Completing Sentence


Rule — 01: So that / In order that

যাতে / যার ফলে

Structure:Subject + verb + so that / in order that + subject + can / may / could / might + verb (present form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. You should study hard so that ________.


    → You should study hard so that you can pass the exam.

  2. I bought a dictionary in order that _______.


    → I bought a dictionary in order that I could learn words.

  3. We eat so that ________.


    → We eat so that we may live.

  4. The boy reads more so that _______.


    → The boy reads more so that he can make a good result.

  5. The farmers sow good seeds so that _______.


    → The farmers sow good seeds so that they may have a good harvest.

Note:If the first clause is in the present tense, use "may" or "can," and if it's in the past tense, use "might" or "could."


Rule — 02: So ___ that

এতই ___ যে

Structure:Subject + verb + so + adjective / adverb + that + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. He is so clever that ______.


    → He is so clever that he can solve any problem easily.

  2. She was so weak that ______.


    → She was so weak that she could not walk at all.

  3. The load is so heavy that _____.


    → The load is so heavy that he cannot carry it.

  4. The man was so ill ______.


    → The man was so ill that he could not move an inch.

  5. The sailors' throats were so dry ______.


    → The sailors' throats were so dry that they could not speak a single word.


Rule — 03: In spite of / Despite

সত্ত্বেও

Structure: In spite of / Despite + noun phrase + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. In spite of his illness, ______.


    → In spite of his illness, he went to school.

  2. Despite being poor, ______.


    → Despite being poor, he could continue his studies.

  3. ______ in spite of being sick.


    He attended the meeting in spite of being sick.

  4. In spite of his poverty, ______.


    → In spite of his poverty, he is honest.

  5. Despite his good qualification, ______.


    → Despite his good qualification, he did not get a suitable job.


Rule — 04: Because of / On account of / Owing to / Due to

জন্যে / কারণে

Structure: Because of / Owing to / Due to / On account of + noun phrase + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. Because of drought, ______.


    → Because of drought, crops did not grow well last year.

  2. He has succeeded on account of ______.


    → He has succeeded on account of his hard work.

  3. ______ because of rain.


    He could not go out because of rain.

  4. Everybody loves him because of ______.


    → Everybody loves him because of his honesty.

  5. On account of his illness, ______.


    → On account of his illness, he could not attend the meeting.


Rule — 05: Instead of / In lieu of

পরিবর্তে

Structure: Instead of / In lieu of + noun / gerund phrase + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. Instead of going there, ______.


    → Instead of going there, we stayed at home.

  2. ______ instead of learning his lessons.


    He went to bed instead of learning his lessons.

  3. ______ in lieu of history.


    In lieu of history, I took economics.

Rule — 06: Too ____ to

এত যে ____ না

Structure: Subject + verb + too + adjective/adverb + (for + noun/pronoun) + to + verb (present form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. He is too young _______.


    → He is too young to carry the load.

  2. The problem is too difficult for him _______.


    → The problem is too difficult for him to solve.

  3. She talked too fast ______.


    → She talked too fast to understand.

  4. The man is too old ______.


    → The man is too old to work.

Rule — 07: Too much / Too many

অতিরিক্ত / অনেক বেশি

Structure: Subject + verb + too much (uncountable noun) / too many (countable noun) + noun + to + verb (present form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. There is too much noise ______.


    → There is too much noise to concentrate on my work.

  2. He has too many friends ______.


    → He has too many friends to handle at once.

  3. ______ too much traffic on the road.


    There is too much traffic on the road.

  4. She drinks too much coffee ______.


    → She drinks too much coffee to fall asleep easily.

  5. The students have too many tasks ______.


    → The students have too many tasks to complete by the deadline.


Rule — 08: Enough ____ to

যথেষ্ট ____ যাতে

Structure: Subject + verb + adjective / adverb + enough (for + noun / pronoun) + to + verb (present form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. He is smart enough ______.


    → He is smart enough to solve the puzzle.

  2. The room is large enough ______.


    → The room is large enough to accommodate everyone.

  3. You are old enough ______.


    → You are old enough to make your own decisions.

  4. The boy is strong enough ______.


    → The boy is strong enough to lift the bag.

    → The food was hot enough to burn my tongue.


Rule — 09: As soon as

যত তাড়াতাড়ি সম্ভব

Structure:Subject + verb + as soon as + subject + verb (present / past) + other words.

Examples:

  1. I will call you as soon as ______.


    → I will call you as soon as I reach home.

  2. She left the room as soon as ______.


    → She left the room as soon as the meeting ended.

  3. ______ as soon as the bell rang.


    The students rushed out as soon as the bell rang.

  4. As soon as I saw him, ______.


    → As soon as I saw him, I recognized him instantly.

  5. They started running as soon as ______.


    → They started running as soon as the race began.


Rule — 10: No sooner had _____ than

কিছু ঘটতেই আরেকটি ঘটে গেল

Structure:No sooner had + subject + past participle + than + subject + past tense verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. No sooner had I reached the station than ______.


