COMPOSITIONS FOR HSC, SSC, JSC & OTHER EXAMS (M-2)

My Favourite Bangladeshi Food The food which is liked most by anyone is said to be favourite food. As I am a Bangladeshi, I have been familiar with various types of Bangladeshi foods. My favourite Bangladeshi foods are rice, dal, fish, pitha, payesh, polao-korma, zarda, khichuri, muri, chira and panthabhath etc. Bangladesh is greatly known for pitha, payesh and phirni in our this subcontinent. These types of foods are prepared specially in the month of Agrahayan and Poush when new rice is obtained. Rice is husked and turned into powder which is needed in making pithas. Payesh, Phirni etc. are prepared from rice and then mixed with sugar and spices. It is really excellent to me. I am fond of polao and korma. These are prepared in a special occasion.Polao is prepared from Chinigura, Banshmoti, Gopalbhog and other nice scented rices. Panthabhat is my favourite food also. It is the cooked rice which is kept under water and eaten in the next morning with pipper, onion, fried fish etc. I like to eat fish everyday. The curry of fish is very dear to me. There are various types of fish like hilsha, rui, katla, brigade, koi, puti etc. These are very tasty fishes. Dal, muri, chira, khai are also my favourite food. Dal is prepared from milk and chira, muri, khai are prepared from rice. Naturally, I take these in the morning. These are also used in some pitha making. Bangladeshi foods are really tasty. Though most of them are not balanced diet, these are favourite to Bangladeshi people. As Bangladeshies are not health conscious, they don't bother for a balanced diet. So, I think logically and should take a balanced meal regularly. MY FAVOURITE GAME or THE GAME WHICH I LIKE BEST Football is my favourite game. It is not an indigenous game. It came from England. Now-a-days it is an international game and is played almost in all countries of the world. In our country it is very popular. In schools, colleges, universities and also in the rural areas we play football. No game is so exciting as football. It thrills not only the players but also the spectators. Hence of all the games, I like football most. Football is played in a fairly large field of 110 to 120 yards long and 70 to 80 yards wide. There are two goal posts at each of the opposite ends of the field. The distance between the two goal posts is 8 yards, and a goal bar joins the posts above. The goal bar is attached to the post 8feet above the ground. How the game is played: The game is played between two teams. Each team has 11 players of whom one is the goal-keeper. He tries to protect the goal for his own team so that the ball does not cross the goal line between the two goal posts. Each team tries to score goals. The goal-keeper is at liberty to touch and catch the ball with any part of his body, but the other players cannot touch the ball with hands. They are allowed to touch or kick the ball with any part of their body except their hands. Besides the goal-keeper, each team has two backs, three half-backs and five forwards. A ball is placed in the centre. The referee whistles and the game starts. Then there go on the attacks and the defences. The whole game is divided into two equal halves with an interval of 10 minutes in between them. At the end of the first half each team changes its side. The party that scores more goals wins the game. When a goal is scored the whole body of the spectators burst into cheering shouts. When a party attacks, the supporters of the team encourage them and a thrilling excitement vibrates the air. From what is stated above, it is clear that the game is played according to some rules. Every player has to abide by these rules. The referee sees that the rules are obeyed during the play. The decision of the referee is final in all matters in the field. The game teaches the principle of obedience to rules. A player must observe the rules, act in strict obedience to the whistle of the referee and abide by the decision of the captain. It also teaches discipline and team-spirit. Victory depends upon co-operation among players of the same side. There is no room for selfishness and jealousy. They like the defeat in a sportsmanlike spirit. It also teaches the qualities of leadership. It makes the players prompt, cautious, careful, strong and hardy. Thus apart from giving good exercise and excellent amusement football teaches many virtues and helps in the formation of character. But one should not attach more importance to this game than it deserves. Many students spoil their studies in their craze for football. They will not only play football but also talk of football, think of football and dream of football. Rivalry in the play often leads to quarrels and squabbles. This is nothing but a waste of energy and a source evil that leads to unnecessary bitterness. I always bear in mind that football is only an interesting and exciting game. I, therefore, never pay more attention to it than it deserves and in spite of some risks that our legs or other parts of the body may be injured, I like the game best. MY FAVOURITE GAME /A COUNTRY GAME Introduction: Football is the most popular game all over the