The Scholar and the Simple Boatman

Once upon a time, a very educated man went for a ride on a river boat. He was very proud of all the books he had read. As the boat moved slowly on the water, he decided to test the poor boatman. The man asked, "Hey boatman, can you tell me why the sun rises in the east? Do you know why the moon gets big and small, or why the tides come?" The old boatman looked confused and gave a shy smile because he did not know the answers. The educated man laughed at him and said, "You work hard, but you know nothing about science. It seems that twenty-five percent of your life is totally wasted."

After a short time, the man looked at the river water and asked some new questions. He said, "Think and tell me, do you know how the water flows down from the hills? Do you know why the water in the sea is so salty?" The poor boatman scratched his head and replied softly, "Sir, I am just a simple man. I do not know these things." The man shook his head in disappointment and scolded him, saying, "You are an old man now, and you still don't know this? I am sad to say that fifty percent of your life has been a complete waste."

The man did not stop there and decided to ask a third time. He pointed up to the sky and said, "Tell me, old man, why does the sky look so blue? Do you know why the sun and moon sometimes hide during an eclipse?" The boatman felt very sad and said, "Sir, please do not make me feel small. I cannot answer these hard questions." The man looked at him with pity and said, "What can I say? Since you have no education, I can see that seventy-five percent of your life is of no use at all."

Suddenly, a dark storm appeared, and strong winds began to blow very fast. The waves became huge, and the small boat started to shake wildly. It looked like the boat was going to sink. The educated man was very scared and shouted, "Oh boatman! Is the boat sinking? Are we going to die today?" The boatman looked at him calmly and asked, "Sir, do you know how to swim?" The man shook his head in fear and cried, "No, I never learned how to swim!" The boatman then smiled and said, "Sir, if you cannot swim, then I am afraid that one hundred percent of your life is now going to be wasted!"

Moral: Practical skills are often more important than book knowledge.

The Scholar and the Boatman

Once upon a time, in the beautiful land of Bengal, there was a very learned scholar who lived in a big city. He was a man who had read many books and knew a lot about science, history, and the stars. One day, he needed to return to his ancestral village. In those days, there were no buses or trains that went all the way to the village, so boats were the main way to travel across the many rivers of Bengal.

The scholar hired a small boat to cross a wide river. The day was sunny and calm. As the boat moved gently over the water, the scholar sat comfortably. He looked at the poor boatman who was rowing the boat with hard work. The scholar felt very proud of his own education and intelligence. He decided to show off his knowledge to the simple man.

The scholar looked at the sky and asked, "Hey boatman, have you studied the stars? Do you know anything about Astronomy or how the planets move?"

The boatman stopped rowing for a second and replied with folded hands, "No, sir. I am a poor, uneducated man. I do not know how to read or write. I only know how to row this boat."

The scholar smirked and said rudely, "Oh, what a pity! If you don't know about the stars, then 25 percent of your life is wasted!"

The boat continued to move. A little while later, the scholar looked at the water and the land. He asked another question. "Boatman, do you know Geology? Can you explain the history of the earth and the science of the soil?"

The boatman bowed his head sadly and said, "Sir, I do not know any of these big things. I spend my life serving travelers like you by ferrying them across the river."

The scholar laughed loudly and said, "You are a foolish man. If you don't know science, then 50 percent of your life is wasted!"

The scholar was preparing to ask more difficult questions to make the boatman feel small. But suddenly, the weather changed. The sky, which was blue a moment ago, turned dark with black clouds. The wind began to blow very fast, and thunder cracked across the sky. A fierce storm had started.

The river became very dangerous. Huge waves started to hit the small boat. The boat rocked violently from side to side, and water began to fill the boat. The scholar was now trembling with fear. He held onto the sides of the boat tightly.

The boatman saw that the boat was going to sink. He looked at the scholar and shouted over the noise of the wind, "Sir! The boat is sinking! Do you know how to swim?"

The scholar’s face went pale with terror. He cried out, "No! I spent my life reading books! I never learned how to swim!"

The boatman looked at him with pity and said, "Then, sir, I am very afraid. You said I wasted half my life, but today, you have lost 100 percent of your life!"

Saying this, the boatman jumped into the raging river. He was a strong swimmer, and he used his skill to swim safely to the shore. But the scholar, despite all his knowledge of the stars and the earth, did not know how to survive. He could not save himself and sadly perished in the river.

Moral: Bookish knowledge is useless without practical skills.

The Scholar and a Boatman

Once upon a time in a village, there lived a destitute and uneducated boatman who had to row his boat from dawn to dusk just to make ends meet. It was during the month of Baishakh when one day, a scholar boarded his boat. The scholar inquired if the boatman had read history, to which the boatman replied negatively. The scholar remarked that without any knowledge of history, one-fourth of the boatman’s life had been wasted. He then admired the picturesque scenery and asked the boatman if he had any acquaintance with geography. The boatman’s answer was again in the negative, leading the scholar to declare that half of the boatman’s life had been lost. The boatman felt sad and thought about the futility of his existence. After a while of silence, in the afternoon, the scholar asked if the boatman had any knowledge of science. The boatman’s answer remained negative, and the scholar retorted that three-fourths of the boatman’s life were now ruined. The boatman rowed the boat in a despondent mood, with the scholar quietly sitting by his side.

