An Ant and a Grasshopper

Once there were two friends, Mr. Grasshopper and Mr. Ant. They were very different from each other. Mr. Ant was hardworking and always busy, while Mr. Grasshopper was Sleepy and really enjoyed singing.

As winter was coming, Mr. Ant was happily checking the food he had saved during the summer. Just then, Mr. Grasshopper came along, looking tired and hungry. He told Mr. Ant he was very hungry and asked for some food.

Mr. Ant asked him what he had been doing all summer. Mr. Grasshopper said that he spent his summer singing and having fun.

Mr. Ant was surprised and told him that spending the whole summer singing wasn’t wise. He reminded Mr. Grasshopper that if he didn’t work, he wouldn’t have food for the winter.

Feeling sad, Mr. Grasshopper admitted that he made a big mistake. He should have worked like Mr. Ant instead of wasting time.

Mr. Ant felt sorry for his friend but explained that he only had enough food for himself. He also said that since Mr. Grasshopper spent the summer singing, maybe now he could dance in winter.

One summer day, a grasshopper was happily hopping and singing in a green field. He was full of joy, enjoying the sunshine and the pleasant weather. As he moved about, he saw an ant carrying a heavy grain of wheat. The ant was struggling to take it to her nest. The grasshopper laughed and said, “Why are you working so hard on such a beautiful day? Come and enjoy the sunshine with me!”

The ant stopped for a moment and replied, “I’m storing food for the winter. It won’t be sunny and warm forever. When the cold comes, I will have plenty to eat and a safe place to stay. You should think about doing the same.”

The grasshopper shook his head and laughed. “Why worry about winter now? There’s plenty of time to think about that. Let’s enjoy life while we can!” The ant didn’t argue further and went back to her work, carrying grain after grain to her nest.

The days passed, and summer slowly turned to autumn. The leaves fell, and soon, the winter arrived with its icy winds and snow. The once-green field was now white, and there was no food to be found anywhere. The grasshopper, who had spent all summer singing and dancing, now shivered in the cold. He had no food and no shelter.

Hungry and desperate, the grasshopper remembered the hardworking ant. He decided to visit her and ask for help. When he reached the ant’s nest, he saw that it was warm inside, and the ant had plenty of food stored. The grasshopper begged, “Dear Ant, I’m cold and starving. Please give me some food, or I will die.”

The ant looked at the grasshopper with pity but also reminded him, “I told you in the summer to prepare for the winter, but you didn’t listen. While I worked hard, you chose to play and waste time.”

The grasshopper felt ashamed and learned an important lesson. The ant, being kind, shared some food with the grasshopper but made him promise to work hard in the future.

From that day on, the grasshopper understood the value of planning and hard work. He decided never to waste his time again and always prepare for the future.

Moral: Hard work and planning ahead are essential for a secure future.

"You should have thought of winter then!" she chided before slamming the door in the grasshopper's face.

Thus, the grasshopper was left alone in the cold and snow, regretting his inaction and lack of preparation for the inevitable winter. The moral of the story being, as the adage goes, "Look before you leap."

এক সময়ের কথা, পিপড়ে আর ফড়িং নামে দুই বন্ধু ছিল। তবে তারা একদমই আলাদা স্বভাবের ছিল। পিপড়ে খুবই পরিশ্রমী, সবসময় কাজ নিয়ে ব্যস্ত থাকত। আর ফড়িং ছিল একটু অলস, সারাক্ষণ গান গেয়ে আনন্দে সময় কাটাতো।

শীতকালের আগে, পিপড়ে নিজের গ্রীষ্মে জমানো খাবারগুলো দেখে বেশ খুশি ছিল। ঠিক তখনই ফড়িং এসে হাজির। সে খুবই ক্লান্ত এবং ক্ষুধার্ত ছিল। ফড়িং বলল, আমি খুব ক্ষুধার্ত, তুমি কি আমাকে কিছু খাবার দেবে?

পিপড়ে অবাক হয়ে জিজ্ঞাসা করল, তুমি গ্রীষ্মে কী করেছিলে?

ফড়িং বলল, আমি গ্রীষ্মকালটা গান গেয়ে আর মজা করে কাটিয়েছি।

পিপড়ে তখন বলল, তুমি শুধু গান গেয়ে সময় কাটালে! শীতকালে যে খাবারের প্রয়োজন হবে, সেটা ভাবোনি?

ফড়িং লজ্জিত হয়ে বলল, হ্যাঁ, আমি বুঝতে পেরেছি বড় ভুল করেছি। আমারও তোমার মতো পরিশ্রম করা উচিত ছিল।

পিপড়ে একটু দুঃখ পেয়ে বলল, আমার কাছে নিজের জন্যই যথেষ্ট খাবার আছে। তুমি আগেই এসব ভেবে কাজ করা উচিত ছিল। গ্রীষ্মে তুমি যদি গান গাও, তাহলে শীতে হয়তো নাচতে পারবে।