world. Likewise it is popular in Bangladesh. It is not a game of our country. The English brought it to our country from Europe. It is my favourite game. Though I don’t play football myself, I watch a lot of football matches on television / I myself play football in the field and watch a lot of football matches on television. Why favourite: There are various types of games of outdoor and indoor, of all the outdoor games, I like football very much. I have taken part in many indoor and outdoor games. Though many of them are costly, they are less thrilling than football. The play ground: Football is always played in an open field. The field is 120 yards long and 80 yards wide. At each end of the ground there is a goal post. It is made of upright posts. These are set sixteen feet apart from each other. There is a cross bar over them. All the four sides, the central place, the penalty lines etc. are marked clearly. How played: Football is played according to some rules. The game is played between two parties of eleven players. One goal keeper stands inside the goal post. He saves goal of his side. Two full-backs stand before the goal-keeper and help him. Three halfbacks help both the full-backs and the fine forwards. They try to score goals. The game is played for ninety minutes. There is rest for ten minutes after half the time. The game: There is a referee who conducts the game with a whistle. The players are bound to obey the decision of the referee. In the field, the referee’s decision is the final. Before the play begins, the players take their respective places. The referee blows the whistle and the play begins. One of the player kicks the ball from the centre of the field. Only the goal keeper can touch the ball with his hands. Merits: The game of football is a good physical exercise. If improves the health of the player and makes them hardy, strong, smart and careful. It teaches them many other good virtues like discipline, obedience and cooperation. Now-a-days, good players can earn a lot of money. Demerits: Sometimes it causes harm to the player. They meet accident and it may lead them to death. Conclusion: I think football is the most suitable for the student life. Now-a-days, students get little time for any recreation. The number of playgrounds is being decreased day by day. But they can play football in their small yards. Moreover, playing football does not take much time as some other games like cricket does. For all these reasons, football is my farvouite game. MY FAVOURITE GAME Games and sports are inseparable part of one’s life. Many games are locally arranged and played by us. But the game of cricket which had the origin in far-away land is now popular in our country. I like cricket very much. It is a very interesting outdoor game. But it is a costly one. Poor people cannot afford to take to it. The game is played between two teams each consisting of eleven members. A large stretch of perfectly flat and smooth ground is necessary for this game. A cricket field must have a turf which has to be kept soft by means of watering. It is to be maintained at heavy cost. In the absence of a good turf, cricket is played in some countries on coir matting. Other requisites of the cricket game are two wooden bats, a ball and two sets of stumps. The wickets are pitched opposite and paralleled at a distance of 22 yards. The game of cricket is now played in all seasons. In cricket defence is very important and victory often depends upon good fielding. Three fieldsmen are placed on the on-side ---- one at square-leg, one at mid-on and the third at long-on. Six are put on the off-side --- three at slip, one at cover-point, one at mid-off and the last at long-off. Of the remaining two, one is the bowler and the other, the wicket-keeper. The arrangement of the fielders, however, is often changed by the captain in consultation with the bowler. A match is sometimes played the whole day. The day is then divided into two periods-one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the other from 2 p.m. to 5p.m. The umpire’s signal marks the beginning of the play and the bowler starts bowling. After every six balls the bowler’s over ends. The batsman may be out in many ways, such as ‘bowled out’, ‘run out’, ‘stumped out’, ‘caught out’, ‘leg before wicket out’ and ‘hit-wicket out’. A run is said to be scored when the batsman, after hitting the ball, changes position once with his partner before the ball is received at the wickets. If the ball crosses the boundary line, four runs are made. When the ball hits the stumps, the batsman is said to be bowled out and when he by hitting the ball gives a catch, he is caught out. Again, while making a run, if the ball is thrown against the stumps before he has reached the wicket the batsman is run out. If he places his leg or legs before the wicket against a straight ball he is out (lbw). First innings of one side continues till the tenth player of the batting side is out. The rival team then comes of bat and proceeds in the same way. In a match generally two innings are played. The team that scores the greater number of runs, after making all the rival batsmen out, wins the match. Two