the goose fell ill. When he was dying after some days of illness, he began to sing. The man said, "What's the matter? Why are you singing now?" The goose said in grief that this happens when death comes to them. The man could not be happy at the words of the goose. He said to the goose, "If I had known that you couldn't sin other than the time of death, I would have not bought you or I should have killed you on the day I had my guests " Ad

  • Rice Seller / Tit for Tat (Story Writing / Completing Story)

Tit for Tat Once there lived a rice seller who was dishonest and used to cheat his customers by giving the buyers less quantity. One day a very clever and tough customer came to test the rice seller. The customer was as clever as the seller himself. He asked the price of rice and after a hard bargaining settled the price. "Ok. Give me one seer of rice," said the customer. "Only one seer and so much of bargain for that!", grumbled the seller. "Listen dear", said the customer, "As a matter of rule you are supposed to sell any quantity asked by any customer. And as you know bargain over the price has been a customery matter. So I don't find why you should take a mess at what I have done. "Come on, please give one seer of rice at the price we have already settled," finished the customer. The seller finding, no other excuse for brandishing words gave him one seer of rice but very tactfully weighed the amount of rice which was clearly one 'chattak' less. The customer took his rice and started walking without paying the price. At this the seller shouted at him saying, "How is that! You are making, your way without paying me. I haven't give you the rice free of cost?" "Never mind", said the customer, "I am not making good. I will just have the rice weighed again at that shop and come back to pay you," so saying the customer went to another rice seller sitting at a little distance for, had his rice weighed and found that the amount of rice was clearly one chattak less. The customer then came back and protested against the cheating habit of the seller and grumbled at his foul practice. The shrewd seller at once understood the nature of his customer. He said, "Please don't grumble my dear. I have helped in one way. I only tried to lighten your burden so that you may find it easy to carry. Please pay the price of one seer of rice." The customer had already worked out what he would do. He paid the price of rice less by a few taka. At this the seller grew angry and demanded payment in full. The customer smiled and said, "Do not grumble my dear friend, I have helped you too. I have paid you less to save your time and energy. Now you will find it easy to count. You have lessened my trouble by giving me less and so did I in return for your good gesture. Thank you very much. See you again. "Saying that the customer went away taking the bag of rice. The seller kept looking at him finding no answer to the way his customer treated him. "After all I have been paid in the same coin," uttered he and kept mum. A Mysterious Phone Call It was late at night when I was preparing for my upcoming exam. The rest of my family was sound asleep, and the silence in the house was almost overwhelming. Suddenly, my phone rang, and I saw it was an unknown number. A wave of fear washed over me. I picked up the call, feeling a mix of curiosity and anxiety. To my confusion, the caller didn’t speak but remained completely silent. I tried to engage them, asking if they could hear me, but there was no response. After a few moments of silence, I hung up, hoping it was just a mistake. But the phone rang again almost immediately. My heart began to race as I considered ignoring it, but I couldn’t resist picking up once more. This time, a voice broke the silence, speaking in a cryptic tone. The caller claimed to be a childhood friend who remembered me well, despite my inability to recall them. The vague words left me feeling uneasy, and just as quickly as the call had started, it ended abruptly, leaving me with more questions than answers. I immediately tried to call back, but the number was switched off, and I was left in the dark. The unsettling experience lingered in my thoughts, making it difficult to focus on my studies. I felt restless, the mystery of the call gnawing at me throughout the night. By morning, I tried calling again, but the result was the same—no answer. Feeling overwhelmed, I decided to confide in my close friend Rafiq. When I shared the strange incident with him, his calm reassurance helped ease my worries. He reminded me that if the caller truly knew me, they would reach out again. His words brought me some comfort, and with a renewed sense of peace, I returned to my studies, hopeful that the mystery would eventually be solved. Though his life was full of struggle, Ramesh always maintained a positive attitude. He was content with what he had and never complained about his hardships. One day, while resting in a park after a long day of work, Ramesh bought a lottery ticket from a nearby shop. It was something he did occasionally, just for fun, though he never expected to win anything. He had heard many people talking about winning the lottery, but he never thought it could happen to him. That evening, after finishing his work, he sat down to check the lottery numbers. To his utter shock and amazement, Ramesh found that he had won the first prize! The ticket he had bought was worth millions. At first, he couldn’t believe it. He rubbed his eyes, checked the numbers again, and then realized that he truly had won. Read the beginning of the following story and complete it in your own way. • Pranks are not Always Fun: It was late at night    (Story Writing)

