Rahima works in a big garment factory. There are more than five hundred workers in the factory. One day, as usual, she was busy at her work. Suddenly, she heard that there was an outbreak of fire from the short circuit. As ill news runs apace, the news spread very fast, among the workers. But no one noticed whether there was actually any fire or not. Having just heard the news, without any confirmation, all the workers of the factory became desperate to come out side.
But the factory had only one exit. And the path which led to this gate was very narrow. Even three men or women could not pass through this path side by side at a time. So, when all the workers of the factory were trying to come out along this narrow path, the path became congested with the workers. Many workers fell down on the path because of the jostling in the crowd and were trampled by the other workers. Some of them received severe injuries. In a word, a chaotic situation had been prevailing in the factory.
After observing the situation, the authority of the factory -took steps to pacify the workers. The authority announced through loud speaker that the news was a rumour and no fire had broken out. Actually, a pipe containing colour had burst out in the dying, section but it caused no casualties. After hearina, this announcement twice, the workers understood their follies and went back to their work.

Consequently, as the entire workforce attempted to escape through the limited exit, the passageway rapidly became clogged, and a stampede ensued. Due to the jostling and overcrowding, many laborers stumbled and were trampled underfoot by their colleagues, resulting in severe injuries. In short, a state of chaos reigned within the factory.
After surveying the situation, the management intervened to quell the disturbance. Through a public address system, they announced that the fire was a mere rumor, and no actual blaze had occurred. In reality, a pipe filled with dye had burst in the dyeing section, but there had been no fatalities. After hearing this statement twice, the workers comprehended their mistake and returned to their respective duties.

কিন্তু কারখানার একমাত্র প্রস্থান ছিল। এবং এই গেটে যাওয়ার পথটি খুব সংকীর্ণ ছিল। এমনকি তিনজন পুরুষ বা মহিলাও এই পথ দিয়ে পাশাপাশি যেতে পারত না। তাই, যখন কারখানার সমস্ত শ্রমিক এই সরু পথ ধরে বেরিয়ে আসার চেষ্টা করছিল, তখন পথটি শ্রমিকদের ভিড়ে ভিড়ের মতো হয়ে পড়ে। ভিড়ের ধাক্কায় অনেক শ্রমিক পথে পড়ে যান এবং অন্যান্য শ্রমিকদের দ্বারা পদদলিত হন। তাদের মধ্যে কয়েকজন গুরুতর আহত হন। এক কথায়, কারখানায় একটি বিশৃঙ্খল পরিস্থিতি বিরাজ করছিল।

সালমা একটি পোশাক কারখানায় কাজ করেন। কারখানায় পাঁচ শতাধিক শ্রমিক কাজ করেন। তাদের কারখানাটি একটি শিল্প এলাকায় অবস্থিত। এটি খুবই ঘনবসতিপূর্ণ যেখানে অনেক কারখানা গড়ে ওঠে। বেশিরভাগ পোশাক শ্রমিক খুবই দরিদ্র, যারা বেশিরভাগই আশা এবং আকাঙ্ক্ষার সন্ধানে গ্রাম থেকে আসেন। কিন্তু ভাগ্য সবসময় তাদের সাথে বিশ্বাসঘাতকতা করে। তারা পুরোপুরি শিক্ষিত নয়।
সালমা অন্যান্য পোশাক শ্রমিকদের সাথে তার কারখানায় আসেন যেখানে তিনি কাজ করেন একদিন, যথারীতি, তিনি তার কাজে ব্যস্ত ছিলেন। হঠাৎ তার কানে একটি শব্দ এলো যে শর্ট সার্কিট থেকে আগুন লেগেছে। খারাপ খবর দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়ার সাথে সাথে শ্রমিকদের মধ্যে খবরটি খুব দ্রুত ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। কিন্তু কেউ খেয়াল করেনি যে আসলে কোনও আগুন লেগেছে কিনা। সমস্ত শ্রমিক একসাথে একই পথে ছুটে গেল। কারখানায় কোনও অতিরিক্ত সিঁড়ি ছিল না।
কেউ কেউ চিৎকার করছিল এবং কেউ কেউ কাঁদছিল। কেউ কেউ সিঁড়িতে হোঁচট খেয়ে গুরুতর আহত হন। সালমা কোনওভাবে কারখানা থেকে বেরিয়ে আসতে সক্ষম হন। কিন্তু আতঙ্কে দুজন শ্রমিক নিহত হন এবং অনেকেই আহত হন। আসলে, কারখানায় কোনও আগুন লাগেনি। এটি কেবল একটি গুজব ছিল।
