IELTS Speaking Part-2 Something that you own and want to replace

Describe something that you own and want to replace

You should say:

·        What it is

·        Where it is

·        When you got it

·        And explain why you want to replace it

I didn’t have to think long about my answer for this topic, as there is something I am desperate to replace and that is my computer. The laptop in question is roughly five years old and although that does not sound that old, in computer terms, it is a dinosaur. In the world of technology, electronic products are updated all the time and sadly, as soon as you buy something, it is already out-of-date.

There are a number of reasons why I’m dying to get a new PC. Firstly, my current one is incredibly slow. It takes at least ten minutes to boot it up when I switch it on – no exaggeration! Finally, when it is on, every operation is slow. It is painfully slow. Secondly, there is so little storage that I have to save everything to a separate hard drive. The problem with this is that I use my computer for work and when I need to take it somewhere, I need to take the hard drive as well. It’s such a pain!

The main reason why I haven’t replaced it yet is cost. To get a new one with the spec that I want would cost a fortune and I just don’t have that kind of money currently. I’m just not sure how much longer I can carry on using this one though, it’s on its last legs.

If I had the money to splash out on a new one, I wouldn’t know which one to get, as like I said, they become outdated so quickly. In a lot of ways, a desktop computer would be better for me because I do spend a lot of time working at home, but it wouldn’t have the portability of a laptop. When I need to take my computer with me for a presentation, for instance, I need something portable. Anyway, I need to save up first and when I have enough money, then I can worry about that problem.

Describe something that you own and want to replace

You should say:

  • What it is

  • Where it is

  • When you got it

  • And explain why you want to replace it

I didn't have to think long about my answer for this topic, as there's something I am desperate to replace: my computer. Specifically, my laptop, which is roughly five years old. Although that might not sound very old, in the world of technology, it's practically a dinosaur. Electronic products are constantly updated, and sadly, it seems like as soon as you buy something, it’s already outdated.

There are several reasons why I'm eager to get a new PC. First and foremost, my current laptop is incredibly slow. It takes at least ten minutes to boot up when I switch it on – and that's no exaggeration! Once it’s finally on, every operation is painfully slow. Second, the storage capacity is so limited that I have to save everything to an external hard drive. This is especially inconvenient since I use my computer for work and need to take the hard drive with me whenever I move the laptop. It’s such a hassle!

The main reason I haven’t replaced it yet is cost. Getting a new one with the specifications I want would be quite expensive, and I don’t have that kind of money at the moment. I’m just not sure how much longer I can continue using this one; it’s really on its last legs.

If I had the funds to splurge on a new computer, I wouldn’t even know which one to choose. Technology advances so rapidly that products become outdated almost as soon as they’re released. A desktop computer might be better for me since I spend a lot of time working from home, but it wouldn’t offer the portability of a laptop. For instance, when I need to take my computer for a presentation, I need something portable. For now, I need to save up first and then figure out which model best suits my needs.
