IELTS Speaking Part-2 A difficult decision that you made

Describe a difficult decision that you made

You should say

  • what decision it was

  • what difficulties you faced

  • how you made the decision

  • and explain why it was a difficult decision

Well, I'd like to share with you a tough decision I had to make a couple of years ago. It was about changing my career path. You know, I was at a crossroads in my professional life, and I had to decide whether to stick with my current job or take a leap into something entirely new.

The main difficulty I faced was the fear of the unknown. Leaving a secure job for an uncertain future was pretty nerve-wracking. I was concerned about financial stability and whether I would enjoy the new field as much as my current one. It was like standing on the edge of a cliff, not knowing what lay ahead.

To make this decision, I talked to a lot of people who had gone through similar career changes. I weighed the pros and cons, considering not only the immediate challenges but also the long-term benefits. Additionally, I took some career assessments to better understand my skills and interests. It was a meticulous process, and I tried my best to gather as much information as possible.

Now, you see, the reason why it was a difficult decision is that it involved a significant shift in my life. I was comfortable in my current job, but I felt stagnant and unfulfilled. Taking a leap into the unknown required courage, and the fear of failure was daunting. However, looking back, I can say it was the right decision. I found a new passion, met amazing people in the new field, and overall, I feel much more satisfied with my professional life.

In a nutshell, deciding to change my career was a challenging process filled with uncertainties, but it ultimately led to personal and professional growth. It taught me that sometimes, to progress, you need to step out of your comfort zone and embrace the challenges that come your way.

Model Answer:

Question 1: What decision it was

A few years back, I found myself in a tough spot when I had to decide whether to accept a job offer in a different city or stay in my hometown. It wasn't just a simple career choice, but a decision that could potentially impact my entire life.

Question 2: What difficulties you faced

The difficulties I faced were manifold. Firstly, the new job offered a higher salary and better career prospects, but it meant leaving behind my family and friends. Secondly, I had to consider the cost of living in the new city, which was significantly higher than my hometown. Additionally, I was apprehensive about adapting to a new work environment and building a social circle from scratch.

Question 3: How you made the decision

Making the decision was no walk in the park. I began by creating a detailed list of pros and cons, weighing the benefits of career growth against the emotional ties I had with my hometown. Consulting with close friends and family played a crucial role too. Their insights helped me see the bigger picture and consider aspects I might have overlooked. Finally, I decided to take a leap of faith, trusting that the professional opportunities would outweigh the challenges.

Question 4: Explain why it was a difficult decision

The decision was challenging because it required balancing personal and professional aspects of my life. On one hand, the allure of a better job and financial stability was enticing, but on the other hand, the emotional attachment to my hometown made the prospect of moving daunting. It was not just about choosing a career path but also about choosing a lifestyle and community. The fear of the unknown and the possibility of regret made the decision-making process emotionally draining. In the end, I realized that the difficulty of the decision stemmed from the need to strike a harmonious balance between my professional ambitions and personal connections.
