I was struggling to decide who to talk about because, to be perfectly honest, I couldn’t think of anyone who frequently travels by plane, but then I suddenly remembered that I have a friend, a close friend actually, so I don’t know why I didn’t think of her straightaway and she is always taking flights here, there and everywhere. I’m not entirely sure what her job title is, but she’s pretty high up in the company she works for and she oversees all their international operations so that’s why she’s required to visit lots of different places overseas.

I was talking to her a few weeks back and she was just about to go to the US for a meeting. I said to her that I was envious of her jet set lifestyle and she said that there’s nothing glamorous* about it at all. She went on to explain that she is often suffering from jet lag and has very little downtime in the places that she visits and spends all her time rushing from the airport to the hotel then to a meeting then back to the hotel then to the airport again. She said she feels like she’s in a whirlwind.

She said that she travels business class, which is one of the perks, but because she spends so much time in the air, it’s like a hotel and an office for her so she is either sleeping or doing work. She said she is sick to death of airline and hotel food and misses homecooked food.

The funny thing is that when she has a vacation, she never goes anywhere because staying at home is actually a vacation for her. She said she loves having a staycation and waking up in her own bed every morning. When we look at other people’s lives we often think the grass is greener*, but after my recent chat, I think my life on terra firma is better than being an international jet-setter.

The person I’m describing is a close friend of mine, who frequently finds herself on airplanes due to her demanding job. She is quite senior in her company and manages all of their international operations.

What the person does

Her role involves overseeing various global projects and meeting with international clients, which necessitates frequent travel. This means she’s often flying to different parts of the world for business meetings and conferences.

Why the person travels by plane

Her job requires her to travel extensively to manage and coordinate the company's global activities. This is essential for maintaining relationships with international clients and ensuring the smooth execution of global projects.

And explain how the person feels about it

Despite what might seem like a glamorous lifestyle, she finds the reality quite different. She often suffers from jet lag and experiences a relentless schedule, moving from airport to hotel to meetings with very little downtime. She described her travels as feeling like she’s constantly caught in a whirlwind. Although she travels business class—a notable perk—her time in the air often feels like a blend of a hotel and office, where she alternates between working and sleeping. She misses home-cooked meals and finds airline and hotel food monotonous.

Interestingly, when she takes a vacation, she prefers to stay at home. For her, a staycation is the ultimate luxury, allowing her to enjoy the comfort of her own bed and a break from the hectic travel schedule. Her experience has made her realize that sometimes the simplicity of home life can be more appealing than a jet-set lifestyle. This has led me to appreciate my own stable life more, rather than envying the high-flying life of a frequent traveler.
