Gosh, this is quite a tricky topic because I know a lot of people who are intelligent, but it is a struggle to say why I think they are an intellectual. I’ve decided to talk about a close friend of mine, who I would classify as very smart for a number of reasons.
Firstly, he is academically intelligent. He has a masters degree in something or other, sorry it has completely slipped my mind what it is... but I guess to be able to study to a high level such as this means that he is bright. On top of that, he has a top job in a university – not teaching, but something in HR. However, I would like to focus on other areas which I think make him stand out as being clever.
The area I’d like to focus on is common sense. What do I mean by that? Well, it means a natural ability to make good judgements and behave in a practical and sensible way. Sadly, this is a skill that is lacking in many people today. To give you an example, one of the things he does, which I think exemplifies his common sense is realising that you cannot achieve anything without dedication. You cannot change your life without putting in the time, without putting in the effort and without putting up with the setbacks required to master whatever it is you have chosen to do.
For example, when he wanted to learn Spanish then he started speaking Spanish. When he wanted to lose weight, he lowered his calorie intake and exercised regularly. He realizes that with everything in life there are no shortcuts. As a result, he keeps progressing and developing and doesn’t sit still. I think this is the greatest sign of intellect rather than the number of qualifications he has.

I’d like to talk about a close friend of mine whom I consider to be exceptionally intelligent. His name is James, and although I know many people who are intellectually gifted, James stands out for several reasons.

James and I have been friends for several years. We met during our undergraduate studies and have maintained a strong friendship ever since. We often engage in deep conversations about various topics, which has given me a clear insight into his intellectual abilities.
What this person does
James holds a master’s degree in a field that I can’t quite recall at the moment, but his academic achievements are certainly impressive. He currently works in human resources at a prominent university. His role involves managing complex HR tasks, which is a testament to his professional competence.

James’s intelligence is not just confined to academic or professional achievements; it extends to practical wisdom and common sense. He has a remarkable ability to make sound judgments and handle situations sensibly. For instance, he understands that significant accomplishments require dedication and hard work. This perspective is a key aspect of his intelligence.
An example of his practical wisdom is his approach to personal goals. When he decided to learn Spanish, he immersed himself in the language and practiced regularly. Similarly, when he aimed to improve his physical health, he adjusted his diet and committed to a consistent exercise routine. He firmly believes that there are no shortcuts to success, and this mindset drives him to continuously progress and evolve. His ability to apply practical strategies to achieve his goals reflects his deep understanding and intelligent approach to life.
James’s blend of academic knowledge and practical intelligence is what makes him truly remarkable. It’s his common sense and dedication, rather than just his qualifications, that showcase his true intellect.
