Part A—Reading Test (Marks-70)

Read the passage. Then answer the questions no. 1, 2 and 3:

Everyone must play a part in protecting the environment. There are many things you can do on your own everyday to help save the planet. Here are some suggestions.

REDUCE! Really, the best thing we can do for the planet is to use its resources properly. Our unplanned activities are mainly responsible for the environmental crisis. Here are some questions you can ask yourself before buying something, "Do I really need this?" or ask the question, "Will this last a long time?" Some other questions may be "Do I know how this item was made, how it will be used and how it will be disposed of?"

REUSE! What do you think of using your own ceramic cup or mug at your school or local club? It means there are no plastic cups to throw away. You can wash it and reuse it everyday. Unfortunately, we are encouraged to buy a new "improved" item even if the one we have can be repaired or reused. When we buy things, we should buy those that are durable, we should use them properly, and have them repaired when necessary. If we practise this, many things will not only last a lifetime, but also be passed on for future use. However, if something is truly unusable for its original purposes, try to be more creative and think of how else it might be used. When you're done with it, think of whether someone else might be able to use it. You can donate some of the things to the poor. You may also sell some of your used items through personal advertisements in a local newspaper or in social media.

RECYCLE! Rather than throwing an item out when neither you nor anyone else can make use of it, have it recycled. And if recycling is not possible, it is better to send goods to a landfill or have them burned up. Find out what types of materials can be recycled in your area. Clean and sort the materials before putting them out in the bin. Recycling your drink and food cans means there will be less trash in resource recovery facility or landfill. Moreover, company can use the old cans to make new ones.

2. Answer the following questions: (2×5=10)

(a) How many suggestions are given in the passage to save the planet? What are they? There are exactly three main suggestions given in the passage to save our beautiful planet. These three important suggestions are "Reduce," "Reuse," and "Recycle." We must practice these three good habits in our daily life. If we follow these simple rules carefully, we can easily protect our environment from pollution and destruction.

(b) Why is it important to reduce our consumption of resources?

It is very important to reduce our consumption because the earth has a limited amount of resources. Right now, human beings are doing many unplanned activities and wasting too many things. This bad habit is creating a huge environmental crisis all over the world. By reducing what we use every day, we can save the earth's valuable resources for our future generations.

(c) What does the phrase "try to be more creative" suggest in the passage?

The phrase "try to be more creative" means that we should use our brain to think of new ideas. Instead of throwing an old or broken item away into the dustbin, we should try to change it into something useful. For example, we can use an old plastic bottle as a beautiful flower pot. This creative thinking helps to reduce waste and keeps our environment clean.

(d) Explain how donating items to the poor help both society and the environment. Donating old items to poor people is a very great and helpful habit. First of all, it helps society because poor people can get the clothes or things they desperately need without spending any money. Secondly, it highly helps the environment. Because we are giving the old items to someone else, those items do not become garbage. Therefore, they do not pollute the earth.

(e) Do you think recycling can contribute to the development of our country? How?

Yes, I strongly believe that recycling can greatly help in the fast development of our country. When we recycle old things like paper or plastic, we reduce the total amount of waste in our country. It also saves a lot of raw materials. Big companies can easily make brand new products from old ones. This saves a lot of money and protects our beautiful nature at the same time.

(a) According to the poem what is the importance of solitude?

Solitude means being completely alone. The poem teaches us a very harsh truth about human life and friendship. It says that solitude is very important because we must learn to face our sadness alone. When we are happy, rich, and smiling, the whole world wants to be our friend. But when we are sad or in pain, people leave us. So, solitude teaches us to be strong by ourselves.

(b) What makes the poet stop by the woods?

The poet was traveling on his horse on a very dark and cold evening. Suddenly, he saw a deep, dark, and extremely beautiful forest. The forest was slowly filling up with soft, white snow. The natural scenery was so peaceful, quiet, and magical that he could not control his mind. This deep beauty of nature made him stop his journey to enjoy the view.

(c) Why cann't the poet enjoy the natural scenery in the woods?

The poet really wanted to stay in that beautiful, snowy forest forever. But suddenly, he remembered his real life. (d) What do the books hold for their lovers in between their outside covers?

