To be perfectly honest, I feel that the standard of customer service has declined in my country over the last decade and I find I am frequently disappointed with the level of service received. I can recall a time recently though, when it was particularly poor and I have decided to talk about that time.
My family and I were dining out at a local restaurant which we had never been to before. We had booked the table for 7pm and arrived on time, only to be told that the table was not ready and there would be a 15-minute wait. We didn’t have a problem with that and got a drink while we waited. One hour later, we were still waiting and starving. We were given more drinks and told that it would only be a short wait before our table was ready. With hindsight*, we should have left. However, we remained calm and patient and at 8.30, we were shown to our table. We ordered straightaway and expected the food to arrive shortly after. Half an hour later, two of the four starters arrived, which my children ate, and my husband and I sat and waited for ours.
By 9.30pm, our first courses still had not appeared so I said enough is enough. I called the waiter over and asked for the bill. He looked flustered and said ‘your food is coming now’. Too late, I said. I was fuming by this point and just put some money on the table and left. We were all very hangry* and looked for the closest restaurant and saw a McDonald’s over the road.
Within five minutes, we were eating burger and chips and it had never tasted as good. We never went to that restaurant again and, unsurprisingly, it closed down a few months later.

One particularly memorable instance of poor service occurred when my family and I decided to dine at a new local restaurant. We had made a reservation for 7 pm, eager to try this place, which had recently opened. However, upon our arrival, we were informed that our table was not yet ready and that we would need to wait for 15 minutes.
At first, we didn’t mind this slight inconvenience and decided to have a drink at the bar while we waited. What started as a brief delay soon turned into an hour-long ordeal. Throughout this time, we were given additional drinks and assured repeatedly that our table would be ready shortly. In hindsight, we should have left when the wait extended beyond the promised time, but we chose to stay, hoping the situation would improve.
By 8:30 pm, we were finally escorted to our table. We promptly placed our orders, anticipating that the food would arrive in a timely manner. Unfortunately, our expectations were dashed when, after 30 minutes, only two of the four starters we had ordered were served. My children ate their portions, but my spouse and I continued to wait, growing increasingly frustrated.
As the clock struck 9:30 pm, our starters still had not arrived. I decided that enough was enough and called the waiter to request the bill. He appeared visibly flustered and claimed that our food was just about to be served. However, by then, it was too late to salvage the evening. I left some money on the table in frustration and we left the restaurant.
We were all quite hangry at that point, so we quickly found a nearby McDonald’s. Within five minutes, we were devouring burgers and fries, which never tasted so satisfying. That experience was a stark reminder of how important good service is, and we never returned to that restaurant. Unsurprisingly, it shut down a few months later, which, given the poor service, was not particularly surprising.