umpires are appointed to conduct and supervise the game. All cases of disputes are settled by them. Cricket is a highly exciting game. It makes us cheerful and obedient. It also teaches us discipline and promptness. It teaches manliness, obedience, patience, perseverance and co-operation. But fairness is the very essence of this fame. It is a good form of exercise. It strengthens the muscles of the players and provides them vigour and vitality. Cricket, from the view point of exhibition, is an aristocratic game. It is, indeed, the king of games. And hence it is my favourite game. THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT OF MY LIFE Our life is full of many interesting events. Of them some are so memorable as cannot be erased from the memory. I also have some memorable events in my life. But the most memorable one is really very interesting and exciting. At that time I was in class nine/ten. I was chosen to represent my school at an interschool debate. The topic was related to the empowerment of the Bangladeshi woman. I seemed least ‘empowered’ to attempt the speech. My legs trembled at the thought of confronting an attentive audience, perhaps ready to smirk, the moment I faltered. However, I rehearsed my speech many times over before my teachers till I was absolutely sure of delivering it flawlessly. Finally, dawned the ‘doomsday’. I reached the scene of the competition. The sight of the stage, the lectern, the microphone was enough to leave me shaken. I overcame my confusion and uncertainty, reminding myself that nothing could possibly go wrong. A number of speakers preceded me to the stage but I was utterly oblivious of what they had to say, for I was too preoccupied with repeating my speech to myself for the last time, lest I should forget it on the stage. Finally, my name was announced. I wanted to turn back and bolt, but there was no escaping now at the last minute. I went to the stage, feigning confidence, I started with great aplomb, although my legs were shaking. All the instructions about maintaining an eye contact with the audience were swept away. I looked at the ceiling and gave my speech. Occasionally, I looked at the audience. Some, amongst the audience nodded intelligibly, much to my relief. Soon, I got carried away by my own arguments, that suddenly seemed very powerful and convincing, even though this was not the first time I was repeating them. Soon I realised that there was absolute silence. Perhaps, the audience was too bored to react. I carried on in the same vein, for I had no other choice except finishing my speech and making a dignified exit. To my utter surprise, as I walked down the stage there was thunderous applause, Apparently, I had made the desired impact. With bated breath I waited for the results. To my delight, I had won the first place, Finally, I had made my ‘debut’ as speaker. The event marked a scratch in my heart because it was the first time I was selected for something and I proved myself to be successful. So the event shall always remain in my memory. THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT OF MY LIFE My first air flight in an aeroplane is, so far, the most memorable event in my life. It has occupied an abiding place at the core of my heart. For quite a long time, I had been waiting for this mornent. And at last I got the chance. My elder brother who lives in Dhaka with his family told me that lie would send me an air-ticket from Jessore to Dhaka, if I obtained GPA-5 in the SSC Exam. I took the offer quite seriously and engaged all my energy in the study. By the grace of Almighty Allah, my efforts were rewarded, for I got GPA-5 in the said examination. My brother was quite happy and he was true to his word. It was the month of April, 2007. From the Biman Office, a bus of Bangladesh Biman took us to the airport. After checking in I was given a boarding card with my seat number on it. I was waiting in the lounge with other passengers to board the aeroplane. It was a special moment and I was full of excitement. I also felt nervous at that time. Then I walked upstairs with other passengers. A well-dressed air hostess welcomed the passengers. Another hostess showed my seat. I was lucky enough to have my seat beside a window. The pilot of the plane greeted us. He told us to fasten our seat belts properly. And then the great moment came. Our plane started to take off. I was scared at the deafening sound and the jerk. Gradually everything became right. The plane finally took off and was flying in the sky. It rose higher and higher. Houses and buildings below looked like toy houses. The plane was moving very smoothly through the clouds. In the plane, we were given orange juice to drink. The hostess also gave us some chocolates, sandwich and cakes. The flight lasted for only 35 minutes, and then landed at the Zia International Airport, Dhaka. Completing all the airport procedures in about 30 minutes, I got out and found my beloved brother waiting with a smiling face. My first air flight from Jessore to Dhaka was of a very short duration. But it had a lasting impression oil my mind. And, no doubt, it was really the most memorable event in my life.

