IELTS Speaking Part-2 Something that you were given that you needed

Describe something that you were given that you needed

You should say:

·         What it was

·         Who gave it to you

·         Why you needed it

·         And explain how you felt about it

I was struggling to think of something that I was given because the older you get, the fewer presents you receive, but then I remembered that I was given my smartphone by my parents. I had completely forgotten about that! Prior to getting it, I had a rubbish phone. I can’t even remember the make of it, it was cheap and nasty and I was totally embarrassed by it. Not only that but it was next to useless because I couldn’t access the internet.

I kept pleading with my parents/wife/husband to get me a new one for my birthday, but I was absolutely convinced that they wouldn’t. To my surprise, when I opened my presents on my birthday, there was a brand-new, top of the range smartphone. I was over the moon. I have never owned such a luxury item before and I feel very lucky that they bought it for me. My parents aren’t well-off so it is a generous gift from them and, for that reason, I really appreciate it.

I could have saved up and bought one myself, but, to be brutally honest, I am hopeless with money. It burns a hole in my pocket – I’m definitely a spender rather than a saver so that is why I was delighted when I was given this new toy*. I have never had such a fancy phone before and, unfortunately, I am quite a clumsy person so I am terrified that I am going to drop it and smash the screen.

Not only is it a special present, but, like I said, my old one wasn’t a smart phone and it was pretty useless and I needed something to help me study English when I am out and about. I have downloaded several apps that I can use for language learning and I can listen to podcasts when I am on the train, which makes good use of my commuting time so it is invaluable to me. I couldn’t be without it now.

Describe something that you were given that you needed.

You should say:

  • What it was

  • Who gave it to you

  • Why you needed it

  • And explain how you felt about it

The most memorable gift that I was given, which I truly needed, was my smartphone. This might not seem significant to everyone, but it was a big deal for me. Before receiving it, I had a very basic phone—cheap, old-fashioned, and almost useless because it couldn’t access the internet. It was embarrassing to use and didn’t meet my needs at all.

I had been hinting for a while that I needed a new phone, but I was quite skeptical that my parents would get me one. On my birthday, I was surprised when I unwrapped a top-of-the-line smartphone. I was over the moon! It was the first time I had owned such a luxury item, and it made me feel extremely fortunate and grateful.

The reason I needed this smartphone was twofold. Firstly, my old phone was inadequate for modern needs, particularly because I wanted to improve my English. With this new phone, I could access various language-learning apps and listen to podcasts while commuting. This has been incredibly useful for my studies and made the most of my travel time.

Secondly, I could have saved up for the phone myself, but I’m terrible with managing money—I’m more of a spender than a saver. So receiving this phone as a gift was not only practical but also a generous gesture from my parents. They aren’t wealthy, so this gift was especially meaningful.

I was both thrilled and a bit anxious about the phone. I’m known for being quite clumsy, so I worried about dropping it and breaking the screen. Despite that, the smartphone has become an invaluable part of my daily life. I feel much more connected and efficient with it, and it has significantly improved my ability to study and manage my time.
