Part A-Reading Test Marks-50

Read the passage. Then answer the questions below:

Humans can neither change the sun's radiation nor the earth's orbit around the sun. But they can control the increase in the amount of greenhouse gases and its effect on the atmosphere. Only during the last hundred years the carbon dioxide concentration has been raised alarmingly, in the atmosphere and we humans can be held responsible for this. The main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere is the burning of fossil fuels Since the end of the 19th century, industrial activities increased rapidly giving rise to many factories. These factories required energy, which was produced through the combustion of coal. Besides coal, other sources of energy such as mineral oil and natural gas were also burned to heat our houses, run cars and airplanes or to produce electricity.) Nowadays, about 85 million barrels of crude oil are burned daily. Every time a fossil raw material is burned, it releases carbon dioxide into the air. Therefore, it is clear that more and more greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide are being generated worldwide by humans. Moreover, we are also strengthening the greenhouse effect by deforestation, which means cutting down trees. Every year enormous areas of forests are destroyed by people to obtain wood and to clear regions for mining and to create pasture. This loss of the forest causes dual problems. Trees that are burned up release large volumes of carbon dioxide gas into the air. On the other hand, as forests absorb a lot of carbon dioxide from the air and deliver oxygen instead, we also destroy an important storehouse of carbon dioxide when we clear forests.

1. Choose the correct answer from the alternatives: Marks 1times7=7

Answer to the Question No. 1 (MCQ)

(a) (i) carbon dioxide

(b) (iv) generating

(c) (iii) emission of energy as electromagnetic wave

(d) (ii) cutting down trees

(e) (ii) take in

(f) (i) coal, mineral oil and natural gas

(g) (iv) the moving or rotation of the earth

Answer to the Question No. 2 (Short Questions)

(a) How can trees help us in maintaining ecological balance?

Ans: Trees play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. According to the passage, they help us by absorbing a large amount of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere and delivering oxygen instead. In this way, they act as an important storehouse of carbon dioxide and keep the air clean.

(b) What is the impact of fossil fuels on the atmosphere?

Ans: The impact of fossil fuels on the atmosphere is very harmful. The passage states that the burning of fossil fuels like coal, mineral oil, and natural gas is the main cause of the increase in carbon dioxide levels. This increased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere strengthens the greenhouse effect, leading to global warming.

(c) What are out of humans' control?

Ans: According to the passage, two major natural phenomena are out of humans' control. These are the sun's radiation and the earth’s orbit around the sun.

(d) What things can human beings do for a congenial atmosphere?

Ans: To ensure a congenial atmosphere, human beings can take two important steps. Firstly, they can control and reduce the burning of fossil fuels to lower the emission of greenhouse gases. Secondly, they can stop deforestation, which involves cutting down trees, to preserve the natural absorbers of carbon dioxide.

(e) What main idea do you get from the passage? Write the answer within two or three sentences.

Ans: The main idea of the passage is that human activities are the primary cause of the alarming increase in greenhouse gases. Specifically, the burning of fossil fuels for industrial activities and the widespread deforestation for wood and land are seriously damaging our atmosphere and strengthening the harmful greenhouse effect.

Part B—Writing Test (Marks—50)

Answer to the Question No. 8 (Paragraph)

Water Pollution

Water pollution means the contamination of water bodies like rivers, canals, lakes, and oceans, making the water unsafe for use. Water is called life because no living being, including humans, animals, and plants, can survive without it. Water is essential for drinking, cooking, cleaning, agriculture, and industry. Water gets polluted in many ways. Industrial mills and factories dump their toxic chemicals and waste products directly into rivers and canals. Farmers use chemical fertilizers and pesticides on their lands, which get washed into water bodies during rainfall. Moreover, improper sewage disposal and throwing household waste into water also cause severe pollution. The effects of water pollution are devastating. It causes various water-borne diseases like cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid. Polluted water also kills fish and other aquatic animals, destroying the aquatic ecosystem. To prevent water pollution, we must take immediate measures. Industrial waste must be treated before being discharged. We should reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and promote organic farming. Lastly, creating public awareness is crucial to stop people from throwing waste into water bodies.

Answer to the Question No. 9 (Completing Story)

A Mother's Devotion

Once there was a small boy named Bayazid. He was very brilliant and devoted to his mother. One night he was studying by the side of the bed of his mother who was ill. Suddenly his mother woke up and told him to give her a glass of water. But there was no water in the pitcher in the room. Bayazid went to the kitchen but found all the pots empty. He knew that the only source of water nearby was a spring quite far from their house. Without a second thought, he took the pitcher and ran towards the spring in the dark and cold night. After fetching the water, he quickly returned to his mother's room. He found that his mother had fallen asleep again. He did not want to disturb her sleep. So, he stood silently beside her bed, holding the glass of water in his hand. The night was very cold, but he did not move, waiting for his mother to wake up. The whole night passed this way. In the morning, when his mother woke up, she was surprised to see her son standing with the glass of water. Tears of love and affection rolled down her cheeks. She raised her hands and prayed to Allah for her son's well-being and success.

Answer to the Question No. 12 (Dialogue)

A Dialogue Between Two Friends about Improving English

Ahnaf: Hello Mohon, how are you? You look a bit worried.

Mohon: Hello Ahnaf, I am fine, but I am a bit worried about my English. I am very weak in this subject.

Ahnaf: Oh, I see. Don't worry. If you try sincerely, you can definitely improve your English. Mohon: But I don't know how to improve it. Could you please give me some suggestions?

Ahnaf: Of course! First of all, you need to learn the basic rules of English grammar. You should also enrich your vocabulary by learning new words every day.

Mohon: That's a good idea. What else should I do?

Ahnaf: You should practice the four skills of English—reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Read English newspapers, magazines, and storybooks regularly. This will improve both your reading skills and vocabulary.

Mohon: And what about speaking and listening?

Ahnaf: For that, you should try to speak in English with your friends and teachers. Don't be shy about making mistakes. You can also watch English movies and listen to English news to improve your listening and pronunciation.

Mohon: Thank you so much, Ahnaf. Your suggestions are very helpful. I will try my best to follow them from today.

Ahnaf: You're welcome, Mohon. I am sure you will do well.
