IELTS Speaking Part-2 A time that a piece of equipment of yours was broken

Describe a time that a piece of equipment of yours was broken

You should say:

·         What it was

·         What the problem was

·         What you did

·         And explain how you felt about it

I have decided to talk about something that happened to me recently and it is still quite painful to talk about. I am not a particularly materialistic person and I don’t have that many gadgets, but my phone is my prized/treasured possession. The reason for this is I saved up for many months to buy it and I made a lot of sacrifices such as not going out socialising with my friends in order to be able to afford it. When I finally handed over my hard-earned cash, it was a very special moment. I used to have a cheap phone so to finally have an iPhone that I wasn’t ashamed to use was great.

Fast forward three months and I was walking down the street one day, but I didn’t realise that the bag I was holding was unzipped and my precious phone dropped out and smashed. I could have cried, but I was in a crowded place so I just picked it up and put it back in my bag. It had a screen protector on so I was hoping that it was maybe just the screen protector that had cracked.

I rushed home and got it out of my bag, silently praying that the screen was fine and still intact. I slowly peeled off the screen protector and, sadly, my worst fears were realised and there was a crack on the screen. It looked minor at first, but as soon as I touched the screen, the crack spread and covered the whole screen.

I was furious because it had been my own fault for not zipping up my backpack properly. I was still fuming several hours later when my friend popped in and asked why I was in a bad mood. I showed him my phone and he said ‘don’t worry, the screen can be replaced’. I was so relieved because I thought I would have to buy a new phone, which I didn’t have the money for, and I didn’t have mobile phone insurance. I got the phone repaired the next day and, although it wasn’t that cheap, it was a fraction of the cost of a new phone. I have learned my lesson and I am now much more careful with it.

I’ve chosen to talk about a recent incident that still stings when I think about it. Although I’m not very materialistic and don’t own many gadgets, my phone is something I deeply value. I saved up for months to buy it and made several sacrifices, like skipping social outings with friends, to afford it. When I finally bought it, using my hard-earned money, it felt incredibly rewarding. Upgrading from a basic phone to an iPhone was a significant milestone for me.

Unfortunately, just three months later, while I was walking down the street, my phone slipped out of an unzipped bag and hit the ground. I could have cried, but given the public setting, I simply picked it up and put it back in my bag. I had a screen protector on, so I hoped it might have just been the protector that cracked.

When I got home, I anxiously removed the phone from my bag and peeled off the screen protector. To my dismay, there was a crack on the screen. What appeared to be a minor crack initially quickly spread across the entire screen as I touched it.

I was livid with myself for not securing my bag properly. My frustration persisted for hours until a friend came over and noticed my bad mood. I showed him the damaged phone, and he reassured me that the screen could be replaced. I felt a huge sense of relief, as I had no mobile phone insurance and was worried about the cost of a new phone, which I couldn’t afford.

I had the phone repaired the next day. Although the repair wasn’t inexpensive, it was much cheaper than buying a new phone. This experience taught me to be more cautious with my belongings, and I now take extra care to keep my phone safe and secure.