THE MOST MEMORABLE INCIDENT OF YOUR LIFE Many incidents happen in the life of a man. Most of them are forgotten with the passage of time. Only a few incidents that have lasting impression upon the mind, remain fresh in memory. Any references to these incidents take us back to the situation and fill our minds with fresh emotions. I am still a student. I am just seventeen. Within this short span of life a few incidents happened that are worth mentioning. Among them I recollect one incident which changed the way of my life. I come of a middle class family living at Paschimgaon. I read up to class V in a village primary school. I took the Primary Scholarship examination and was awarded a talent pool scholarship. But I was not good at English. In primary schools of our country English is not taught seriously. This subject is excluded from the scholarship examination. Naturally, I remained weak in English. In my village home there was none to teach me. My mother also could not teach me this subject. Consequently, for no fault of my own I was weak in English. After the annual examination, I went to Faridpur Zilla School for admission. The Headmaster tasted me. He asked me some questions on Bengali and Arithmetic and was satisfied with my performance. But when he asked me questions on English, I could not give correct answers. He said, “You are weak in English.” I said, “Sir, please admit me, I shall make up my deficiency in this subject.” However, he was please to admit me in Class VI. My mother asked me to stay in the boarding house of the school. Accordingly, I stayed in the school hostel and devoted myself to studies. But as before I got no interest in English. Our English teacher, Mr. Sirajul Haque, was very strict. He warned the students if they did not learn their lessons. He made them kneel down and stand up on the bench. For some days I could somehow avoid his attention. But one day he stared me in the face. He could understand that I did not learn my lessons. He asked me some questions relating to the story ‘Unit is Strength’, told by Sabina’s grandfather. I could not answer. Our teacher got angry at my conduct. He ordered me to go to his table. I obeyed. But I felt nervous when he caught me by the ear. He slapped me twice or thrice and said that he would turn me out of the class if I failed to learn my lessons from the next day. I felt very much insulted. I said to myself, “Why should I not be good at English as other boys?” I determined to learn my daily English lessons regularly. Since then I did not fail in any class to answer the questions asked by the teachers. My determination became a boon for me. I improved in

English by slow degrees. By the end of the year, I improved a lot and my performance in the class was quite encouraging in the annual examination. I secured 80% marks in English. This was the highest mark not only in our class but also in the whole of our school. My performance surprised my teachers. They all encourage and advise me to be serious in studies. I listened to them and acted upon their advice. So I was crowned with brilliant success. I stood first in the SSC examination of 1981 and added a new laurel to the glory of my ‘Alma- mater’. So the event of pulling me by the ear by our English teacher acted as a turning point in my life and so I treat this incident as the most memorable incident of my life

MY FAVOURITE HOBBY Introduction: Hobby means one’s favourite occupation other than his main business. It is a useful work which can be taken up during leisure. One takes interest in it and drives pleasure by doing it in spare time without any monetary benefit. Hobby provides a cheap source of entertainment and amusement. Necessity: Many people pass their leisure time doing nothing. They waste time in idle gossip or loitering here and there. We know that an idle brain is the devil’s workshop. So, one can take up a hobby to be free from evil things and make oneself happy with useful or creative work. Besides, it relieves one from the cares and anxieties of everyday life. It may not bring riches but it provides joy. Kinds of hobbies: There are many kinds of hobbies. They are stamp collecting, angling, gardening, reading, hunting, music, coin collecting, riding, photography, painting etc. One can adopt any of them according to one’s taste. My favourite hobby: Among many hobbies, stamp collecting is my favourite one through which I can enjoy much. Stamp collecting is the act of collecting postage stamps as curiosities. Stamp collecting involves mainly two-fold considerations. I take to it as an interesting pastime. I collect stamps of various denominations. I collect stamps of various countries only to derive pleasure from them. I collect stamps, old and new, both local and foreign and put them in albums. I allot a page to each country and try to ascertain and put the dates below the stamps as accurately as possible. I am interested to become a member of Philatelic society. It will help us in procuring rare stamps of different countries of the world. Why favourtie: This hobby is mine gives many things to me. It is pleasant because it asks for no physical labour. It is of great educative value. Stamps contain various things, events, rare animals and beautiful sights. Stamps are generally issued on occasion of great national importance or in commemoration of great historic events or in celebration of the birth or death anniversaries of great men. These are not only interesting but also of both historical and geographical value. Through this, I come in direct touch with historical, geographical and political conditional of many countries of the world. It is of absorbing interest, a perpetual side issue which always accompanies me. I am forever on the look out for a new discovery, for a friend to fill up a gap. I have friends all over the world with whom to consult and exchange interest and information. It thus helps me to get a pleasant relief from the pre-occupations of life, to build up a congenial fraternity of like-minded. The other aspect of my hobby is commercial value. Sometimes, the rare stamps are sold at an expensive price. It pays handsomely by bringing in sufficient money. Again, this hobby gives me ample opportunity to acquaint the foreigners with my own country, culture and way of living. Limitation: Many great men of the world have their hobbies. But we must be careful of our hobby time. A hobby will not remain a hobby if anybody is always busy with it neglecting his main business. Conclusion: A hobby is necessary to make our life enjoyable. I am proud of my