Humans can neither change the sun's radiation - Seen Comprehension - Multiple Choice & Short Question for SSC English First Paper - English for Today

Read the following passage and answer the questions below:

Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun. But they can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effect on the atmosphere. Only during the last hundred years the carbon dioxide concentration has been raised alarmingly in the atmosphere and we humans can be held responsible for this.

The main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. Since the end of the 19th century, industrial activities increased rapidly giving rise to many factories. These factories required energy, which was produced through the combustion of coal. Besides the coal, other sources of energy such as mineral oil and natural gas were also burned to heat our houses, run cars and airplanes or to produce electricity. Nowadays, about 85 million barrels of crude oil are burned daily. Every time a fossil raw material is burned, it releases carbon dioxide into the air.

Therefore, it is clear that more and more greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are being generated worldwide by humans. Moreover, we are also strengthening the greenhouse effect by deforestation, which means cutting down trees. Every year enormous  areas of forests are destroyed by people to obtain wood and to clear regions for mining and to create pasture . This loss of the forest causes dual problems. Trees that are burned up release large volume of carbon dioxide gas into the air. On the other hand, as forests absorb ( 26) a lot carbon dioxide from the air and deliver oxygen instead , we also destroy an important storehouse of carbon dioxide when we clear forests.

Seen Comprehension  (Unit-2, Lesson-3)

Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun. But they can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effect on the atmosphere. Only during the last hundred years, the carbon dioxide concentration has been raised alarmingly in the atmosphere and we humans can be held responsible for this.

The main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. Since the end of the 19th century, industrial activities increased rapidly giving rise to many factories. These factories required energy, which was produced through the combustion of coal. Besides coal, other sources of energy such as mineral oil and natural gas were also burned to heat our houses, run cars and airplanes or to produce electricity.

Every year enormous areas of forests are destroyed by people to obtain wood and to clear regions for mining and to create pasture. This loss of the forest causes dual problems. Trees that are burned up release large volumes of carbon dioxide gas into the air. On the other hand, as forests absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the air and deliver oxygen instead, we also destroy an important storehouse of carbon dioxide when we clear forests.

Answers to SSC Exam Ques. No. 2

a. The effect of burning fossil fuels is the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. b. Trees can help save our environment in two ways. They can help maintain a healthy level of carbon dioxide by absorbing a lot of this gas from the air. At the same time, they can fill our air with oxygen in exchange. c. Mills and factories began to increase at the end of the 19th century following the rapid growth of industrial activities. d. Yes, I agree. Human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels, expansion of industries, deforestation, etc. are some of the main causes behind the increase of greenhouse gases. So, it is evident that humans are greatly responsible for the greenhouse effect. e. The causes lying behind deforestation are obtaining wood, clearing regions for mining and creating pasture.

Extra

1. Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the atmosphere. Thus, trees can help us in maintaining ecological balance. 2. Changing the sun's radiation and the earth's orbit around the sun are out of humans' control. 3. Human being can control the increase of greenhouse gases by minimizing the burning of fossil fuels, stopping cutting down trees indiscriminately, and planting more trees for a congenial atmosphere. 4. The lesson I get from the passage is that we are mainly responsible for the increase of greenhouse gases. And we can control it by taking some steps like minimizing the burning of fossil fuels, stopping cutting down trees indiscriminately, and planting more trees for a congenial atmosphere. 5. Human beings do some unwise activities like burning too much fossil fuels, setting up more factories, cutting down trees indiscriminately, etc. that result in the increase of greenhouse gases. Thus, they are responsible for the increase in the greenhouse gases. 6. I think the main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels. With the increase of industrial activities, the combustion of coal has increased. Besides coal, mineral oil and natural gas are also burned for various purposes. Thus, every time a fossil raw material is burned, it releases carbon dioxide into the air. 7. Enormous areas of forests are destroyed by the people every year to obtain wood, to clear regions for mining, and to create pasture. 8. The loss of forests causes dual problems as cutting down and burning of trees produce a large amount of carbon dioxide, and at the same time, the source of absorbing carbon dioxide diminishes. 9. To control the increase of greenhouse gases, we should minimize the burning of fossil fuels, stop cutting down trees indiscriminately, and plant more trees. 10. Forests help us in various ways. They absorb carbon dioxide, generate oxygen, provide energy through burning wood, etc. 11. Yes, man can influence the climate both negatively and positively. By burning oil, coal, and trees, man can worsen the climate. However, by avoiding doing such things and planting more trees, man can improve the climate. 12. Humans can change neither the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun, because these things are beyond their control. 13. We use enormous amount of fossil fuels to run factories, to heat our houses, run cars and airplanes or to produce electricity. 14. Yes, I agree that indiscriminate cutting down of trees is taking us to destruction. Trees burned up release large volumes of carbon dioxide gas into the air. On the other hand, we also destroy an important storehouse of carbon dioxide when we clear forests. Thus, we are heading toward destruction. 15. We need coal to produce energy so that we can use it for different purposes. 16. The greenhouse effect is a process of warming of the earth's surface, caused by the increased amount of CO2. 17. Deforestation means cutting down trees. But trees absorb carbon dioxide and deliver oxygen. So, due to deforestation this process is hampered and thus greenhouse effect is strengthened. 18. Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun. But they can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effects on the atmosphere. 19. Forests absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen instead. That's why, the carbon dioxide storehouse is destroyed with the forests. 20. There are many causes of increasing greenhouse gases. Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, natural gas is the main cause. Besides, cutting down of trees is also a big reason of increasing greenhouse gases. 21. The loss of forests causes dual problems. Burning of trees produce a large amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and at the same time, the source of absorbing carbon dioxide diminishes. 22. When trees are burned up, they release large volumes of carbon dioxide into the air. 23. The industrial activities increased rapidly from the end of the 19th century. As a result, many factories were built and more fossil fuels were burned. 24. When a fossil raw material is burned, carbon dioxide is released into the air. This increases the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and causes greenhouse effect. 25. Industrial activities contribute to the greenhouse effect by burning fossil fuels to run factories, which release large quantities of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 26. The loss of forests causes a "dual problem" because burning trees releases carbon dioxide, and the destroyed forests can no longer absorb carbon dioxide from the air.