Pranks are not Always Fun      As the night wore on, I was deeply engrossed in my studies, preparing for an upcoming examination. The house was quiet as everyone else in my family had retired for the night. Abruptly, my phone rang and displayed an unfamiliar number. I felt a sudden surge of fear, as late night phone calls often signal an emergency or other alarming events. My father was away on a business trip, and I immediately feared that something might have happened to him. Tentatively, I answered the phone and inquired as to the caller's identity. There was no response, only a deep sigh that heightened my sense of unease. I repeated my question, but still received no reply. For several agonizing minutes, the line remained silent until finally, a fit of laughter erupted from the other end, and the caller hung up. I was left bewildered and terrified by the experience, my mind so disturbed that I was unable to concentrate on my studies any longer.   The next day, after completing my exam, I encountered a friend who informed me that one of my classmates had played a prank on me the previous night. I was astounded by the revelation and confronted the prankster in search of an explanation. He confessed to being fond of pranks but claimed that no harm was intended. I implored him to refrain from such antics in the future, reminding him that we must all be mindful of our actions and refrain from causing needless distress to others. This incident taught me the importance of not engaging in activities that disrupt the peace of others' minds and reminded me that pranks are not always a source of amusement.       Moral : Pranks Are Not Always Fun One night, I was studying hard for an exam. The house was very quiet because everyone was sleeping. Suddenly, my phone rang. The number on the screen was unfamiliar. I felt scared because late-night calls are often about emergencies. My father was away on a trip, so I feared something bad had happened to him. I nervously answered the call and asked who it was. There was no reply, only a deep sigh. This made me feel even more worried. I asked again, but the caller stayed silent. After a few minutes, the silence broke with loud laughter, and the call ended. I was shocked and scared. After this, I couldn’t focus on my studies anymore. The next day, after my exam, a friend told me that one of my classmates had played a prank on me. I was surprised and upset. I went to the prankster and asked why he had done it. He said it was just for fun and that he didn’t mean any harm. I told him that his joke had made me very anxious and scared. I asked him not to do such pranks again because they can hurt others’ feelings. This event taught me an important lesson. Pranks may seem funny to the person doing them, but they can upset or harm others. We should always think about how our actions affect others. Moral: Pranks should not hurt others; think before you act.

    Who a Contented Man is   Once upon a time, in a bygone era, a nobleman of considerable standing had erected a grandiose mansion, the likes of which had not been seen in the region. Driven by an unquenchable desire to discover a man who was truly contented with his life, he had a sign affixed on the front gate with a most intriguing proclamation: “This house in to be given to the first man who can prove that he is contented.”   One fine day, a stranger made his way to the estate and politely requested an audience with the nobleman, having come to stake his claim on the property. The nobleman granted him an audience and inquired as to his purpose. The stranger responded with a declaration of his contentment, laying claim to the house. The nobleman, intrigued, asked him how he could prove his contentment.   The stranger, with a calm and collected demeanor, explained that it was his innate nature to remain content, regardless of whether or not his expectations were met. Unimpressed, the nobleman probed further, asking him to define the essence of a contented man. The stranger replied that a contented man was one who found happiness in what he already possessed, without a desire for more.   In a sudden flash of insight, the nobleman realized that the stranger’s very claim to the house was proof that he was not contented, for if he were, he would not have sought out such grandeur. With a heavy heart, the nobleman uttered a solemn truth: "If you were truly contented, you would not be here seeking to claim this house." Hearing this, the stranger felt ashamed and left the place with a broken heart.
