IELTS Speaking Part-2 something that you made and gave to someone else

Describe something that you made and gave to someone else

You should say:

·        What it was

·        Who you gave it to

·        When you gave it them

·        And explain how you felt about it

When I first read this question, I couldn’t think of anything that I have made and given to someone, as I am not a practical person and I’m not into making things. However, suddenly I

remembered that I once made a cake for my friend. I can’t remember precisely when it was, but I think it was about three years ago.

She was going through a rough period in her life; she had finished university and was struggling to get a job in her chosen field, which is journalism. She was really down and I wanted to do something to cheer her up. I knew that if I took her out for a meal, she would be embarrassed because she couldn’t afford to pay for herself and she would be annoyed if I offered to pay so I had to think of something else that didn’t cost money. That’s when I came up with the idea of making her a cake.

I’m not a particularly good cook and the recipe I chose was rather challenging. It was a three-layer chocolate cake and each layer was a different chocolate – white, dark and milk. Between each layer there was a chocolate mousse, which was a bit tricky to do but I managed it. Then the outside of the cake was covered in chocolate. By the time I finished I was covered in chocolate as well!

As soon as I finished it, I took it round to her house because I wanted her to try it when it was freshly-made. When she opened the door and saw me standing there with this huge and delicious-looking creation, she burst into tears. I thought this was a slight overreaction, but she then said she had just received a phone call with a job offer and was so overwhelmed by that and my cake. I was so pleased I had made the cake and, instead of cheering her up, we celebrated her new job with coffee and cake.

Describe something that you made and gave to someone else.

You should say:

  • What it was

  • Who you gave it to

  • When you gave it to them

  • And explain how you felt about it

When I first considered this topic, I struggled to recall something I had made and given to someone, as I’m not particularly handy or creative. However, I remembered an occasion when I made a cake for a friend, which stands out as a meaningful experience. Although I can’t pinpoint the exact date, it was approximately three years ago.

My friend was going through a challenging time in her life. She had recently completed her university studies and was struggling to find a job in journalism, her chosen field. Seeing her in such distress, I wanted to do something to lift her spirits. I knew that taking her out for a meal might make her uncomfortable due to financial constraints, and offering to pay could also be awkward. So, I decided to bake her a cake instead, as it was a thoughtful gesture that wouldn't cost much.

I’m not particularly skilled in the kitchen, and the recipe I chose was quite ambitious. It was a three-layer chocolate cake, with each layer made from a different type of chocolate—white, dark, and milk. In between each layer, I added a chocolate mousse, which was a bit tricky but manageable. The entire cake was then covered in a rich chocolate coating. By the end, I found myself covered in chocolate as well!

As soon as the cake was ready, I took it to her house to ensure she could enjoy it while it was still fresh. When she opened the door and saw me holding this large, delicious-looking cake, she was overwhelmed and burst into tears. Initially, I thought her reaction was a bit much, but she explained that she had just received a job offer and was emotional both about the job and the thoughtful cake.

I felt immense satisfaction from making the cake. Instead of merely cheering her up, we ended up celebrating her new job together with coffee and cake. It was a heartwarming experience and a reminder of how small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.