hobby. I never feel bored and tired because I work with my own interest. It may not always bring me money but it brings me a lot of recreation and amusement. It keeps me away from dullness and monotony of life. I feel exalted and mentally elated through my hobby. My hobby is a source of health, wealth and pleasure to me. My Hobby A hobby is different from work. A hobby is pursued during leisure. It gives relief from boredom and refreshes the mind after tiring physical or mental work. Hobbies differ from person to person. Manual workers may like to study books or magazines after hard physical work. Intel-lacteal workers may give rest to their minds by playing some light game like badminton or tennis. Many people take interest in gardening, photography, seeing movies etc. during their leisure time. My hobby, how- ever, is stamp-collecting. I am aware that a hobby is pursued mainly neither for earning money non for adding to one’s knowledge nor for gaining popularity. There is absolutely no selfish motive involved in a hobby is just pleasure through recreation. Money, Knowledge, popularity and such other gains are only by-products f the bobby. Secondly, a hobby is not intended to take precedence over work. It is only complementary to work. It provides new energy to our mind and limbs to do more and better work. I selected stamp collection as my hobby just by chance when I received letters from my pen-friends living in foreign countries. Very colourful and descriptive stamps of various designs were fixed on those letters. I was so much enamored of those stamps that I decided to have stamp-collecting as my hobby. Now I exchange stamps with my friends and make purchases even in the market. I am a member of number of stamp-collecting national and international societies which help me in collecting stamps of different countries. I have with me about two thousand stamps of various countries. Most of the stamps are of rare variety and my friends who see them are all praise for them. They are arranged in a number of albums in a very systematic manner. They tell us about different personages, flora and fauna, historical events, achievements in the scientific and other fields of various countries etc. Some of them denote some festivals or great or important days like the International Year of Women of Year of the Girl Child etc. I love to see them off and on. MY FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL It is very sweet to call up childhood days. All my days were not equally happy now and I often met with unhappy days. So when I feel blank and dejected, I look back on my boyhood days and try to remember the happy events of those days. My first day at school is one of the memorable days of my life. Its memory is still fresh in my mind. When I was a child my elder brother was a student. He was senior to me by three years. He went to school everyday. I pressed him to take me with him. Mother prevented him from doing it. When I attained the age of five, father proposed that I should by admitted in a school. I heard of it and was very glad. I was six years of age at the time of admission. An auspicious day was fixed for my admission. Mother washed me well, combed my hair and dressed me in new, costly clothes. Father also dressed himself in fine clothes and became ready. My father took me to the school. It was a very large building with about thirty rooms and a big hall. I was a little nervous at the beginning. But the sight of the boys of my age helped me to shake off the nervousness. My father took me to the Headmaster’s room and requested him to admit me into class 1(one). I felt shy and stood with my eyes fixed upon the ground. But his loving and affectionate words rid me of the shyness. I looked at him and he, with a smile, asked me what my name was. I told him my name. He was glad and admitted me in class one. The Headmaster gave me some instructions and asked me to go to my classroom. Suddenly, I had a feeling of extreme loneliness. I parted from my father with a heavy heart. I entered a room marked class I-A. I was very shy and took my seat on the second bench. There were twenty-five boys of my age in the class. I felt a kind of shyness when I was led there. The class teacher was a lady. She at first asked me my name and told me to sit down. My class teacher spoke to me tenderly. On the first day there was not much teaching. The school broke up at 1 p.m. My father came and took me home. My first day at school was very pleasant. I shall never forget that happy day. I have still a vivid recollection of it. My First Day at School Or, My Memorable Day Many events happened in my life long ago. I have forgotten some events. But I translucently remember some. They will remain ever fresh in my memory. My first day at school is one of such events. I was six years old when I was first admitted to school. My father taught me seriously at home. My elder brother was then reading in the local school. It was decided that I should go to that school with him. I became a bit nervous at first. It was a new and unknown world to me. ! did not know how the students would receive me. I had fear about the teachers. But my elder brother and parents encouraged me. They said that I would get playmates of my age at school. The teachers also were affectionate and sincere. Hearing this, I got over my fear and nervousness. One fine morning my father took me to the school. The school building was very big. I entered the school premises with my father. I saw many boys. Some of them were of my age. The Headmaster knew my father. He received me affectionately. He asked my name and what books I had read at home. Then i found myself fit for class Ill. I was then admitted to class III. A bearer took me to class III room. There were many boys of my age there. The class teacher asked my name. He affectionately asked me some questions. Fortunately, I answered these correctly. There were two more periods of work before the tiffin period. In the mean time, I had talks with a few boys. They received me gladly. During the tiffin period, I played with the boys. Then I began to love my school mates. The school broke up at 2.00 p.m. The boys were going out of the school with hue and cry. It was a new experience to me. I also accompanied them. My father was waiting for me anxiously. He took me home. On our way home I told him about my good impression. He became glad to hear that. However, my first day at school was an important and memorable day to me. It was beginning of my new life. I still remember that day with a heavenly pleasure.

