Higher education refers to education beyond the secondary level especially education provided by a college or university. Accessibility to higher education implies that students get the opportunity to get university education and sufficient support from educational institutions. Increasing enrolment at the secondary and higher secondary level puts pressure on higher educational institutions. There are only handful universities in our country. Due to limited capacity, only a small number of students may be enrolled in universities. Thus, each year a large number of students are denied access to higher education. Also, due to poverty and increase in educational expenses, students of the lower middle class do not get easy access to higher education. Only about 12 percent of graduates enter higher educational institutions. More than 80 percent of these students are admitted to NU affiliated colleges. Others are absorbed by the public and private universities. Most universities cannot offer a wide range of subjects. Library, laboratory, Internet and research facilities are not satisfactory. Seminars, symposiums, lectures, workshops, debates, and exhibitions are hardly held in these institutions and there is not much scope for national and international exposure for promising young knowledge seekers. This problem may be impossible to solve overnight but it can be lessen gradually. The number of universities must be increased in this regard. The poor students should have the accessibility like others. Moreover, the facilities of educational sectors should be increased and upgraded. The govt. should take the responsibility steps to solve the problems. Besides, we all should be aware of this.

Higher education in Bangladesh plays a crucial role in shaping the future of students and the development of the nation. However, this sector faces several challenges that hinder its progress and effectiveness.
One of the major problems is the limited access to higher education. Public universities have a limited number of seats, making it difficult for many qualified students to secure admission. Although private universities provide alternatives, they are often too expensive for middle- and lower-income families.
Another issue is the quality of education. While some universities maintain high academic standards, many institutions lack proper infrastructure, modern facilities, and qualified teachers. Outdated curriculums and teaching methods often fail to prepare students for the demands of the job market. Additionally, research opportunities are limited due to a lack of funding and resources.
Political unrest and session jams are common problems in public universities. Strikes and conflicts delay academic schedules, causing students to lose valuable time. This disrupts the flow of education and often demotivates students.
The higher education sector also faces challenges related to unemployment among graduates. Many students, even after completing their degrees, struggle to find jobs due to a mismatch between their skills and market demands. This is often due to insufficient focus on practical and job-oriented education.
Lack of regulation in private universities is another concern. Some private institutions prioritize profit over quality, resulting in substandard education. These universities sometimes operate without proper approval or accreditation, affecting the credibility of their degrees.
Finally, there is an issue of inequality in access to higher education. Students from rural areas face more challenges due to a lack of quality colleges and universities in their regions. They also face difficulties in competing with urban students who have access to better resources.
To address these problems, the government and educational institutions need to work together to improve infrastructure, regulate private universities, modernize curriculums, and provide scholarships for underprivileged students. Without addressing these challenges, the goal of a skilled and educated workforce in Bangladesh will remain unfulfilled.
