Doing Well in the HSC English First Paper Exam

Many students feel worried about the English exam for HSC. But if you practice with old exam questions and sample tests, it's not too hard to pass. Also, if you use some smart tricks in the exam hall, you can get a really good result.

The HSC English First Paper exam is worth 100 marks in total. These marks are split into two main parts: Reading (Part 1), which is 60 marks, and Guided Writing (Part 2), which is 40 marks.

Part 1: Reading (60 Marks)

1. Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

These questions usually ask about the meaning of a word or phrase from the passage, the main idea, the title, or some specific information.

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• Read the questions first, then read the main story or text. This helps you find the answers faster and saves time.

• Read the questions very carefully. Students often make mistakes because they don't read the questions well enough.

2. Short Answer Questions [3 x 5 = 15 marks]

Types of Questions: Questions can be either open-ended (where you can share your own ideas) or closed-ended (where you mainly use information from the text).

How to Get Ready:

• Study the stories/texts in your main English textbook very well.

• Practice with past exam questions or test questions from different schools.

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• After reading the question, read the main text again to find the information or ideas the question asks for.

• Write at least 2 or 3 points for each answer.

• If you can, show your answers in a table or chart instead of just writing paragraphs. This is extra helpful if you need to show differences between two ideas.

• Be direct and only answer what's asked. Try to give examples if you can.

• Check for spelling and grammar mistakes.

3. Information Transfer / Flow Chart [1 x 5 = 5 marks]

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• Read very carefully what the flow chart needs to be about (for example, "Write a flow chart showing the main parts of Bangla Folk music"). Here, you should only focus on the features of Folk Music, not the whole text.

• Follow the way the first part of the flow chart is set up. Try to keep the ideas in the same order as they are in the original text.

4. Summary Writing [1 x 10 = 10 marks]

Your summary should be about one-third the length of the original text. It needs to include all the main points. You must write it in your own words, but do not add your own opinions. The language should be very clear and easy to understand.

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• You May Write a good title for your summary. (not essential)

• Read the text and find the most important points.

• Then, write these main points in your own words. Avoid phrases like "This is about..." or "The summary of the passage...". Just start directly with the main points. Don't write anything that's not important.

• After writing, always read it over again to check for any spelling or grammar mistakes.

5. Cloze Test with Clues (Unseen) [0.5 x 10 = 5 marks]

How to Get Ready:

• Read English every day and get used to learning new words.

• When you learn a new word, practice changing its form (like if it's a noun, make it a verb or adjective).

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• Read the given text carefully. Then, choose the best words for the empty spaces.

• Check if you need to change the form of the word you chose to fit the sentence correctly.

6. Cloze Test without Clues (Unseen) [1 x 10 = 10 marks]

How to Get Ready:

• Read English every day and get used to learning new words.

7. Rearranging (Unseen) [1 x 10 = 10 marks]

How to Get Ready:

• Pay attention to words that link sentences, words like he/she/it, and the order of time.

• Look at how the sentences relate to each other.

• Practice a lot with rearranging questions from past exams.

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• First, try to find the sentence that is most likely the first sentence and the one most likely the last sentence.

• Then, look at how the other sentences are connected and put them in the right order, one after another. (Words that connect ideas, and how nouns and pronouns are used, can help you find the correct order).

Part 2: Guided Writing (40 Marks)

1. Interpreting Graph / Chart [1 x 15 = 15 marks]

How to Write about a Graph/Chart/Table: You can write your analysis in 3 or 4 paragraphs, like this:

• First Paragraph (Just Describe): Simply write down the information from the graph/chart in your own words, exactly as it's shown.

• Second Paragraph (Compare Things): Talk about and compare the different pieces of information given. You can split this into two paragraphs if there's a lot to compare.

• Third Paragraph (Your Thoughts/Tips): Give some thoughts or comments to make the information clearer and show the main point of the graph. You can also add some advice here.

Things to Remember:

• Make sure your writing helps people understand the graph clearly.

• Using a good variety of words can help you get more marks here.

• Your analysis must be logical and based only on the information given. Don't talk about things that are not in the graph.

2. Story Writing [1 x 15 = 15 marks]

How to Get Ready:

• You'll be given a starting line. Use your imagination and creative ideas to build the rest of the story. You have complete freedom to create the plot (what happens) and the characters.

Important Things to Know for Story Writing:

1. Plot: The order of events that make up your story.

2. Five Parts of a Story:

   • Beginning (Exposition): Where you introduce characters and setting.

   • Rising Actions: The events that build up to the main problem.

   • Climax: The most exciting or important part of the story.

   • Falling Action: Events that happen after the climax, leading to the end.

   • Resolution: How the story ends and problems are solved.

3. Setting: The place and time where your story happens.

4. Characters: How you create the people (or animals/things) in your story. You should know about different types of characters.

5. Knowing about the Theme (the main message), Tone (the feeling of the story), and Mood (how the story makes the reader feel) helps you write a strong story.

What to do in the Exam Hall:

• Give a good description of the setting to create the right mood and feeling for your story.

• Try to include talking between your characters and make each character important in their own way.