MY LIKINGS AND DISLIKINGS . As a man I have my own likings and dislikings. They may differ from others. Likings and dislikings, depend on situation and environmental conditions. Family and social conditions may influence my likings and dislikings. Specially parental influence works well in this field. I came of a respectable family. Since my boyhood /childhood I am in the habit of saving my prayers. If once I failed to do that. I would be given corporal punishment. So it is natural that saying prayers is after my liking. When I was in my village home, I would like to catch fish with hooks in the ponds and beefs. But I disliked to destroy anything of others. I never liked to attend Jatra, Jarigan, Kabigan which were once very popular in rural areas. In my boyhood I disliked to keep myself absent from school. I liked to play various kinds of games like ha-dudu. Kabadi. football and lathi khela.' On the other hand I disliked playing cards or chess. But now I like chess, too. In my early life I woke up at 6 AM but felt too lazy to leave my bed. When I got up it was 6:30 1 had my usual breakfast with cereal and milk. I wish I had a different breakfast every morning. Now I have reached a certain period of my life. I am very happy with my family. I like to help my mother in her household chores. I like to work with my father in his fields. I don't like quarrelling with others. In respect of my taking food, I like to eat vegetables most. Sometimes I like to eat meat and fish such as hilsha fish. I like to watch TV programmes. But I don't like to watch cartoons anymore, they are really childlike. I like to play games with friends and classmates. What I like may not be liked by others. What I dislike may be liked by others as well. In fine I can say I like what is good for me and the society and dislike what can harm me and the society as a whole.

MY MOST INTERESTING DREAM Dreams are the by-products of our subconscious state of mind. Dreams are of many kinds. But the dream which I had last Sunday was the most interesting dream of mine. In dream, I was transported into a fairyland where beautiful belles were dancing and singing. I dreamt that I had gone to Paris. There I went into a night club. I saw many exciting scenes there ---Twist, Ballroom and Shake were going on. As I was watching the spectacle of dance and drama, a beautiful girl gazed upon me. I was attracted by her rosy cheeks and alluring eyes and smiles on her face. I at once recollected the famous poem of Keats known as “La Belle Dame Sans Merci.” Her silent expression of love enthralled me. I was really captivated by her charms and sweetness. She was really making her silent expressions of love to me. I thought of responding to her love. I talked to her and she passed very lovely and witty remarks upon me. Then both of us took a cup of coffee. We talked to our heart’s content. At the same time, I was recollecting the eternal lines of Shakespeare-------- . “Love is not love that alters When it finds alterations Or bends with the remover to remove.” Then I was thinking, whether her love was true or false. But I tried to be true to her. I sincerely expressed my love to her in the most unambiguous terms. We ultimately promised to be eternal friends. Soon the dance, drama and music programme came to an end. With this she also went somewhere, saying that she will be coming soon. I kept waiting for us. But she did not turn up. I was repenting over my love. I was thinking that I had been betrayed in love. As I was pondering over this heart-stricken subject, my eyes opened. I realised that I was enjoying the night life of Paris in dream. In the dream, I really came across a woman who has been described by John Keats in his profound poem “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” i.e. “The Beautiful Woman without Mercy”. The dream was interesting exciting and intoxicating.