For the people who love to read, a book is not just paper and ink. In between their outside covers, the books hold amazing magic and grand surprises. (e) How does the poet personify time?

From the outside, it looks like a simple object. But when a child opens the pages, it magically unlocks a wonderful new world of pure imagination, joy, and adventure.

(h) How is Mary's hair described in the poem 'The Sands of Dee'?

In the poem, the dead girl Mary's beautiful hair is described in a very sad and painful way. After the cruel sea waves took her life, her dead body was found in the water. Part B—Writing Test (Marks-30)

10. Read the beginning of the following story and complete it in your own way. Give a suitable title to it.

Title: The Reward of Kindness

Late one rainy evening, Siyam was alone at home reading a book. Suddenly he heard a soft knock on the door. At first, he thought it was wind. But then the knock came again, louder this time. He opened the door and saw something that surprised him greatly.

Standing on his front porch was a very old and poor man. The man was completely wet from the heavy rain and he was shivering in the extreme cold. The old man was wearing very torn clothes. Siyam also noticed that the old man was holding a small, weak street puppy inside his jacket to keep the little animal warm. Siyam felt a deep pain in his heart seeing their terrible condition in the bad weather. He immediately held the old man's hand and asked him to come inside his warm house.

Siyam quickly ran to his room and brought a clean, dry towel. He also gave the old man some of his father's old but warm clothes to wear. After that, Siyam went straight to the kitchen. He worked very fast and made a big, hot bowl of chicken soup for the tired old man. He also poured some warm milk in a small bowl for the little hungry puppy. The old man ate the hot food with tears of pure joy in his eyes. He blessed Siyam from the bottom of his heart for showing such great kindness to a stranger.

Siyam made a soft bed for the old man in the guest room. The old man and his puppy slept very peacefully for the whole night. Siyam felt very happy because he could help someone in danger. He realized that giving shelter to a poor person is the best work a human being can do.

When the sun came out the next morning, the rain finally stopped. The old man thanked Siyam many times and prepared to leave. Before walking out the door, the old man smiled warmly and said, "You saved two lives last night, my dear son. The Almighty Creator will always protect you from all dangers." Siyam felt a wonderful peace in his mind. He learned a great lesson that helping a helpless creature brings the highest happiness in life.

Sajid: Hi Rafi. Yes, I am fine, but my mind is very sad today. I saw the front page news about the terrible bus accident. Road accidents have become a daily problem in our beautiful country.

Rafi: You are exactly right, my friend. It is a major national crisis now. Many innocent people are dying every day. What do you think are the main causes behind these deadly road accidents?

Sajid: I think reckless and fast driving is the biggest cause. Most of our drivers drive their vehicles at a very high speed. They constantly try to overtake other cars dangerously on the narrow roads.

Rafi: I totally agree with you. Furthermore, many of our drivers are completely illiterate and do not have any proper training. They do not understand the traffic signals at all. Sometimes they even drive big buses with fake licenses.

Sajid: Yes, that is a huge problem. And we cannot ignore the bad condition of our roads. There are many dangerous holes and broken parts on the highways. During the rainy season, these broken roads easily cause cars to slip and crash.

Rafi: That is very true. But my friend, we should not just blame the drivers and the roads. The common people are also very responsible. Many people walk on the busy roads carelessly.

Sajid: Absolutely! People use their mobile phones while crossing the street. They do not use the foot over-bridges even when they are available. This foolish behavior leads to sudden deaths.

Rafi: Exactly. So, how can we solve this terrible problem and save innocent lives in our country?

Sajid: First of all, the government must be very strict. The traffic laws must be applied properly. If any driver breaks the rules or drives too fast, his license should be canceled and he must be punished heavily.

Rafi: Yes! Also, the proper authority must repair the broken roads immediately. They should give proper education and training to all drivers before giving them a real driving license.

Sajid: Most importantly, we need to create public awareness among the general people. Pedestrians must be very careful on the road. They must always use zebra crossings and foot over-bridges to cross busy streets safely.

Rafi: I completely agree with your great ideas. If everyone follows the traffic rules and values their own life, the number of road accidents will surely decrease. Thank you, Sajid, for this very important discussion.

Sajid: You are most welcome, Rafi. Let us promise to always stay safe on the road and tell others to do the same!
