IELTS Speaking Part-2 A time you arrived early for an appointment

Describe a time you arrived early for an appointment

You should say:

·         What it was for

·         Where it was

·         What you did while waiting

·         And explain how you felt about it

I’m pleased you’ve asked me this question because this is actually something that happened to me quite recently so I remember it clearly. I had a dentist appointment, just a check-up, and, for some reason, I thought it was at 10am. I left home at 9am to give myself plenty of time to get there in the rush-hour traffic and find a place to park. Unexpectedly, there were no hold-ups and I found a parking space close to the dentists and I was feeling very pleased with myself that I had arrived early for my appointment.

I went to the reception desk, gave my name and the receptionist looked a bit confused, looked at her watch and said ‘you’re a bit early, your appointment isn’t until 11am’. My heart sank. I had so much work to do and now I was going to lose an hour in the waiting room at the dentists. I am a person who likes to be on time and I pride myself on my timekeeping, but being an hour and 20 minutes early is ridiculous. I had a dilemma: go to work, do ten minute’s work and then come back again or sit and wait. I decided on the latter because I couldn’t face my colleagues laughing at my stupidity.

In the waiting room, there was coffee and a good Wi-Fi connection so I made myself a coffee and logged into my work email account. There were quite a few emails that I could deal with and, surprisingly, I managed to get a lot more done than I would have done if I had been at work. Luckily, the dentist was not running late and I actually got in to see her ten minutes early.

When I first realised my error, I felt stupid and annoyed with myself for getting the time of the appointment wrong, but, with hindsight, I caught up on a lot of work emails and when I got to work at around lunchtime, I felt more relaxed than normal as I had dealt with all the urgent matters. Now when I have any appointment, I double-check the time because, although it turned out ok in the end, I don’t really want to make the same mistake again.

I’m glad you asked me about this because I recently experienced something similar. I had a dentist appointment for a routine check-up, and for some reason, I thought it was scheduled for 10 a.m. I left home at 9 a.m. to avoid rush-hour traffic and to find a parking spot. To my surprise, there were no traffic issues, and I found a parking space right by the dentist's office. I was quite pleased with myself for arriving early.

However, when I went to the reception desk, the receptionist looked puzzled and said, "You’re a bit early; your appointment isn’t until 11 a.m." My heart sank. I had a lot of work to do, and now I was going to spend an hour in the waiting room. As someone who values punctuality and prides myself on timekeeping, being an hour and 20 minutes early felt excessive. I faced a dilemma: either go back to work, do a bit of work, and then return, or just wait. I chose to wait because I didn’t want to face my colleagues laughing at my mistake.

In the waiting room, I found coffee and a good Wi-Fi connection. I made myself a coffee and logged into my work email. Surprisingly, I was able to handle several emails and actually got more done than I might have if I had been at work. Fortunately, the dentist was running on time, and I even got in ten minutes earlier than my scheduled appointment.

Initially, I felt foolish and annoyed with myself for getting the appointment time wrong. However, in hindsight, I managed to catch up on work and arrived at the office around lunchtime feeling more relaxed than usual. Now, I always double-check appointment times to avoid repeating the mistake, although it turned out okay in the end.
