The Emergence of Independent Bangladesh

(a) Yahya Khan declared martial law, banned Awami League and ordered arrest of Sheikh Mujib.

(b) The West Pakistan rulers, however, were completely against Mujib's demand for greater

autonomy.

(c) On April 17, 1971, the first government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was formed and Mujib was made the first President of the country in his absence.

(d) Soon after that Muktibahini was formed and it started strong resistance against the Pak Army.

(e) After nine months of bloody war, Bangladesh became independent and Sheikh Mujib took the charge of reconstructing the war-torn country.

(f) In the general election of Pakistan in 1970, Awami League won on a massive majority under Mujib's leadership.

(g) His party swooped in all but two of East Pakistan's quota of seats in the National Assembly.

(h) In a historic speech at the Racecourse Ground in Dhaka on March 7, 1971, Mujib called for the independence of Bangladesh.

(i) On the night of March 25, 1971, Pak Army launched Operation Searchlight and started large scale genocide of the innocent Bengalis and arrested Sheikh Mujib.

(j) The then Pak President Yahya Khan delayed the Awami League from forming the Provincial government.

Completing Story:


Once, there lived a shrewd barber in a village. He was more than just a barber; he pretended to be a doctor who knew all about diseases and their cures. The barber was particularly known as a specialist in treating boils, claiming to have three different methods to cure them. To him, cutting boils was as simple as shaving a beard.


Patients came to him from far and near, complaining of various ailments. In pain and agony, they cried out, desperate for relief. Finding no other option, the poor village folk called on the barber to treat their illnesses. With his razor, he would operate on their boils confidently, boasting about his skills.


Some of his patients were fortunate enough to be cured, and the barber prided himself on his success. However, whether by skill or luck, his fame continued to grow, and more villagers turned to him for help, trusting his self-proclaimed expertise.
