IELTS Speaking Part-2 A successful thing that your friend has done

Describe a successful thing that your friend has done

You should say:

·         Who your friend is

·         What the success was

·         What he or she did

·         And explain how you felt about it

I’ve decided to talk about my close friend, who passed his driving test. Now, you are probably thinking, that’s not a big deal, but for him it was a major achievement and I’ll tell you why. When I first met him, he was in his mid thirties and couldn’t drive. At that time, this was not an issue for him, as his office was within walking distance and he lives in a city with a good public transport network so being able to drive was not a priority. Several years passed though, and his mum became ill. His parents don’t live that far away, but when she was staying in hospital, it became difficult because the visiting times in the hospital made it tricky for him to get home because of the train and bus times. Due to this, he realised that his life would be easier if he could drive.

He bought a course of lessons, took his test and failed. Not one to be defeated, he took more lessons and failed again. Sadly, it was not third time lucky and he failed his third attempt. At this point, he decided to give up because it was costing an arm and a leg to try and pass his test. Six months later, his mum became ill again and he decided to give the driving test another go.

He was determined and practised every waking moment, but it was to no avail and his fourth test resulted in failure too. I really thought he would give up and never try again at that point; however, he persevered and on the fifth try, he passed. When he phoned to tell me, my first words were ‘you’re joking’. I couldn’t believe it and neither could he.

I was incredibly proud of him because it not only cost a fortune, but also it affected his self-esteem every time he was unsuccessful, but every time he picked himself up and tried again. Now, he has been driving for a few years and I am a bit embarrassed to say this, but I still have not let him drive me anywhere. I am not a good passenger so when we go out, I always drive.

Describe a Successful Thing That Your Friend Has Done

I'd like to talk about my close friend, Mark, and his remarkable achievement: passing his driving test. While it might seem like a routine milestone for many, for Mark, it represented a significant personal victory, and here's why.

When I first met Mark, he was in his mid-thirties and didn't know how to drive. At that time, living in a city with a well-connected public transport system and having his office within walking distance, driving was not a pressing need for him. However, things changed when his mother fell ill. Despite the hospital being relatively close, the inconvenient train and bus schedules made it challenging for him to visit her regularly. This situation highlighted the practicality of having a driving license.

Determined to improve his situation, Mark enrolled in a driving course. Unfortunately, his initial attempts were not successful. He failed his driving test three times, each failure becoming a setback that affected his confidence and drained his finances. Despite the mounting costs and emotional strain, Mark’s resolve didn't waver. Six months after his third attempt, his mother's health declined again, prompting him to try the driving test once more.

Mark's perseverance was commendable. He devoted every spare moment to practicing, but his fourth attempt ended in failure. Many would have given up, but Mark's determination was unwavering. On his fifth attempt, he finally passed the driving test. When he called me to share the news, my immediate reaction was, "You're joking." It was hard to believe, but the joy and relief in his voice were palpable.

I felt an immense sense of pride for Mark. His journey was a testament to his resilience and dedication. Despite the financial strain and emotional toll, he kept pushing forward and eventually succeeded. It's a story of triumph over adversity, and I admire his ability to persist despite repeated failures. Even though Mark has been driving for a few years now, I must admit, I still haven't let him drive me anywhere—I'm not the best passenger and prefer to drive myself.