এইচএসসি পরীক্ষায় ইংরেজি বিষয় নিয়ে অনেক শিক্ষার্থীর মাঝে ভয় কাজ করে। তবে বিগত বছরের প্রশ্ন ও মডেল টেস্ট সমাধান করলে পাস নম্বর তোলাটা খুব কঠিন কিছু নয়। সেইসঙ্গে পরীক্ষার হলে কিছুটা কৌশলী হলে ভালো ফল করা সম্ভব।

উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক ইংরেজি প্রথম পত্র পরীক্ষার সিলেবাস অনুযায়ী, মোট নম্বর ১০০-এর মধ্যে ৬০ নম্বর থাকবে Reading (Part 1) অংশে এবং ৪০ নম্বর থাকবে Guided Writing (Part 2) অংশে।

• প্রশ্ন ভালো করে পড়তে হবে। অনেক সময় প্রশ্ন ভালো করে না পড়ার কারণে ভুল উত্তর করার প্রবণতা শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যে লক্ষ্য করা যায়। Read the questions very carefully. Students often make mistakes because they don't read the questions well enough.

প্রশ্নের ধরন (Types of Questions): Open ended (নিজস্ব মতামত প্রদান করা যায়) এবং Closed Ended (এ ক্ষেত্রে passage-এর তথ্যই প্রাধান্য পায়) দুই ধরনের প্রশ্ন থাকতে পারে।

প্রস্তুতি পরামর্শ (How to Get Ready):

• সিলেবাসে অন্তর্ভুক্ত বোর্ড বইয়ের passage সমূহ ভালো করে অধ্যয়ন করতে হবে। বিগত বছরের প্রশ্ন অথবা বিভিন্ন কলেজের টেস্ট পরীক্ষার প্রশ্ন অনুশীলন করা যায়। Study the stories/texts in your main English textbook very well. Practice with past exam questions or test questions from different schools.

পরীক্ষার হলের কৌশল (What to do in the Exam Hall):

• প্রশ্ন পড়ার পর মূল passage পড়ুন এবং প্রশ্নে চাওয়া তথ্য বা ধারণাসমূহ passage-এর কোন অংশে আছে সেটা খুঁজে বের করুন। After reading the question, read the main text again to find the information or ideas the question asks for.

• প্রতিটা প্রশ্নের উত্তরের জন্য অন্তত ২/৩ টা পয়েন্ট লিখুন। Write at least 2 or 3 points for each answer.

• সবগুলো উত্তর passage আকারে না লিখে যদি table বা chart আকারে উপস্থাপনের সুযোগ থাকে সেইভাবে উপস্থাপন করুন। বিশেষ করে দুইটা ধারণার মধ্যে পার্থক্য লিখতে বলা হলে Table আকারে উত্তর করা যেতে পারে। If you can, show your answers in a table or chart instead of just writing paragraphs. This is extra helpful if you need to show differences between two ideas.

• To the point উত্তর করার চেষ্টা করুন। সুযোগ থাকলে উদাহরণ দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করুন। Be direct and only answer what's asked. Try to give examples if you can.

• Spelling-Grammar Errors হচ্ছে কিনা খেয়াল রাখুন। Check for spelling and grammar mistakes.

• প্রশ্নে কোন বিষয়ে Flow Chart লিখতে বলা হয়েছে তা ভালোভাবে পড়ুন (যেমন পরীক্ষায় চাওয়া হতে পারে- Write a flow chart highlighting the predominant features of the Bangla Folk music)। এ ক্ষেত্রে পুরো passage নয় বরং Folk Music এর বৈশিষ্ট্যগুলোর ওপরই Flow Chart লিখতে হবে। Read very carefully what the flow chart needs to be about (for example, "Write a flow chart showing the main parts of Bangla Folk music"). Here, you should only focus on the features of Folk Music, not the whole text.

• Flow Chart-এর ক্ষেত্রে প্রদত্ত Phrase এর Structure টা অনুসরণ করে বাকিগুলো লিখতে হবে এবং Passage-এ যেভাবে আইডিয়াগুলো সাজানো সেই Sequence বজায় রেখে লিখার চেষ্টা করতে হবে। Follow the way the first part of the flow chart is set up. Try to keep the ideas in the same order as they are in the original text.

4. Summary Writing [1 x 10 = 10 marks]

Summary হবে মূল Passage-এর ১/৩ অংশ। Passage-এর Main Points গুলো সামারিতে অন্তর্ভুক্ত হবে। নিজের ভাষায় লিখতে হবে কিন্তু নিজস্ব কোনো মতামত দেওয়া যাবে না। এর ভাষা হবে খুবই প্রাঞ্জল ও সহজবোধ্য।

Your summary should be about one-third the length of the original text. It needs to include all the main points. You must write it in your own words, but do not add your own opinions. The language should be very clear and easy to understand.

• Passage পড়ে মূল Pointsগুলো বের করে নিন। Read the text and find the most important points.

