Slums in Every City of Bangladesh
Slum dwellers are often forced into their precarious living conditions due to various circumstances, rendering them rootless and vulnerable. Living in slums, they endure deplorable conditions, deprived of basic human rights. Approximately 80% of slum residents suffer from hunger, malnutrition, and various diseases, leading to premature death and ongoing struggles for survival.
In addition to their harsh living conditions, slum dwellers are often exposed to a society plagued by lawlessness and violence. Many are coerced into engaging in antisocial activities such as hijacking, smuggling, theft, drug abuse, and child trafficking. Furthermore, they are exploited by so-called political leaders, who manipulate them into participating in disruptive activities like hartals, picketing, and damaging public property.
It is imperative for both the government and non-governmental welfare organizations to step forward and address the plight of slum dwellers. Rehabilitation efforts are essential to providing these individuals with a chance to escape their current circumstances and build a brighter future. By offering support and opportunities for improvement, we can empower slum residents to break free from the cycle of poverty and deprivation.
Thank you for considering the publication of this letter.
Yours faithfully,
Md. Matin
