In the reading room, there are many long tables with chairs and a little placard with the word ‘SILENCE’ written on it, for a library is a place of peace and quiet. On a table there are magazines of all kinds, in English and Bengali. There are newspapers as well. When a student wants to borrow a book from the library, he chooses the book and takes it to the librarian. The librarian stamps it and notes the name of the child, the book and the date on which it is taken. The librarian is a trained and qualified person. On one side of the library hall there are long tables and benches. Students sit, read and take down notes there. The calm and quiet atmosphere of the library helps the students to work attentively. The school librarian, a trained and qualified person, gives advice to students on the choice of books. Students find no difficulty in the selection of the books. Our college has a big library with various types of books and other facilities. It is a good library with the modem facilities like computer, photocopy and air-conditioned reading rooms. It is a separate building in our college campus but connected with other buildings. It is near our classrooms and we can easily go there during leisure period. Our library is very rich with about fifty thousand books on different subjects. Apart from textbooks there is a huge collection of story books, magazines and newspapers. From the Latin word ‘libre’ which means a book, the word ‘library’ is derived. Basically, it is a room or building containing a collection of books for reading. It really helps people to form the habit of reading and inspires their thirst.
Generally there are three kinds of libraries personal, public and institutional. A school library is an institutional library. In our school we have a big library. The situation of it is on the upstair of the school building. It is a spacious room. There are a number of Almirahs containing books on literature, history, geography, science, religion etc. Right this moment it has as many as eight thousand books on various subjects.
A well-decorated reading room is also attached to it. Every student comes here to pass their leisure hours by reading books, magazines etc. according to their choice. A librarian and an assistant are appointed to help the teachers and the students. The librarian is trained and efficient and at the same time a very good man. He always encourages us to read books and acquire knowledge. Some take books from the library for use at home. By the librarian the books on different subjects that the teachers and the students need are kept and arranged systematically.

A library is a part and parcel of every educational institution. Generally, it is a collection of books. It contains books of various kinds like poetical works, novels, biographies, thrillers, travels, histories and so on. A college library caters to the needs of its students and teachers. We also have a library at our college.
Our college library is not very large. But it is good enough to serve the demands of its students and teachers. It is housed in the 2nd floor of the Arts Building. It maintains about fifteen thousand titles covering the disciplines of arts, science and commerce. It also has books for pleasure and recreation, books of reference, journals and encyclopedia. These are procured in order to keep the students and the teachers abreast of the latest research findings in different fields of knowledge. The books are kept in steel racks and are well -taken care of.
Every student and teacher is given a library card, and for that purpose lie has to deposit an amount of caution money. Books of choice of the students and teachers are issued to them against their library card for only one week. Its necessity: A school imparts education through text-books mainly. Students go through their text-books, prepare their lessons and learn what they can. But only going through the text-books narrow down their knowledge. The classrooms get dull. Besides, taste differ, capacities differ. So students need a library more than their textbooks. They need a place wherein they can read freely.
Our school library: We have the opportunity to enjoy a library in our school. Our school library is a house in our school where books are kept for use. It is a property of our school. Knowledge of philosophers, poets, literature and of past thinkers are stored in our school library in the form of books. It is not open to outsiders. Only the students and the teachers of the institution concerned have access to this library. But they cannot take books out of library without the permission of the librarian. Our library gradually develops as plants usually do. New books are regularly added to this library every year.
Duty of the librarian: There is a librarian in our school library. He has mainly two duties. He distributes books among us according to our taste. He has to help us in the choice of books. For this reason he must have had a sharp idea about every kind of book. He has to caution us so that we may take care of the books, not to damage them when we borrow books and take them outside the library. Sometimes, he has to fine us when we lose the book.
Usefulness: Our school library serves a very useful purpose. It provides for free reading according to our taste and choice. It is useful to students and teachers alike. It helps the students in many ways. To understand a text-books fully we may sometimes need other books. Then our school library comes to our help. It provides what text-books fail to do. Classroom lessons just place us on the way. Our school library enables us to follow our path freely and joyfully. When we have to write an article for the school magazine, we have to go through out-books. When we have to discuss a subject in a debate, we must consult out-books. It is our school library which can give us such an opportunity. It also helps our teachers to prepare themselves to teach their respective subjects. It helps our teachers teaching various subjects and even more. So, our school library takes us and our teachers far beyond the text-books and widens our vision.