So a library is a collection of books on various subjects. All sorts of books are available there. Every high school has a library. It is a part and parcel of the students. It contains books of reference on all the subjects as well as books of juvennile interest. Its necessity: A school imparts education through text-books mainly. Students go through their text-books, prepare their lessons and learn what they can. But only going through the text-books narrow down their knowledge. The classrooms get dull. Besides, taste differ, capacities differ. So students need a library more than their textbooks. They need a place wherein they can read freely. Our school library: We have the opportunity to enjoy a library in our school. Our school library is a house in our school where books are kept for use. It is a property of our school. Knowledge of philosophers, poets, literature and of past thinkers are stored in our school library in the form of books. It is not open to outsiders. Only the students and the teachers of the institution concerned have access to this library. But they cannot take books out of library without the permission of the librarian. Our library gradually develops as plants usually do. New books are regularly added to this library every year. Duty of the librarian: There is a librarian in our school library. He has mainly two duties. He distributes books among us according to our taste. He has to help us in the choice of books. For this reason he must have had a sharp idea about every kind of book. He has to caution us so that we may take care of the books, not to damage them when we borrow books and take them outside the library. Sometimes, he has to fine us when we lose the book. Usefulness: Our school library serves a very useful purpose. It provides for free reading according to our taste and choice. It is useful to students and teachers alike. It helps the students in many ways. To understand a text-books fully we may sometimes need other books. Then our school library comes to our help. It provides what text-books fail to do. Classroom lessons just place us on the way. Our school library enables us to follow our path freely and joyfully. When we have to write an article for the school magazine, we have to go through out-books. When we have to discuss a subject in a debate, we must consult out-books. It is our school library which can give us such an opportunity. It also helps our teachers to prepare themselves to teach their respective subjects. It helps our teachers teaching various subjects and even more. So, our school library takes us and our teachers far beyond the text-books and widens our vision. Conclusion: Our school library is of great importance to us. It enables us to grow in normal and natural way. It makes us full man. So, we should try our best for the improvement of our school library. MY NATIVE VILLAGE Introduction: An ancient theory says that God has created village and man made town. Town is modernize from village. Allah has sent us in this world for some time and we have to live in a fixed place for a certain period. In this certain period man first lived in village. Village is a very small town situated in a country area. In the foreign country village is used for a small place in another states that seems more old fashioned than a town. I have my native village. Description: The name of my native village is -------------------- . It is in the district of Chittagong. It is a nice village situated on the bank of a river. My village is near about the high road. On one side of the road there are fields and meadows. On the other side there stands the rows of houses of the villagers. The inhabitants live in the village in peace and happiness. Historical interest: The village is very old and has a long historic tradition. On one border of the village is to be found the ruins of a building. That spot indicates the reign of Mughal. There was once a very old aristocratic family in the village. But the family has long been destroyed. The house of that family which was once a centre of wealth and luxsury is now a mass of ruins. Wild animals and poisonous snakes now lived there. Life of the villagers: The inhabitants of the village are simple, innocent. They are generally poor. Only a few Muslim families are well-off. They are very kind to the villagers and do everything in their power. Occupation: Agriculture is the main occupation of the villagers. Jute and rice are the chief agriculture products of the village. There are also some weavers who made handloom cloths. There are few shops owned by some of the villagers. They supply all necessary to the people. On certain days markets are held in the place set apart for the purpose. At these markets people come here from villages for the purposes of buying and selling things. The goods in our village market are mostly cheap. Educational Institutions: The percentage of education is 70% percent in our village. In the village there is a high school which provides education to the youth and children of the villagers. For a long time it was the only school within the distance of eight to ten miles. There is also a Free Primary School attached to the high school. The village has a post office which has got wire connection in it. Communication: Communication to and from our village are easy. A good road runs from the district headquarters to the village. There is also boat service from the village to Chittagong. Sanitation: The sanitation of the village is good. As the village is kept neat and clean. It is rarely visited by the epidemics. In the village there is a small charitable dispensary run by the District council. Besides there are some good physicians in the village. Conclusion: Native village is that place where I was born and lived the first year of my life. People now believes in modernism. To modernise their life people left village and come to the town. Thus in these day when villages are being deserted, our village is a dwelling place of peace and happiness. It is hoped that the village will make further progress in the near future.

