I’ve been fortunate enough to build a strong network of friends who are supportive, compassionate, and open-minded. Among them, one person stands out as particularly special—my former boss and mentor, Eli. While our relationship might seem unconventional to some, it has been incredibly meaningful to both of us.

Eli and I crossed paths about two years ago during a training course for a posh restaurant that was about to open in town. Eli was our Filipino manager, and I was starting my career as a hostess for the first time. The world of hospitality, with all its intricacies and etiquette, was overwhelming, and I found myself struggling to keep up. Eli, with his patient teaching style and unwavering support, played a pivotal role in helping me navigate through those early challenges. If it hadn’t been for his guidance, I doubt I would have succeeded in my training or excelled in my role.

Our bond grew stronger through those demanding times, and now, our conversations can go on for hours. We discuss everything from family dynamics and career ambitions to personal happiness and life’s obstacles. Eli, as a mentor, provides me with invaluable advice and emotional support without any of the usual lecturing or “I told you so” moments. His ability to offer sincere compassion and encouragement is something I deeply admire.

Although we’re no longer working together as closely and don’t hang out as often as we’d like, our friendship remains as strong as ever. We keep each other updated on significant life events and offer mutual support when needed. When our schedules allow, we meet up for coffee or dinner to catch up. I genuinely treasure these moments and value the deep connection we share.
