IELTS Speaking Part-2 A person who speaks a foreign language well

Describe a person who speaks a foreign language well

You should say:

·         Who this person is

·         What language they know

·         What he/she uses this language for

·         And explain why you think he/she learned it well

Ok, so the person I’m going to talk about is called Amy. She is one of my closest friends and we’ve known each other since primary school. We met in Year 1 but we didn’t actually become best friends until Year 3. Anyway, when we were studying in high school, she wasn’t into languages at all and hated studying French so I always felt she wasn’t a natural linguist. I was the opposite, I found French relatively easy and was able to pick it up quite quickly.

About two years ago, Amy started to get into K-Pop and although she couldn’t understand a word, she loved the music. Through listening to Korean music, she then discovered K-Dramas and she quickly became addicted to them. These two things sparked an interest in the Korean language and she was inspired to try to learn Korean. She picked up the odd word just through watching, but she knew she needed to put some effort into learning it properly.

It is an exceedingly difficult language because you need to learn a new alphabet and I expected her to give up, but she mastered it really quickly. She watched loads of YouTube videos and bought a text book to help her with the basics. Every spare minute, she had her head in that book. I’ll be honest, I thought it was a fad and she would quickly get bored and quit, but she stuck at it, which really impressed me.

Now, two years later, she is fluent in Korean – when I say fluent,

obviously she doesn’t know every single word, but she can communicate with Koreans. She still uses subtitles when watching K-Dramas because it helps her to expand her vocabulary but she can understand the gist without reading them. I have nothing but admiration for her – it is a totally different language to her native language and she has picked it up in a comparatively short time and has proved herself to be a natural linguist.

Describe a Person Who Speaks a Foreign Language Well

The person I’d like to talk about is Amy, a close friend of mine whom I’ve known since primary school. We first met in Year 1, but it wasn’t until Year 3 that we became best friends. During our high school years, Amy wasn’t particularly interested in languages and struggled with French, which made me think she wasn’t a natural linguist. I, on the other hand, found French quite easy and picked it up quickly.

However, about two years ago, Amy developed a keen interest in K-Pop. Despite not understanding any Korean at the time, she was captivated by the music. Her fascination with K-Pop led her to explore Korean dramas, and she became hooked on them as well. This newfound interest sparked her desire to learn Korean. Initially, she picked up a few words from watching, but she realized that to truly understand the language, she needed to commit to learning it properly.

Korean is known to be an exceptionally challenging language because it involves mastering a completely new alphabet. Despite this difficulty, Amy was determined. She immersed herself in the language by watching numerous YouTube tutorials and using a textbook to grasp the basics. She dedicated every spare moment to studying, which was impressive because I thought her interest would wane and she’d give up.

Fast forward two years, and Amy is now fluent in Korean. While she might not know every word, she can effectively communicate with native speakers. She still uses subtitles when watching K-Dramas to enhance her vocabulary, but she can understand the main ideas without them. I have immense admiration for her dedication and success. Learning Korean, which is vastly different from her native language, in such a short time, demonstrates her natural linguistic ability and determination.
