IELTS Speaking Part-2 A Gift You Recently Gave to Someone

Describe a gift you recently gave to someone.

You should say:

  • who you gave it to

  • what kind of person he/she is

  • what the gift was

  • what occasion the gift was for

  • and explain why you chose that gift.

Well, recently I had the pleasure of giving a gift to my best friend, Lisa. She's an amazing person, always full of energy and enthusiasm. The gift I gave her was a custom-made photo album filled with pictures capturing our memorable moments together. I chose this particular gift because Lisa is someone who values the bond of friendship, and I thought it would be a heartfelt way to reminisce about our shared experiences.

The occasion for this gift was Lisa's birthday, which was just around the corner. I wanted to make her day extra special by giving her something that reflected the beautiful journey of our friendship. Birthdays are moments of celebration, and I believe that a thoughtful and personal gift adds a special touch to the festivities.

The photo album included pictures from our school days, college adventures, and recent trips we had taken together. I took the time to arrange the photos chronologically, making it a nostalgic journey for her. The joy on her face when she flipped through the pages was priceless, and it made the effort I put into selecting and arranging the pictures worthwhile.

I chose this gift not only because it was personal but also because it symbolized the enduring nature of our friendship. Memories are precious, and I wanted to give Lisa a tangible reminder of the incredible moments we've shared. It's a simple yet meaningful gesture that I believe captures the essence of our friendship, and seeing her smile and express gratitude was the best part of the entire experience.

Model Answer:

Well, just a couple of weeks ago, I gave a gift to my younger sister, Emily. She's an enthusiastic and creative person, always into art and crafts. The gift I gave her was a set of high-quality watercolor paints. It was her birthday, and I knew she had been eyeing those paints for a while.

Now, Emily is the kind of person who finds joy in expressing herself through art. She's an avid painter and often talks about how therapeutic it is for her. So, I thought the watercolor paints would be perfect for her artistic endeavors. I knew the occasion was special, and the gift would truly resonate with her passion for painting.

Choosing the watercolor paints was a no-brainer for me. I remembered her mentioning them during a casual conversation, and I thought it would be a thoughtful and practical gift. I wanted her to have something that not only brought her joy but also added to her artistic pursuits. Plus, it was a way for me to encourage her creativity on her special day.

In essence, I chose the gift because I wanted to give her something meaningful and aligned with her interests. The joy on her face when she unwrapped the paints and realized what they were confirmed that I made the right choice. It was more than just a present; it was a way to celebrate her uniqueness and passion.
