Describe a subject that you used to dislike but are now interested in
You should say:
· What the subject is
· Why you disliked it
· Why you are interested in it now
· And explain how you became interested in it
To be perfectly honest, I could probably talk about any subject that I used to study at school because I didn’t really like any of them when I was studying them in school. It wasn’t the teachers’ fault, I suppose it was because when you are at school, being stuck in a classroom is nobody’s idea of fun. Anyway, I have decided to talk about history because it was probably the one I was least interested in during my school years. In my school, we could drop subjects in Year 9 and I actually dropped it because I wasn’t in the slightest bit interested in it.
The major reason for my lack of interest was ignorance. What I mean by that is that I was young and not very worldly so when the teacher was talking about different countries and the things that had happened, I found it incredibly difficult to comprehend because I had no understanding or knowledge of these countries. For example, when they would talk about the Korean war or the Vietnam war, I had no idea where these places were and so I couldn’t relate to anything the teacher was going on about.
As I have matured, I have developed a wider range of interests and, thanks to globalisation, the world is much more connected than it was previously so I have a greater awareness of other countries and their past struggles. Travelling to various countries has also sparked an interest in history, as when I visit foreign climes, I often visit museums and historical buildings so this has further stimulated my interest in world history.
I guess that as I get older, this interest is going to intensify even more. I have even started watching documentaries on TV about historical events – something which I would never have done a decade ago. I feel there are huge gaps in my knowledge and I still have an awful lot to learn, but now it is a hobby rather than a compulsory school subject, I am enjoying acquiring this new knowledge.

To be perfectly honest, reflecting on my school years, it’s clear that most subjects felt like a chore back then. However, if I had to pick one subject that I initially disliked but have grown to appreciate, it would be history. During my school years, history was the subject I found the least appealing. We had the option to drop subjects in Year 9, and I eagerly chose to drop history because I found it utterly uninspiring.
My main issue with history was ignorance. At that age, I lacked the maturity and perspective to grasp the significance of historical events. For instance, discussions about the Korean War or the Vietnam War seemed remote and abstract to me because I had little understanding of these places or their historical contexts. Without a personal connection or broader knowledge, history felt irrelevant and dry.
As I’ve grown older, my perspective has shifted significantly. The process of globalisation has made the world feel much smaller and more interconnected, which has naturally piqued my curiosity about different cultures and their histories. Additionally, my travels to various countries have played a crucial role in sparking my interest in history. Exploring museums and historical landmarks has offered me a tangible connection to the past and deepened my understanding of global events.
Now, history has become a fascinating subject for me. I’ve started watching historical documentaries and reading books on various historical topics—something I would never have done a decade ago. I find myself eager to fill the gaps in my knowledge and explore historical narratives that were once opaque to me. What was once a compulsory subject has now transformed into a genuine passion. I appreciate history not just as an academic pursuit but as a window into the diverse and complex tapestry of human experience.
