Ans. King Lear, A Tragic Figure
Once upon a time there was a king in England. He had three daughters. He made up his mind to divide his kingdom among them. He wanted to know, firstly, how much they loved him.
His name was king Lear. As he grew old, he decided it was time to hand over his responsibilities to his daughters. He had three daughters, but he loved his youngest daughter, Cordelia, the most. King Lear wanted to give her the best part of the kingdom. To determine who deserved what, he called all his daughters to the court and asked them how much they loved him.
First, King Lear asked his eldest daughter, Goneril, to express her love. Goneril declared before everyone, "Sir, I love you more than words can say. You are dearer to me than my own life. I love you with all my heart and will always love you." The king was pleased with her answer.
Next, he turned to his second daughter, Regan, and asked the same question. Regan replied, "I love you as much as my elder sister, but indeed I love you more. My love for you will never change. My happiness is in loving you." King Lear was even more satisfied with Regan's response.
Finally, the king asked his youngest and dearest daughter, Cordelia, "What can you say to show your love more than your sisters? Speak."
Cordelia simply said, "Nothing, my lord."
Lear, surprised, asked again, "Nothing?"
Cordelia repeated, "Nothing."
King Lear, confused and disappointed, said, "Nothing will come of nothing. Speak again."
Cordelia responded, "I am unhappy that I cannot express my love in grand words. I love your Majesty as a daughter should, no more, no less."
King Lear was not satisfied with this honest and simple answer. He expected more flattery and grand declarations. Out of frustration and emotion, he disowned Cordelia, cutting off all ties and denying her any share of the kingdom. Thus, the elder sisters, Goneril and Regan, became the successors.
In the end, King Lear's decision led to tragedy. He could not get along with his elder daughters, and they treated him poorly. Heartbroken and unable to bear their cruelty, Lear wandered into the wilderness. Only Cordelia, the daughter he had disowned, came to his aid and stood by him in his time of need, proving her true love and loyalty.
The True Measure of Love
Once upon a time, there was a king in England who had three daughters. As he grew older, he decided it was time to divide his kingdom among them. However, before doing so, he wanted to determine how much each daughter loved him.
One day, he called his daughters to his throne room and asked them to express their love for him in words.
The eldest daughter, Seraphina, stepped forward first. "Father," she said, "I love you as much as all the wealth and treasures of this kingdom. My love for you is like gold and diamonds, shining and precious."
The king nodded, somewhat pleased, and then turned to his second daughter, Genevieve. "And you, my dear, how much do you love me?"
Genevieve smiled and said, "Father, I love you more than all the beauty and splendor of this world. My love is like the sun that brightens the day and the moon that lights the night."
The king was quite happy with this response and finally turned to his youngest daughter, Cordelia. "And you, my dear Cordelia, how much do you love me?"
Cordelia looked at her father with gentle eyes and said, "Father, I love you as much as salt."
The king was taken aback and somewhat disappointed by Cordelia's seemingly simple response. "Salt? Is that all?" he asked, feeling hurt and undervalued.
Cordelia nodded, "Yes, Father. Salt may seem ordinary, but it is essential. It adds flavor to our food and preserves it. Without salt, our meals would be bland and life would lack savor. My love for you is simple, constant, and indispensable."
The king did not understand the depth of Cordelia's words and, feeling insulted, decided to give her no part of the kingdom. He divided the land between Seraphina and Genevieve, who had professed their love in grander terms.
Years passed, and the kingdom began to suffer under the rule of Seraphina and Genevieve. They were more interested in their own pleasures and wealth than the well-being of the kingdom. The lands became neglected, and the people grew unhappy.
One day, a great famine struck the land. Food became scarce, and the importance of salt in preserving what little food they had left became evident. The king, now frail and wise with age, realized the true meaning of Cordelia's words. Salt was indeed essential, just as Cordelia’s love had been sincere and unwavering.
Regretful of his decision, the king sought out Cordelia, who had been living modestly in a neighboring kingdom. He begged for her forgiveness and asked her to return and help restore their homeland.
Cordelia, ever kind and loving, forgave her father and returned. With her wise and just leadership, she brought prosperity back to the kingdom. The people flourished, and the land once again became a place of happiness and abundance.
Moral of the Story: True love is not always grand or showy; it is often simple, constant, and essential.
