An Idle Farmer

Once there was a farmer in a village. He was very idle. He had a few plots of land. But he did not plough them well. He did not sow seeds in time. So he could not raise good crops. As a result, he was always in want of food.

The farmer had a kitchen garden near his house. One day he saw that the fencing round the garden was broken by a herd of goats. The goats not only broke the fence but also damaged some crops of the garden. The farmer wanted to repair the fence through which the goats entered the garden. So next day, the farmer got ready to repair the fence of his garden. When he was working in the garden, he needed some sorts of help. So he called his wife who was working in the kitchen. Their little son was, at that time, in the kitchen. At the call of the farmer, his wife came to the garden leaving their little child in the kitchen. Their child was a mischief maker. So when he found himself alone in the kitchen, he used this opportunity and began to search everything without any fear. At one stage, he got hold of the hot dish in which something was being cooked. As soon as he touched the burning dish, he gave a loud shriek. The farmer and his wife hurriedly came to the kitchen and found their little son seriously injured. The farmer took him to a doctor and realised that they should never leave their son alone.

The farmer’s wife was cooking inside the kitchen. She came out and ran into the garden to drive away the goats. A dog was waiting outside the kitchen. When the farmer’s wife went out, the dog entered the kitchen and spoiled some of the food cooked by her.

Days went by, and still, the farmer did not get around to fixing the broken fence. He continued with his idle ways, ignoring the problem. One afternoon, while sitting idly in front of his house, the farmer noticed something alarming: a group of goats had entered his kitchen garden through the broken fence. They were eating his vegetables, causing damage to his plants.

The farmer quickly called out to his wife, who was inside the house, to come and drive the goats away from the garden. She rushed out of the house and ran towards the garden, trying to shoo the goats away.

While the farmer's wife was busy in the garden, a mischievous dog, who had been waiting outside the kitchen, saw an opportunity. The dog snuck into the house while the farmer's wife was distracted. It went straight to the kitchen and began to spoil the food that had been freshly cooked.

The farmer, noticing the damage caused by both the goats and the dog, realized too late that if he had fixed the fence when he first saw it broken, none of this would have happened. The damage could have been avoided if only he had acted promptly.

This story teaches us the importance of taking care of small problems when they arise. A stitch in time saves nine—meaning that dealing with a problem right away can prevent much bigger issues later on. Had the farmer repaired the fence at the first sign of damage, he would have avoided the trouble of the goats and the dog ruining his food.

ছাগল এবং কুকুর উভয়ের কারণে যে ক্ষতি হয়েছে তা লক্ষ্য করে কৃষক বুঝতে পেরেছিলেন যে, তিনি যদি প্রথমবার বেড়া ভাঙতে দেখেন, তাহলে এর কিছুই ঘটত না। যদি তিনি দ্রুত পদক্ষেপ নিতেন তবে ক্ষতি এড়ানো যেত।

এই গল্পটি আমাদের শেখায় যে ছোট ছোট সমস্যা দেখা দিলে যত্ন নেওয়ার গুরুত্ব কী। সময়মতো একটি সেলাই নয়টি বাঁচায় - অর্থাৎ সমস্যাটি তাৎক্ষণিকভাবে মোকাবেলা করলে পরবর্তীতে অনেক বড় সমস্যা এড়ানো যায়। ক্ষতির প্রথম লক্ষণেই কৃষক যদি বেড়া মেরামত করতেন, তাহলে তিনি ছাগল এবং কুকুরের খাবার নষ্ট করার ঝামেলা এড়াতে পারতেন।
