Questions

Part A: Reading Test (Marks—50)

Read the passage. Then answer the questions no. 1 and 2:

'Heritage' is what we inherit from the past, live with in the present and then pass on to our children or future generation. Our unique source of life and inspiration is our cultural and natural heritage. When we speak of 'World Heritage', it indicates places and sites that we inherited from the past and pass on to the future generation of the entire world.

The 'Shat Gambuj Mosque' in Bagerhat is such a heritage. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. Originally, the historic Mosque City was known as 'Khalifatabad'. It is situated at the outskirts of Bagerhat town, not very far from the dense mangrove forest of the Sundarbans. Khalifatabad was a Muslim colony. It was founded by the Turkish general, a saint warrior Ulugh Khan Jahan in the 15th century. The infrastructure of the city reveals significant technical skills in many mosques as well as early Islamic monuments. Baked bricks were used for the construction of the buildings. The planning of the city was dominated by the tradition of Islamic architecture and the decorations were a combination of Mughal and Turkish architecture.

Khan Jahan built a network of roads, bridges, public buildings and reservoirs to make the city habitable. There were about 360 mosques in the city. Among them the most remarkable is the multi-domed Shat Gombuj Mosque. The mosque is unique in the sense that it has 60 pillars that support the roof, with 77 low height domes. The 4 towers at 4 corners have smaller domes at the top as well. The vast prayer hall has 11 arched doorways on the east and 7 each on the north and south for light and ventilation. It has 7 aisles running along the length of the mosque and 11 deep curves between the slender stone columns. These columns support the curving arches created by the domes. The thickness of the arches is 6 feet and have slightly narrowing hollow and round wall. The west wall in the interior has 11 'Mihrabs' (niche in mosque pointing towards Makkah). These Mihrabs are decorated with stonework and terracotta. The floor of the mosque is made of brick.

Besides being used as a prayer hall, Khan Jahan used the mosque as his court too. Today, it is one of the greatest tourist attractions and one of the best architectural beauties of Bangladesh.

Answer to the Question No. 8

A Rainy Day

A rainy day is a day when it rains continuously all day long. The sky remains overcast with dark clouds, and the sun is not seen. On such a day, people usually have to stay indoors. Many people enjoy spending time with their family, eating special food like ‘khichuri’, and listening to music or reading books. Animals and birds take shelter in safe places to protect themselves from the rain. They remain quiet and inactive for most of the day. For children, a rainy day is often a day of joy. They get a break from school and love to float paper boats in the puddles. Some children enjoy drenching themselves in the rain. A rainy day has different impacts on the rich and the poor. For the rich, it is a day of comfort and enjoyment. But for the poor, especially day labourers, it brings misery as they cannot go out to earn their daily bread, and their homes often get flooded.

Answer to the Question No. 9

A Kind Deed

One day, Sara was going to school with her younger brother. On their way, they saw a woman sitting on the road, with a baby in her lap, and crying loudly. Sara, being a kind-hearted girl, went near the woman with her brother. She asked the woman, "What's the matter, aunty? Why are you crying?" The woman replied in a broken voice that her baby was very sick with a high fever and she had no money to buy medicine or see a doctor. Sara's heart melted with pity. She looked at her brother, who also felt very sad for the poor woman and her baby. Sara had some pocket money which she was saving to buy a new storybook. Without a second thought, she took out all the money and gave it to the woman. She said, "Aunty, please take this money and take your baby to a doctor." Her brother also gave his tiffin money to her. The woman was overwhelmed with gratitude and blessed the children with tears of joy in her eyes. Sara and her brother felt a deep sense of happiness and satisfaction in their hearts. They learned that the joy of helping others is greater than any personal pleasure.

Answer to the Question No. 10

Choice of Professions by Educated Youth in Bangladesh

The given pie chart illustrates the choice of professions by different educated youths in Bangladesh. The chart is divided into four sectors: Government Job, Private Job, Business, and Farming.

According to the chart, the most preferred profession among the educated youth is Government Job, which is chosen by 35% of them. This indicates a strong desire for job security and social prestige associated with government positions. The second most popular choice is Private Job, at 30%. This shows that a large number of youths are also attracted to the corporate sector.

Business is the third choice, with 20% of the educated youth opting for entrepreneurship. The least preferred profession among the four is Farming, which is chosen by only 15% of the educated youth. This low percentage suggests that modern agriculture has not yet become an attractive career path for the majority of educated individuals.

In summary, the chart reveals a clear trend where educated youths in Bangladesh prioritize stable jobs in government and private sectors over entrepreneurship and agriculture.

A Dialogue on the Importance of Reading Story Books

Sami: Hello Rahi, how are you? What are you doing?

Rahi: Hi Sami, I'm fine. I'm just scrolling through my phone. I'm feeling a bit bored. Sami: Why don't you read a storybook then? It's the best way to pass the time.

Rahi: Oh, I don't really like reading storybooks. I find them boring.

Sami: Boring? You are mistaken, my friend. Reading storybooks is a wonderful habit. It has so many benefits.

Rahi: Really? Like what?

Sami: Firstly, storybooks take us to a world of imagination and creativity. They introduce us to new characters, places, and ideas. This helps to broaden our minds and outlook on life.

Rahi: I see. What else?

Sami: They are a great source of entertainment and pleasure. Moreover, reading storybooks, especially in English, is one of the best ways to improve your vocabulary and language skills. You can learn new words and sentence structures in a very enjoyable way.

Rahi: That's interesting. I do want to improve my English.

Sami: Storybooks also teach us moral lessons and values. We can learn a lot about life from the experiences of the characters.

Rahi: You have really opened my eyes, Sami. I never thought about it this way. Can you suggest a good storybook for me to start with?

Sami: Of course! You can start with something simple and exciting, like "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". I have a copy. You can borrow it from me.

Rahi: Thank you so much! I will definitely give it a try.

Sami: You're welcome. I'm sure you will love it.