    → No sooner had I reached the station than the train left.

  2. No sooner had he finished his speech than ______.


    → No sooner had he finished his speech than the audience applauded.

Rule — 11: As if / As though

যেন / যেমনটি

Structure: Subject + verb + as if / as though + subject + verb (past tense or present form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. He talks as if ______.


    → He talks as if he knows everything.

  2. She looks as though ______.


    → She looks as though she has been crying.

  3. They are behaving as if ______.


    → They are behaving as if they are the owners of the place.

  4. ______ as though he had won a prize.

Rule — 12: Whether ____ or not

যা-ই হোক না কেন / হবে কি না

Structure: Subject + verb + whether + subject + verb (present / future form) + or not + other words.

Examples:

    → I will go whether you like it or not.

  2. She is unsure whether ______ or not.


    → She is unsure whether she will pass the exam or not.

  3. ______ whether it rains or not.

Rule — 13: Unless

যদি না / না হলে

Structure: Subject + verb + unless + subject + verb (present form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. You won’t succeed unless ______.


    → You won’t succeed unless you work hard.

  2. We cannot leave unless ______.


    → We cannot leave unless the task is completed.

  3. He won’t go unless ______.


    → He won’t go unless she invites him.

Rule — 14: Neither ____ nor

না ____ না

Structure: Subject + verb + neither + noun / adjective + nor + noun / adjective + other words.

Examples:

    → She is neither tall nor short.

  2. I like neither ______ nor ______.


    → I like neither coffee nor tea.

  3. ______ neither ready nor willing to leave.


    They were neither ready nor willing to leave.

Rule — 15: Either ____ or

বা ____ অথবা

Structure:Subject + verb + either + noun / adjective + or + noun / adjective + other words.

Examples:

    → They will go either by bus or by train.

Rule — 16: So + adjective / adverb + that

Rule — 17: Too + adjective / adverb + to

অত্যন্ত / অত্যধিক যে কিছু সম্ভব নয়

Structure: Subject + verb + too + adjective / adverb + to + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. She is too ______ to ______.


    → She is too tired to continue working.

  2. The bag is too ______ to ______.


    → The bag is too heavy to carry alone.

  3. He was too ______ to ______.


    → He was too nervous to speak on stage.

    The destination is too far to reach.

    → The coffee is too hot to drink right now.


Rule — 18: So that

যেন / যাতে করে

Structure: Subject + verb + so that + subject + verb (can / could / may / might) + other words.

Examples:

  1. I am studying so that ______.


    → I am studying so that I can pass the exam.

  2. She saved money so that ______.


    → She saved money so that she could travel abroad.

  3. They exercise daily so that ______.


    → They exercise daily so that they may stay healthy.

  4. He woke up early so that ______.

    → We worked hard so that we could meet the deadline.



Rule — 19: Hardly / Scarcely / Barely + when

মাত্রই যখন কিছু ঘটে / যা-ই হোক না কেন

Structure:Subject + had + hardly / scarcely / barely + verb (past participle) + when + subject + verb (past tense).

Examples:

  1. She had hardly ______ when ______.


    → She had hardly started the movie when the power went out.

  2. He had scarcely ______ when ______.


    → He had scarcely arrived when the meeting began.

  3. They had barely ______ when ______.


    → They had barely sat down when the teacher walked in.

  4. ______ hardly finished eating when the phone rang.

Rule — 20: Lest

যাতে না / ভয় আছে যে

Structure:Subject + verb + lest + subject + (should) + verb (base form) + other words.

Examples:

  1. She left early lest ______.


    → She left early lest she should miss the train.

  2. They worked hard lest ______.


    → They worked hard lest they should fail the exam.

  3. ______ lest he should be late.


    He hurried lest he should be late.

  4. I am worried lest ______.


    → I am worried lest something should go wrong.

  5. They studied diligently lest ______.


    → They studied diligently lest they should disappoint their parents.

 

Rule — 21: As long asযতক্ষণ

Structure:Subject + verb + other words + as long as + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. You are safe as long as ______.


    → You are safe as long as I am with you.

  2. As long as there is law, ______.


    → As long as there is law, criminals will be punished.

  3. As long as we are honest ______.


    → As long as we are honest, God will help us.

  4. Wait here as long as _____.


    → Wait here as long as it rains.

  5. Allah will be with us as long as _____.


    → Allah will be with us as long as our aim is honest.


Rule — 22: Till / Untilযদি

Structure:Subject + verb + other words + till/until + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

  1. Please wait here until I ______.


    → Please wait here until I come back.

  2. They walked until _______.


    → They walked until they reached the river bank.

  3. They prayed for God until _______.


    → They prayed for God until it rained.

  4. Wait until ________.


    → Wait until the rain stops.

  5. Rajib's mother will be nursing him till _______.


    → Rajib's mother will be nursing him till he comes round.


