A  JOURNEY  BY  BOAT

Traveling by boat is a ubiquitous experience in Bangladesh, where waterways serve as the principal highways of traffic and communication. On a morning not too long ago, my intimate friend Rubel summoned me to join him on a boat excursion to his village, and I assented with eagerness. Accompanied by Shimul, Bahauddin, and Jimi, we embarked on our journey, gliding along the tranquil stream with remarkable swiftness, thanks to the favorable wind and current.

As we left behind the hustle and bustle of the town, the verdant banks, adorned with clusters of trees, captivated our gaze. The distant paddy fields and jute fields, adorned in their green garb, unfolded before our eyes. The thatched cottages of the villagers, interspersed with trees, offered an enchanting view. An old man was basking in the sun, while village boys frolicked in the vicinity, and coy village women drew water from a nearby place. Various species of birds flew overhead, and the bucolic atmosphere held us spellbound.

After an hour and a half, our boat arrived at a marketplace where we disembarked and purchased rice, eggs, a large Hilsa fish, and an assortment of sweetmeats. Our desire to relish the boat journey to the fullest impelled us to prepare our meals. The boatmen supplied us with ovens, and we collected fuel from the surroundings. Though the boatmen offered to cook for us, we declined, preferring to prepare the food ourselves. We boiled the rice, made omelets, and cooked fish curry. The invigorating river breeze, combined with the lively marketplace, and the nearby village stimulated our appetite, and we savored our meal with great gusto.

Around two o'clock in the afternoon, we resumed our boat journey, with the boatmen attempting to reach our destination before sundown. Despite their efforts, we were treated to a breathtaking sight of the golden sunset, painting the serene water of the river with hues of amber and gold. The shades of evening slowly enveloped the earth, and the stars appeared one by one in the sky. Through the groves of trees, we caught a glimpse of the faint light from the lamps villagers had lit, while a stray jackal's cry was soon answered by a chorus of his kind, signaling the arrival of the night.

Our boat crept forward until we finally arrived at our destination, touching down at the ghat of Rubel's house, shrouded in darkness. We walked to his residence, situated just a stone's throw from the riverside, marking the end of a delightful boat journey.

A JOURNEY BY BOAT

Pent up in a noisy and crowded city, anyone jumps at the suggestion of some of my friends contemplating for a journey by boat. Bangladesh is a land of rivers. So, it is an easy task to arrange a boat journey. Moreover, it is always interesting and enjoyable experience. On several occasions, I took boat journeys but the one that I had last seemed to me most thrilling.

It was Autumn Vacation. I and some of my friends planned to make a journey by boat. Accordingly, we started on the appointed day for the destination which is ten miles away from our village and situated on the bank of the river, Meghna. We hired a large boat with a boatman. The boatman was middle-aged person. The boat was well built with a bamboo-made roof and a sail on it. There were two oars on either side of the stern. We had with us some foodstuff, tea, biscuits and some fruits for our breakfast. We did have rice, raw meat, dal, spices etc for our meal. One of my friends had a camera and another brought a transistor set. After making all necessary preparations, we started the journey early in the morning.

At 8:30 a. m. we boarded the boat and the boat was pushed off the shore immediately afterwards. The current and the wind were favourable, and our boat drifted on of itself. The sky was clear. The river was calm. The boat was moving on slowly and smoothly. The small waves were beating gently against it. At the beginning of our journey, while we left the town behind, the green banks with trees and paddy fields charmed our eyes. We were, in fact, very delighted to see the beautiful scenery on either side of the river. We had our breakfast with us. We brought it out and ate it. We offered some to the boatmen. He had it by turn so as not to stop the boat. We feasted our eyes on the lovely sights on the bank of the river. The near-by and far-off villages, trees, green fields and dwelling houses looked so charming that we could not help taking some snap-shots with the camera. As we passed by, we were moved to see the people bathing and swimming in the river. At some of the ghats we saw the village women washing utensils or clothes, and the children were playing about shouting to one another.

Few women came with their earthen jars to fetch water. We found cattle grazing on the meadows by the riverside. Many boats both large and small loaded with goods, were sailing up and down. After four hours rowing, we reached our destination. Then we got down from the boat and walked for sometime. We found out a beautiful spot and there we halted. After having a little tiffin, we began cooking our meal. While the food was being cooked, we listened to the music played in the cassette player. Then we had our lunch. The food was rightly cooked. It was delicious. After that we had a gossip amongst ourselves. All this time, we were accompanied by the steersman. Then we again resumed the journey. In the afternoon, my heart was filled with joy to see the setting sun reflected on the river. I recited a few poems. When I stopped, the boatman started humming a tune. We asked him to sing a song and he did so. His voice was sweet. Then one of our friends sang eight songs at a stretch. We enjoyed them all.

We spent a happy time. After a lapse of several hours we again got into the boat and started our return journey. Our return journey was equally pleasant. On our return journey, we enjoyed a charming sight of sunset. In the landscape beside, it was glorious. The horizon was yellow-red, and it seemed that the heavens above were reflected in the water below. Gradually the earth was getting darker and darker. Soon the moon appeared in the eastern sky with all her glory. Under the influence of her silvery rays, everything around us looked simply charming. At last we came back when it was about 8 p. m. When we reached home, we were happy but we were sorry because such an interesting journey came to an end.

We enjoyed the journey to our entire satisfaction. A journey by boat in a fair weather is really pleasant and refreshing. It provides us a lot of thrill and pleasure that cannot be described but to be felt only. It purifies our mind, offers an invaluable joy in our melancholy mind. The journey which I undertook will never efface from memory. Really, this journey by boat will supply us serene delight for all time to come.

A Journey By Boat

Bangladesh is a riverine country. These rivers give us ample opportunity for a journey by boat. In some respects, journey by boat is more pleasant than a train journey. Whenever I get a chance, I avail of it and enjoy a journey by boat.

During the last autumn vacation, I went by boat to the village home of a friend. My friend's house is situated on the bank of the river Karnafully named Charandwip.

We were five in number. We took a guitar and a Yashica Camera. We took some light food too. We hired a boat with one manjhee and two oarsmen. Taking breakfast, we started 8 a.m. It was a fine morning. A gentle breeze was blowing. The river was calm. There were ripples in the river. When we were in middle of the river, we saw many beautiful sights on both sides of the river. We took the snaps of corn fields. We saw many boats and steamers plying to and fro on the river. We saw many ships Sometimes we met trawlers. There were fishermen's boats with nets spread in water.

The river was full to the brim. The murmuring sound of the river charmed us. We saw some bathing ghats. Men and women were bathing and children were swimming and splashing in the water. In the mean time, one of my friends played on his guitar. Birds of various kinds were flying then. All these sights created a profound impression on our minds.

The manjhee began to sing a 'Bhatiali song.' The sun was setting. It was evening. But the river became loveliest in the evening when the waves danced and sparkled under the crimson rays of setting sun. We recalled the poetic line of keats-

"The day so soon has glided by,Even like the passage of an angel's tear"

At 7 p.m. we reached the ghat. My friend came to the ghat to receive us. At about 8 o'clock we reached his house.

Indoed, the journey by boat is pleasant and thrilling. Such journey ritfreshes our mind and provides us joy and pleasure. It removes our monotony and widens our knowledge. However, our journey by boot came to a happy end. It will be always memorable to me.
