Etiquette and Manners
We have two-terms to describe our social behavior- ‘etiquette’ and ‘manners’. ‘Etiquette’ is a French word and it means the rules of correct behavior in society. The word ‘manners’ means the behavior that is considered to be polite in a particular society or culture. Manners can be good or bad. For example, it is a bad manner to speak with food in one’s mouth. No one likes a bad-mannered person. Remember that etiquette and manners vary from culture to culture and from society to society. We learn etiquette and manners from our parents, families and various institutions, such as schools, colleges or professional bodies. There are rules of behavior for all kinds of social occasions and it is important to learn them ad practice them in everyday life. The manners that are correct in a wedding reception will not do in a debating club. Therefore, we have to be careful about etiquette and manners. We know how important it is to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ in everyday life. A few more polite expressions such as ‘pardon me’, ‘excuse me’, ‘may I’ are bound to make your day smooth and pleasant. As a child you must have been told to greet your elders and visitors to your home according to your culture and tradition. You must also have been taught to be polite in company and keep quiet while others, especially your elders spoke. Possibly, you at times grudged such schooling. Possibly, at times you even protested such disciplining. Now, certainly you know that you can’t always behave the way you want especially in the presence of others. There are rules of behavior you have to follow in a company. We are social beings and have to consider the effect of our behavior on others, even if we are at home and dealing with our family members.

Etiquette and Manners
Etiquette and manners are important social rules that guide how we behave in different situations. They help us interact with others in a respectful and polite way. Good etiquette shows that we care about other people's feelings and respect their space. It involves behaving in a way that makes others feel comfortable and valued. Manners, on the other hand, are the specific ways we act or speak in social settings, such as saying "please" and "thank you" or waiting our turn to speak.
In everyday life, good etiquette and manners help create positive relationships between people. When we greet someone with a smile and say "hello," it makes the other person feel acknowledged. Simple acts of politeness, such as holding the door for someone or offering a seat to an elderly person, can go a long way in showing kindness and respect. These small gestures help build a harmonious society where people treat each other with consideration.
One of the most important aspects of good manners is listening when someone else is speaking. It shows that we value their words and opinions. Interrupting others, on the other hand, can be seen as rude and disrespectful. Similarly, speaking politely without using harsh words or offensive language is another sign of good manners. Being mindful of our tone and body language also helps convey respect during conversations.
Etiquette and manners are not just about following rules; they also reflect the values we hold as individuals. Treating others with courtesy, kindness, and understanding is a way to show that we care about their well-being. These qualities are essential in both personal and professional settings. In workplaces, for instance, showing respect for colleagues and superiors through good etiquette can help foster cooperation and a positive working environment.
In conclusion, etiquette and manners are key to maintaining good relationships with others and ensuring peaceful interactions. They make social exchanges more pleasant and help us build trust and respect. Whether at home, school, or work, practicing good manners shows that we are considerate of others, which is essential for a thriving and respectful community.
