IELTS Speaking Part-1 Letters and Handwriting

Letters and Handwriting

Do you like to write a letter or email?

In today’s digital age, I find emails far more practical than traditional letters. The unreliability of postal systems can make letters an unreliable option. Emails provide instant delivery and the ability to confirm receipt, which is incredibly convenient. Nonetheless, receiving a handwritten letter still has a unique charm and personal touch that digital messages lack.

Do you think emails are useful?

Absolutely! Emails are incredibly efficient and can save a lot of time. They streamline communication by replacing lengthy meetings and phone calls. They also allow for easy sharing of information and links that are cumbersome to convey over the phone. Additionally, emails give me the advantage of carefully crafting my words, which is especially helpful when I'm too shy to express myself directly. As someone who isn’t fond of phone conversations, I appreciate the flexibility that emails offer.

Do you think email might one day replace handwritten letters?

It’s quite likely! The trend is already heading in that direction. For instance, in my previous job, I was able to complete all necessary documentation via email rather than sending physical letters or attending in person. Many businesses are adopting this practice, suggesting that email might eventually become the primary mode of written communication.

What sorts of letters (or emails) do you think are the most difficult to write?Complaint letters or emails are definitely the most challenging for me. I prefer to avoid conflict and am sensitive to others’ feelings, which makes addressing issues directly difficult. Additionally, crafting such communications can be complicated when dealing with language barriers, as finding the precise words is crucial. I once had to terminate an employee via email, which was a particularly painful experience for me.

Have you ever written a thank-you letter?

Yes, I have! Writing thank-you letters is something I consider important. It’s a way to express gratitude and appreciation for thoughtful gestures or gifts. I usually take the time to write a personalized note to convey my thanks sincerely. It’s a simple act, but it makes a big difference in showing someone that their kindness was noticed and appreciated.

How do you feel about receiving handwritten letters?

Receiving handwritten letters is always a special experience for me. There’s something incredibly personal and touching about a letter that someone has taken the time to write by hand. It feels more heartfelt and genuine compared to digital messages. Handwritten letters often carry a sense of nostalgia and can be cherished as keepsakes.

Do you prefer typing or writing by hand?

I prefer typing. It’s faster and more efficient, especially for longer documents. Typing also allows for easy editing and formatting. However, I do appreciate the art of writing by hand, particularly for notes or personal messages. Handwriting can add a personal touch and convey a sense of effort that typing might not.
