IELTS Speaking Part-2 A historical building you have visited

Describe a historical building you have visited

You should say:

·         Where it is

·         What it looks like

·         What it is used for now/what you learned there

·         And explain how you felt about this building

To be perfectly honest, I haven’t visited many historical buildings, mainly because I haven’t had the opportunity, but there was one I went to when I was visiting London and I found it fascinating.

Prior to this visit, one of the things on my bucket list was to visit Buckingham Palace. I’m not a big fan of the monarchy/royal family, but it is a stunningly beautiful building and I am fascinated by architecture so during a trip to London last year, I made a point of visiting it. It is only open to the public for a few days in August and I was lucky enough to be in London at that time. Because of the limited opening times, it was essential to pre-book so I did this a few months in advance.

During the visit, we were given a tour of the state rooms, which are used when the Queen is entertaining guests. Obviously, you can’t go into her private quarters, but it is still fascinating and the rooms are breath-taking. We had a guide showing us around and she told us some historical facts about the building and interesting info such as there are 775 rooms inside the palace.

After the tour, we were famished so went to the café and had a traditional English scone with jam and cream. Shortly after, as I was browsing in the gift shop, I spotted a tea cup and I decided to buy it as a souvenir of my visit. It is bone China and a beautiful pale pink colour. I use it every morning for my tea and it is special because it reminds me of my visit to that extraordinary house. It truly is an outstanding building. The grand staircase is spectacular and that was the highlight of the visit for me.

Describe a Historical Building You Have Visited

One historical building that I found particularly fascinating is Buckingham Palace in London. Although I haven’t had the chance to visit many historical buildings, this one was a standout experience.

Buckingham Palace, located in the heart of London, is a stunningly beautiful and iconic building. It is renowned for its classical architecture, with its grand façade and impressive, ornate details. The palace is characterized by its elegant symmetry and its large, gilded gates, which are often associated with the British monarchy.

During my visit, which took place last year, I was fortunate enough to experience the palace when it was open to the public for a few days in August. As it is only accessible to the public during this limited time, I had to book my tickets several months in advance. The visit included a tour of the state rooms, which are used for official functions and royal receptions. Although the private quarters of the Queen were off-limits, the state rooms were breathtakingly beautiful. The opulence of the interiors, with their lavish decorations and historical furnishings, left a lasting impression on me.

Our guide provided us with intriguing historical facts about the palace, including the fact that it contains 775 rooms. This information highlighted the sheer scale of the building and its historical significance.

After the tour, we were quite hungry, so we headed to the café and enjoyed a traditional English scone with jam and cream, which was a delightful experience. While browsing the gift shop, I purchased a pale pink bone china teacup as a memento of my visit. I use this teacup every morning, and it serves as a special reminder of that extraordinary place.

The grand staircase, with its magnificent design, was the highlight of the visit for me. Overall, Buckingham Palace is not only a remarkable architectural masterpiece but also a symbol of British history and culture. My visit to this outstanding building was a memorable experience, and I felt truly privileged to have had the opportunity to explore it.