Suddenly, the sky darkened with ominous clouds, and a violent gust of wind started to blow. Darkness engulfed the surroundings, and heavy rain accompanied by lightning struck the boat. The scholar became exceedingly frightened. However, the boatman remained composed since he was accustomed to such weather. In a calm voice, the boatman asked the scholar if he could swim. The scholar replied with a pitiful tone in the negative. The boatman then announced that the boat was about to sink, and he could see that the scholar’s erudition was of no use in this moment of peril.

One day a scholar was going to a place by boat. The boatman set sail for the journey. The boat was surfing through a mighty river. The boat was going slowly. There happened no problems. The weather was fine. At one moment of their conversation, the scholar asked the boatman, "Do you know history?" The boatman simply answered, "No". The scholar said that one third of his life was spoilt. He asked again whether he had read geography. The boatman again replied "No". The scholar scolded him saying that one-eighth of his life was spoilt. A few minutes later, the sky became covered with black clouds. But suddenly, the river grew furious. It became rough. Stormy wind began to blow around them. There were big waves on the river. The boatman indicated a possible danger in the river. He then asked the scholar whether he knew how to swim. But the scholar replied. "I don't know swimming". The boatman then said to the scholar, "The whole of your life is spoilt." Our life is full of struggle and risks. The scholar and the boatman

There was a poor boatman in a village. He was illiterate. He used to row boat from morning till evening only to meet his both ends. There was a no meaning of knowledge to him.

It was a month of Baishakh. A scholar got into his boat. He was enjoying his journey very much because the weather was very fine. It was almost dark.

He was gossiping with the boatman. “Did you have any knowledge about the creation of the universe?” the scholar asked the boatman. “No,” replied the boatman.

The scholar got astonished and told him, “Without the knowledge of astronomy half of your life is spoil. The boatman was sad and thought of the uselessness of his life.

He again asked the boatman, “Do you know about the history of human civilization?” The reply of the boatman was the same as before. This time the scholar told the boatman that he had already spoilt three fourths of his life and he could not come to any use to the society. The boatman kept silent and went on rowing boat in a sad mood.

Suddenly, the weather became gusty. The sky was overcast with clouds. There was darkness all around. There were also heavy showers with lightening. The boat was about to capsize. The scholar was trembling with fear. But the boatman was very quiet because he was used to this weather. He asked the scholar. “Sir, do you know how to swim?” The scholar replied, crying, “No”. “Now the boatman said, Alas! Your life is totally spoilt. Pray to god for your safety.”

A Scholar and a Boatman Story

In a small Bangladeshi village, there lived a poor boatman who couldn’t read or write. Every day, from morning till evening, he rowed his boat across the river just to earn enough to eat. It was the start of the summer season, and one day, the boatman had only one passenger—a wise scholar.

The boatman set off, and as the boat moved smoothly along the river, the scholar asked him if he had ever studied history. The boatman replied no, sir. The scholar shook his head sadly and said that without knowing history, one-fourth of his life was wasted. The boatman stayed quiet and kept rowing as the scholar looked at the green riverbanks and the clear sky.

After some time, the scholar asked again if the boatman knew geography. Once again, the boatman replied no. The scholar sighed and said that half of his life was wasted. The boatman didn’t respond and kept rowing. The scholar, wanting to test his knowledge further, asked if he knew anything about science. The boatman said no, sir. The scholar shook his head again and said that three-fourths of his life was wasted.

The boatman remained silent. Suddenly, dark clouds covered the sky. A strong storm, locally called Kalboishakhi, began blowing across the river, making the water rough. The scholar became very scared as the boat rocked from side to side. Seeing the scholar’s fear, the boatman calmly asked if the scholar knew how to swim. The scholar, now frightened, replied no in a shaky voice.

The boatman smiled and said the boat is about to sink. It seems your whole life is in danger. All your book knowledge won’t help you now.

THE SCHOLAR AND THE BOATMAN

Once a flippant scholar was going to a place by boat. It was the beginning of the summer season. The boatman set sail and the boat was advancing smoothly. The scholar said to the boatman, "Did you read history?" The boatman said, "No". The scholar told him that without any knowledge of history one-fourth of his life was spoilt. He looked at the beautiful scenery and asked again whether he had read geography. As usual the reply of the boatman was in the negative. This time the. scholar said that one half of the boatman's life was spoilt. Then they were silent for some time. It was afternoon. The scholar broke the silence and said to the boatman, "Do you know anything about science?" "No, nothing do I know of science", was the answer of the boatman. The scholar said to him that his life was of no use. Three-fourths of his life were spoilt. Hearing this the boatman remained silent. All on a sudden the sky became covered with dark clouds. The 'kalboishakhi' began to blow in the form of a storm. The scholar was very much frightened. This time the boatman said to him, "Sir, do you know how to swim?" The scholar replied in the negative in a pitiful voice. The boatman said, "The boat is going to sink. Now I see, the whole of your life is spoiled. Your bookish knowledge is of no use."