• তারপর মূল points গুলো নিজের ভাষায় লিখুন (This is about/The summary of the passage… এই টাইপ Expression এড়িয়ে চলুন। সরাসরি মূল Points গুলো দিয়ে লিখা শুরু করুন)। অপ্রাসঙ্গিক কোনো কিছু লিখা থেকে বিরত থাকুন। Then, write these main points in your own words. Avoid phrases like "This is about..." or "The summary of the passage...". Just start directly with the main points. Don't write anything that's not important.

• Summary লিখার পর অবশ্যই Proof reading করুন। কোনো spelling-grammar error হয়েছে কিনা চেক করুন। After writing, always read it over again to check for any spelling or grammar mistakes.

5. Cloze Test with Clues (Unseen) [0.5 x 10 = 5 marks]

• প্রতিদিন ইংরেজি পড়া এবং নতুন শব্দ শেখার অভ্যাস গড়ে তুলুন এবং কোনো শব্দ শেখার পর সেই শব্দের Parts of Speech (Verb, Adjective,Noun,Adverb) পরিবর্তন অনুশীলন করুন। Read English every day and get used to learning new words. • তৃতীয় প্যারায় Recommendations/Critical Remarks (তুলনামূলক আলোচনার প্রেক্ষিতে Graph এ প্রদত্ত তথ্যসমূহ আরো সহজবোধ্য করে তুলতে এবং প্রদত্ত Graph-এর উদ্দেশ্য ভালোভাবে তুলে ধরতে কিছু মন্তব্য করতে পারি। পাশাপাশি এইখানে কিছু পরামর্শও সংযুক্ত করা যায়)। Third Paragraph (Your Thoughts/Tips): Give some thoughts or comments to make the information clearer and show the main point of the graph. যেসব বিষয়গুলো খেয়াল রাখবেন (Things to Remember):

• Graph টা আপনার লিখার মাধ্যমে পাঠকদের কাছে বোধগম্য হয়ে উঠেছে কি-না। Make sure your writing helps people understand the graph clearly.

• সমৃদ্ধ Lexical Resource এই অংশে ভালো নম্বর এনে দিতে পারে। Using a good variety of words can help you get more marks here.

• বিশ্লেষণ যুক্তি অবশ্যই যুক্তি ও প্রদত্ত তথ্য নির্ভর হতে হবে। অপ্রাসঙ্গিক আলোচনা এড়িয়ে চলতে হবে। Your analysis must be logical and based only on the information given. Don't talk about things that are not in the graph.

2. Story Writing [1 x 15 = 15 marks]

পরামর্শ (How to Get Ready):

• প্রশ্নে দেওয়া সূচনার ভিত্তিতে নিজের কল্পনা শক্তি ও সৃজনশীলতা ব্যবহার করে গল্প নির্মাণ করতে হবে। গল্পের প্লট, চরিত্র নির্মাণের ক্ষেত্রে পরীক্ষার্থীর সম্পূর্ণ স্বাধীনতা রয়েছে। You'll be given a starting line. Use your imagination and creative ideas to build the rest of the story. You have complete freedom to create the plot (what happens) and the characters.

গল্প লিখতে হলে যেসব বিষয় সম্পর্কে ধারণা থাকা জরুরি (Important Things to Know for Story Writing):

1. Plot (The arrangement of events that make up the story) প্লট: গল্পের ঘটনাগুলো যেভাবে সাজানো হয়।

2. গল্পের ৫টি উপাদান রয়েছে। যথা- পাঁচটি অংশের একটি গল্প:

   • Exposition (শুরু)

   • Rising Actions (ঘটনাবলী বৃদ্ধি)

   • Climax (মূল উত্তেজনা)

   • Falling Action (উত্তেজনা কমে আসা)

   • Resolution (শেষ)

3. Setting (স্থান এবং সময় যেইখানে গল্প সংঘটিত হয়) সেটিং: গল্পটি কোথায় এবং কখন ঘটে।

4. Characterization (গল্পের চরিত্র নির্মাণ। বিভিন্ন প্রকার চরিত্র সম্পর্কে যথাযথ ধারণা থাকতে হবে। যেমন- Round Character,Flat Character, Protagonist, Antagonist, Foil Character ইত্যাদি) চরিত্রায়ন: গল্পের চরিত্রগুলো কীভাবে তৈরি করবেন। আপনাকে বিভিন্ন ধরনের চরিত্র সম্পর্কে জানতে হবে।

5. Theme,Tone,Mood ইত্যাদি সম্পর্কে স্পষ্ট ধারণা থাকলে কার্যকর গল্প লিখা সহজ হয়। Knowing about the Theme (the main message), Tone (the feeling of the story), and Mood (how the story makes the reader feel) helps you write a strong story.

• Setting এর যথাযথ বিবরণ তুলে এনে প্রত্যাশিত Tone এবং Mood তৈরি করুন। Give a good description of the setting to create the right mood and feeling for your story.

• গল্পের চরিত্রসমূহের মধ্যে সংলাপ ও চরিত্রসমূহের স্বতন্ত্র ভূমিকা নির্মাণের চেষ্টা করুন। Try to include talking between your characters and make each character important in their own way.
