Dialogue between Nehal and Hamim on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Science
Nehal: Well, Hamim, what do you think about the advantages of science?
Hamim: The advantages of science? There are so many, it’s hard to count them all. The world we live in today is completely different from the world of our forefathers. This transformation has all been brought about by science.
Nehal: Exactly. We see the advantages of science everywhere in our daily lives. Everything we use and need today is connected with science. From cooking machines and washing machines to refrigerators, lights, fans, radios, televisions, telephones, and mobile phones—these are all products of science. We literally cannot live without them today.
Hamim: What about our compass, calculators, computers, air conditioners, and all the office equipment we use?
Nehal: Yes, those too! They are all gifts of science.
Hamim: Exactly. In fact, science’s benefits extend to every area of life. In education, our books, journals, papers, modern audio-video systems, equipment, and apparatus—these are all the products of science. Our agricultural tools, medicines, medical equipment, newspapers, and electronic and internet media—these too are all fruits of science.
Nehal: Indeed, the benefits of science have reached every corner of the world and even beyond it.
Hamim: Yes, so far, science has contributed greatly to our comfort, longevity, and material welfare. However, it has also raised problems that were unknown and unimaginable before—problems that even the most brilliant minds struggle to solve.
Nehal: Exactly! I get chills just thinking about how something so beneficial can turn into something so destructive. Science was responsible for the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, wiping out entire cities and killing countless innocent people in the blink of an eye.
Hamim: But who is responsible for these negative consequences of science? Honestly, we cannot blame science for all these disasters. It’s the devil within mankind. Science, in itself, is neither good nor evil. It’s the way we use it that determines whether it brings good or bad.
Nehal: You’re right. Let’s hope that wise minds will emerge, and we will be able to enjoy only the positive benefits of science in the future.
