Part A-Reading Test Marks-50

Read the passage. Then answer the questions no. 1 and 2: Mother Teresa was moved by the sight of the sick and dying on the streets of Kolkata. She founded a home for the dying destitute and named it 'Nirmol Hriday', meaning 'Pure Heart'. She and her fellow nuns brought the dying people off the streets of kolkata to this home. They were lovingly looked after and cared for. Since then many men, women and children have been taken from the streets and carried to Nirmol Hriday. These unloved and uncared for people get an opportunity to die in an environment of kindness and love. In their last hours they get human and divine love, and can feel they are also children of God. The Missionaries of charity try to find jobs for those who survive, or send them to homes where they can live happily for some more years in a caring environment. Regarding commitment to family. Mother Teresa said, "May be in our own family, we have somebody, who is feeling lonely, who is feeling sick, who is feeling worried. Are we there? Are we willing to give until it hurts in order to be with our families, or do we put our interest first? We must remember that love begins at home and we must also remember that future of humanity passes through the family." Mother Teresa's work has been recognised throughout the world and she received a number of awards. These include the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971), the Nehru Prize for promotion of international peace and understanding (1972), the Balzan Prize (1978), the Nobel Peace Prize (1979) and the Bharat Ratna (1980). Mother Teresa died at the age of 87, on 5 September 1997. The world salutes her for her love and compassion for humanity. She has taught us how to extend our hand towards those who need our love and support irrespective of creed, caste and religion. Part B—Writing Test (Marks—50)

Answer to the Question No. 8

Tree Plantation

Tree plantation means planting trees in a planned way. It is the act of planting saplings in various places to increase the forest area and green cover of our country. We should plant trees for our own survival and well-being. Trees are our best friends. They give us oxygen to breathe, provide us with food, fruits, wood, and shelter. They also protect us from natural calamities like floods and cyclones and prevent soil erosion. Most importantly, trees absorb carbon dioxide and help maintain ecological balance, which is crucial in fighting climate change. The best time for tree plantation is the rainy season, from June to July, when saplings can get enough water to grow. We can plant trees in any open space, such as on the banks of roads, in school and college premises, in homestead areas, and on fallow lands. Taking care of the planted trees is as important as planting them. We must protect the saplings from goats and cattle by fencing them. We should also water them regularly and use necessary fertilizers. The government should play a vital role in this regard by undertaking comprehensive tree plantation programs and encouraging people through mass media. It can also supply saplings free of cost to motivate people to plant more trees.

Answer to the Question No. 9

The Reward of True Learning

Adib is a brilliant student. Though he wants to make a good result, he does not attend classes regularly. Rather than going to a coaching center, he memorizes answers from guidebooks and sheets and finds that he cannot cut a good figure in the exams. One day his class teacher called him to his room after class. The teacher, Mr. Karim, was a kind and wise man. He asked Adib, "My boy, you are intelligent, but why are your exam results not improving?" Adib looked down and explained his method of studying from guidebooks. Mr. Karim smiled gently and said, "Memorizing without understanding is like building a house without a foundation. It will surely collapse." He advised Adib to attend classes regularly to understand the lessons properly. He explained that classroom lectures and discussions would clear his concepts. Adib realized his mistake and felt very ashamed of his actions. From the next day, he started attending all his classes regularly and listened to his teachers' lectures with full attention. He found that learning became much more interesting and easier. In the next exam, he could answer the questions from his own understanding instead of relying on memorized answers. As a result, he made an excellent result and stood first in his class. He went to his teacher to express his gratitude for the valuable advice that had changed his life.

Answer to the Question No. 10

Students' Subject Preferences

The given pie chart illustrates the interest of the students of a secondary school in four different subjects: English, Bangla, Math, and Others. The chart shows the percentage of students who prefer each subject.

According to the chart, English is the most popular subject among the students, with 30% of them showing interest in it. This indicates a strong preference for learning English, which is an international language. The second most popular subjects are Bangla and Math, both of which are preferred by an equal percentage of students, 25% each. This shows that the students give equal importance to their mother tongue and the fundamental subject of mathematics. The remaining 20% of the students have interests in other subjects, which are grouped together in one category.

In summary, the pie chart reveals that English is the subject of highest interest, followed equally by Bangla and Math. A significant portion of students also has interests beyond these core subjects.

Answer to the Question No. 12

A Dialogue on the Importance of Learning Computer

Myself: Hello, Adila! How are you?

Adila: I'm fine, thank you. What about you?

Myself: I'm fine too. But why do you look so worried?

Adila: Actually, I'm concerned about my future. I feel I lack important skills for the modern world. For example, I have very little knowledge about computers.

Myself: Oh, I see. In that case, you should definitely learn how to use a computer. It's very essential in this age of science and technology.

Adila: Is it really that important? How can it help me?

Myself: Of course, it's important! The computer is used in every sector of our life. For your higher studies, you will need it for research, preparing assignments, and online learning. Adila: That's true. What about in professional life?

Myself: In professional life, computer skills are a must. Most jobs today, from office work to creative fields, require computer proficiency. You can also communicate with people all over the world, get information, and even earn money online if you have good computer skills. Adila: I never thought about it that way. You've really opened my eyes. Where do you think I should start?

Myself: You can join a good computer training center. There are many in our town. They offer basic courses that are perfect for beginners.

Adila: Thank you so much for your valuable suggestions. I will talk to my parents and join a course as soon as possible.

Myself: You're most welcome. I'm sure you'll do great.
