Devastating Flood Claims Lives and Affects Thousands in Dhaka

Staff Correspondent, Dhaka, July 5, 2022: A recent flood has ravaged different areas of Dhaka district, claiming the lives of 5 individuals and affecting over 30,000 others. The water level of river Buriganga has surpassed the danger level, resulting in the submergence of several villages in Sadarghat, Puran Dhaka, and Islampur unions. The impact of this catastrophic flood has been severe, washing away standing crops and livestock and inundating the dwellings of helpless citizens.

Many flood victims have sought refuge in the relief camps established in high schools and colleges, but are currently facing a dire shortage of food, water, and medicine. Furthermore, the majority of tube-wells in the affected areas are now under water, leading to a significant scarcity of pure drinking water. As a result, waterborne diseases have broken out, causing 5 deaths, including 3 children and 2 elderly women, due to diarrhoea.

While the government and district administration have provided some relief materials, they are currently insufficient to meet the needs of the flood-affected population. Therefore, it is imperative for individuals from all walks of life to come forward and help these suffering communities by providing relief goods such as dry food, medicine, and pure drinking water. This is a crucial moment for everyone to show solidarity and work together to alleviate the plight of those affected by this natural calamity.

Recent Flood Ravages Bogra District

A. B. M. Minhaj Sadman, Bogra, 5 September 2023:

The relentless downpour over the past few weeks has plunged Bogra district into a severe flood crisis, exacerbating the already dire situation. As the floodwaters continue to rise, nine out of eleven thanas in the district have succumbed to the deluge, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

Communities have been ravaged, with homes submerged, crops destroyed, and fertile lands inundated. The flood-affected population now finds themselves displaced, seeking refuge and assistance from those fortunate enough to be spared from nature's wrath.

In response to this calamity, the Health Adviser embarked on a visit to the flood-affected villages of Bogra district, demonstrating solidarity and offering much-needed relief to the beleaguered populace. Arriving via helicopter, he landed at Bogra Zilla School ground, where crowds of affected individuals, representing all strata of society, eagerly awaited his arrival.

With compassion and empathy, the honorable adviser distributed essential relief supplies and a substantial sum of monetary aid among the affected families, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the despair. The sight of the adviser standing shoulder to shoulder with the afflicted brought solace and reassurance to the hearts of the people.

In his address, the adviser pledged unwavering support from the caretaker government, assuring the flood-affected communities that the entire administrative machinery would remain steadfast in their commitment to alleviating their suffering and rebuilding their lives in the face of adversity.

As Bogra grapples with the aftermath of this natural disaster, the resilience and unity of its people shine through, offering a beacon of hope for brighter days ahead despite the challenges that lie ahead.

Flood in the Northern District of the Country

Dhaka, June 3, 2023 (by staff correspondent):

Sudden floods caused by continuous rainfall and water rushing in from upstream regions have inundated the northern districts of the country. Most houses and crop fields are submerged, leaving people homeless. Many have taken shelter in schools and office buildings. Livestock and poultry are in critical condition.

Tragically, three men, two women, and two children have died. Numerous cattle and other animals have been seen floating in the floodwaters. The floods have uprooted many trees and completely destroyed standing crops. People stranded by the flood are in desperate need of food, clothes, drinking water, and medicine.

Local voluntary organizations have distributed some relief materials, but these are far from sufficient. The government and organizations like the Red Crescent Society need to step in urgently to alleviate the suffering of the affected people. Medical teams should be mobilized immediately to prevent the outbreak of diseases, which could become epidemic if not addressed quickly.

The situation is dire, and prompt action is necessary to provide relief and support to those affected by this devastating flood.