MY NATIVE VILLAGE The name of my native village is Sherpur. It is a well-known big village in the district of Jhenidah. A canal flows through this village. The village is situated in Sailkupa Thana in the district of Jhenidah. The village is two miles long and one mile broad. The area of the village is about 2 square miles. There are about four thousand people in our village. Most of them are Muslims. There are also some Hindus here. Most of our people are farmers. Some are businessmen, some fishermen, some officers, some teachers, some potters etc. There is a boys' high school which is famous all over the district. It has been imparting education to the boys of our village. There is a girls' high school in the north of this village. A district council road connects our village to the Jhenidah town. There are telephone and telegraph offices at Jhenidah at a distance of 5 miles only. There is a large market on the bank of the canal. The daily market sits every day and the hat sits twice in a week. The people of the surrounding villages come here every day in large numbers. The climate of this village is moderate. It is quite congenial to the health of the people. So most of the people living here are healthy. The natural scenery of our village is very beautiful— the canal, vast green fields, gardens etc. captivate our eyes. There is a proverb, 'Man makes the town and God makes the villages'. Our food crops and vegetables are grown in villages. Indeed the natural beauty of the village is charming. Most of our people are businessmen. So the economic condition of 'our village is sound. To me there is no place as beautiful as our village. So I love her very dearly. I am always ready to die for her good.

MY VISIT TO A BAISHAKHI MELA Bangladesh is a land of rich culture and heritage. Baishakhi Mela is a part and parcel of Bengali culture. It is perhaps the largest and most comprehensive celebration of the arts and culture of Bangladesh. It is held on the first day of the Bengali New Year. The Bengalees are all looking forward to welcome the year through this celebration. The Ramna Batamul is the centre, around which New Year celebration have spread around the city and gradually across the country. The festival encompasses exhibition, music, poetry, crafts, theatre, photography etc in the urban area. A ‘Baishakhi Mela’ is an annual gathering. It is a gathering held in villages too. Some fairs are held for a day. Some are held for days together. It is held generally in the open place or on the bank of a river or a canal. All men, women and children gather in Baishakhi Mela in large number. Fancy goods, toys, balloons, flutes, sweets and wooden things are mostly sold and children buy them. Circus parties are the common features of the Baishakhi Mela. They often bring trained small tigers, elephants, monkeys, horses and bears that show funny feats. It is a matter of pride that we celebrate our cultural identity in a true spirit through Baishakhi Mela. This year along with some of my friends I went to Baishakhi Mela held in the Dhanmondi Club playground. We went there in the afternoon. I found the fair bustling with life. There were various kinds of shops and stalls. They were full of different kinds of things such as toys, handicrafts, potteries, sweets and cakes and many handmade things. The potteries made by the students of Charukala Institute, Dhaka University attracted me most. I purchased some specimens of their potteries only. Prices of things were a great deal higher than I had anticipated. Several book-shops were also there. Children’s books were among them which were sold at a great number. In the evening a discussion was held in which the speakers were from intellectual level of our country. In the fair, people were thronged to different food shops. It also became a place for annual meeting for people. But Baishakhi Mela had a different message to give us. The cultural outlook of the young people ought to be broadened. The authorities should organise this. More fairs are to be mobile in this respect.

MY VIST TO A VILLAGE FAIR

A village fair plays a very significant role to rural economy. It is generally held every year at a fixed time. It is an occasional event. Many people gather in a village fair to buy and sell things. Moreover it is a great source of recreation to them. A fair is usually held in an open space to which communication is easy. People from many places come to a fair to buy as well as to sell. Usually it is held on occasions like the Bengali New Year's Day, the 21st February, and the Eid Day. A village fair is a gay affair. I have been to such a fair several times in my life. The fair I visited last was held in the Public Library premises in Rangpur town. On the occasion of 1st Baishakh I visited the fair. I was accompanied by two of my bosom friends. There were different types of stalls in different rows, such as: book stalls, stalls for dolls and toys, electronic goods, handmade goods, etc. All stalls were almost crowded. We moved round the fair and enjoyed it very much. My friends and I rode on merry-go-rounds. I bought some toys for my younger sister.

A village fair is a place of fun and enjoyment for the people living around. It dispels the monotony of the village people. All categories of people- poor and rich, children and adults, men and women, illiterate and educated come crowding in the fair and enjoy the best of it according to their area of interest. The most delighted are the children. They buy cheap flutes, toys, sweets and fancy goods, ride the merry-go-round and feel terribly happy and excited.

It is, thus, crystal clear that a village fair bears a great significance to the people. Villagers take it as a soruce of their recreation. It helps them to remove dullness from their mind. Moreover it plays a vital role to the rural economy also.
