IELTS Speaking Part-2 A (long) car journey you have been on

Describe a (long) car journey you have been on

You should say:

·       Where you went

·       What you did when you got there

·       Why you went there

·       And explain why you went on that journey by car

Most of my outings are done by car so I could have chosen from a long list of trips; however, there is one particular journey that I would like to talk about and it was memorable because it was long and arduous, but my family and I had a remarkable experience when we reached our destination. We went by car, as I’m not a fan of public transport. I can’t stand being controlled by timetables and love the freedom of coming and going when I please.

The journey in question was from Orlando to Clearwater Bay, when I was holidaying in America last year. We were staying in Orlando, but had planned to go to Clearwater, as it is famous for the wild dolphins that swim in the bay area. My cousin had told me that the journey would take roughly two hours by car so we set off at 8am, planning to arrive at around 10am. Then we would be able to have some brunch before going on the boat to spot dolphins. Well, that was the plan, but things never go to plan, do they?

About an hour into the journey, we suddenly hit traffic congestion. Annoyingly, the traffic had come to a standstill. I tried to be optimistic and said that it’s probably only roadworks and we would be on our way soon. Five hours later, we finally arrived at our destination, three hours later than planned!

Grumpy, fed up and starving, we had a quick bite to eat and then bought tickets for the boat trip. We were all in a bad mood and nobody was talking. About five minutes into the boat trip, there was suddenly a gasp and a shout of ‘look’. We looked over the side of the boat and saw the most incredible sight – a pod of dolphins jumping in and out of the water. Instantly, the grumpiness and tiredness that we were all feeling because of that horrendously long car journey disappeared and we were delighted that we had seen these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

One memorable car journey I had was from Orlando to Clearwater Bay during a holiday in America last year. My family and I were staying in Orlando, and we decided to drive to Clearwater to see the famous wild dolphins that inhabit the bay area. My cousin had informed me that the drive would take about two hours, so we set out at 8 a.m., aiming to reach Clearwater by 10 a.m., enjoy a leisurely brunch, and then embark on a boat trip to spot dolphins.

However, our journey didn’t go as planned. Approximately an hour into the trip, we encountered severe traffic congestion. The road was at a standstill, and despite my optimistic assurances that it was just temporary roadworks, the situation worsened. After five grueling hours, we finally arrived, three hours later than expected.

By the time we arrived, we were exhausted, irritable, and starving. We quickly grabbed a bite to eat before purchasing tickets for the dolphin-watching boat trip. Our mood was still sour as we boarded the boat, but everything changed within minutes.

Just five minutes into the boat ride, someone shouted, “Look!” We peered over the side of the boat and were stunned to see a pod of dolphins leaping gracefully out of the water. It was an extraordinary sight that instantly lifted our spirits. All the frustration and fatigue from the long car journey vanished, replaced by awe and joy at seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

We chose to drive rather than use public transport because I prefer the flexibility and freedom that comes with traveling by car. I enjoy being able to set my own schedule and avoid the constraints of timetables, making the car journey a more personalized and enjoyable experience.
