Narration (উক্তি)
Narration refers to the act of reporting the words of a speaker. In grammar, it is the process of changing the mode of speech from direct to indirect or vice versa.
(বক্তার বক্তব্যকে অন্যের নিকট বর্ণনা করাকেই Narration বা উক্তি বলে।)
There are two types of Narration:
Direct Speech (প্রত্যক্ষ উক্তি):
The speaker's exact words are quoted.
The speech is enclosed within Inverted Commas or Quotation Marks (" ").
Example: He said, "I am busy now."
Indirect Speech (পরোক্ষ উক্তি):
The speaker's words are reported by someone else in their own language, without changing the meaning.
Inverted commas are removed, and the tense/pronouns usually change.
Example: He said that he was busy then.
Key Components of a Sentence
To solve narration, you must identify two specific parts of the sentence:
Example: He said to me, "I am playing football."
Reporting Verb: The verb outside the inverted commas (said to).
Reported Speech: The sentence inside the inverted commas ("I am playing football").
General Rules for Changing Narration
To change Direct Speech into Indirect Speech, you generally need to make changes in five areas:
1. Person Change (সর্বনাম পরিবর্তন)
Pronouns inside the Reported Speech change based on the "SON" formula:
S (First Person): Changes according to the Subject of the Reporting Verb.
Direct: He said, "I do the work."
Indirect: He said that he did the work.
O (Second Person): Changes according to the Object of the Reporting Verb.
Direct: He said to me, "You are lucky."
Indirect: He told me that I was lucky.
N (Third Person): No change (Remains Unchanged).
Direct: He said, "She is reading."
Indirect: He said that she was reading.
2. Change of Tense (কাল পরিবর্তন)
If the Reporting Verb is in the Past Tense (e.g., said), the tense of the Reported Speech changes to the corresponding past form.
Direct Speech Tense | Changes to (Indirect Speech) |
Present Indefinite | Past Indefinite |
Present Continuous | Past Continuous |
Present Perfect | Past Perfect |
Past Indefinite | Past Perfect |
Past Continuous | Past Perfect Continuous |
Future (Will/Shall) | Future in the Past (Would/Should) |
Note: If the Reporting Verb is in the Present or Future Tense (e.g., says, will say), the tense of the Reported Speech does not change.
3. Change of Adverbs (Time & Place)
Words indicating nearness usually change to words indicating distance.
Now--- Then
Here --- There
Today --- That day
Tomorrow --- The next day
Yesterday --- The previous day
This --- That
4. Use of Linkers (সংযোগকারী অব্যয়)
The word used to join the two parts depends on the type of sentence inside the quotation marks:
Assertive Sentence: Use that.
Interrogative Sentence: Use if / whether (for Yes/No questions) or the WH-word (who, what, where, etc.).
Imperative Sentence: Use to (for positive) or not to (for negative).
Optative/Exclamatory: Use that.
5. Change of Reporting Verb
The verb said/said to changes according to the sentence mood:
Assertive: told (if object exists) or said.
Interrogative: asked or inquired of.
Imperative: ordered, requested, advised, or forbade.
Exclamatory: exclaimed with joy/sorrow.
Summary Example
Direct: Rina said to me, "I shall help you tomorrow."
Analysis for change:
Reporting Verb: said to --- told (Assertive).
Linker: Add that.
Person: I (1st person) follows Subject (Rina) --- She. You (2nd person) follows Object (me) --- me.
Tense: Shall help (Future) --- Would help.
Adverb: Tomorrow --- The next day.
Indirect: Rina told me that she would help me the next day.