Rule — 23: Ifযদি

Structure: If + dependent clause + main clause.

Examples:

  1. If you help me, _______.


    → If you help me, I shall help you.

  2. If I were you ______.


    → If I were you, I would not do this.

  3. I would buy the car if _______.


    → I would buy the car if I possessed money.

  4. If I were a king ______.


    → If I were a king, I could help the poor.

Rule — 24: Providing that / Provided / provided thatযদি

Structure: Providing that / provided that + dependent clause + independent clause.

Examples:

  1. You could get the job providing that _______.


    → You could get the job providing that you had good results.

    → Don't forget to visit the museum provided that you go there.

  3. In case of your indolence ______.

Rule — 25: Unless (if ___ not)যদি

Structure: Unless + dependent clause + independent clause.

Examples:

Rule — 26: So much / So many ___ thatএত বেশি ___ যে

Structure:Sub + verb + so much + uncountable noun / so many + countable noun (plural) + other words + that + sub + verb + other words.

Examples:

Rule — 27: The place whereসেই স্থান যেখানে

Structure: Subject + verb + the place where + sub + verb + other words.

Examples:

    → This is the place where many heroic sons have laid down.

  3. It is the cafe where ________.


    → It is the cafe where visitors from different countries come.

Rule — 28: The time whenসেই সময় যখন

Structure:Subject + verb + the time when + sub + verb + other words.

Examples:

    → 1952 is the time when the language movement started.

  2. This is the season when _______.


    → This is the season when migratory birds fly down here.

  3. It is the time when _______.


    → It is the time when we should come forward to help the poor.

Rule — 29: Not only ____ but alsoশুধু তাই নয় _____ আরো

Structure:Sub + verb + not only clause + but also clause.

Examples:

  2. Not only it rained heavily ______.


    → Not only it rained heavily but also there was flood.

Rule — 30: Either _____ orহয় _____ অথবা

Structure:Sub + verb + either clause + or clause.

Examples:

  2. They live either Chattogram ________.


    → They live either Chattogram or in Sylhet.

  3. Either he will come _______.

Rule — 31: Neither ____ norএটাও না _____ ওটাও না

Structure:Sub + verb + neither clause + nor clause.

Examples:

    → Neither Rimu nor Shimu went there.

  3. She will neither eat ______.


    → She will neither eat nor go to college.

Rule — 32: The + Comparative degreeচেয়ে বেশি / যত তত

Structure:The + comparative form of adjective/adverb + other words + the + comparative form of adjective/adverb + other words.

Examples:

  1. Rahim is cleverer than ______.


    → Rahim is cleverer than Karim.

  2. Mina is not intelligent _______.


    → Mina is not intelligent than Rina.

  3. The more you sleep, ________.


    → The more you sleep, the more you become lazy.

  4. The more you laugh, _______.


    → The more you laugh, the less disease you have.

  5. The harder you work, ______.


    → The harder you work, the more successful you will be.


Rule — 33: As ___ asযেমন ___ তেমন

Structure:As + adjective + as + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

    → He is not as smart as he thinks he is.

  2. She is as hardworking as ______.


    → She is as hardworking as her brother.

  3. He is not as rich as ________.

Rule — 34: More ____ thanবেশি ____ থেকে

Structure:More + adjective/adverb + than + subject + verb + other words.

Rule — 35: Too ____ toবেশি ____ করার জন্য

Structure:Too + adjective/adverb + to + verb.

Examples:

Rule — 36: No sooner ______ thanঅত্যন্ত দ্রুত ______ এর পরে

Structure:No sooner + subject + verb + other words + than + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

Rule — 39: Although / Thoughযদিও

Structure:Although / though + subject + verb + other words, subject + verb + other words.

Rule — 40: In case ofএর ক্ষেত্রে

Structure: In case of + noun / pronoun + subject + verb + other words.

Structure In order to / so as to + base form of the verb + other words.

Rule — 45: As far asযতদূর জানি

Structure:As far as + subject + verb + other words.

Examples:

    → As far as I know, the meeting is at 3 PM.

  2. As far as she is concerned, ______.


    → As far as she is concerned, everything is fine.

  3. As far as the weather goes, ______.


    → As far as the weather goes, it looks good for tomorrow.

(1) If যুক্ত clause টি present indefinite tense হলে principal clause টি future indefinite tense হবে.Structure:If + Present + Future

(3) If যুক্ত clause টি past perfect tense এর হলে principal clause টি perfect conditional (sub + would have / could have / might have + verb এর past participle) হবে।Examples:

    → If I had seen him, I might have told him the news.

  2. If they had started earlier, _______.


    → If they had started earlier, they could have got the train.

  3. If she had tried ______.


    → If she had tried, she could have succeeded.

(4) If যুক্ত clause এ subject এর পরে were থাকলে principal clause এ subject এর পর might / could / would + _____ বসে।Examples:

  1. If I were a king, _______.


    → If I were a king, I could help the poor.

  2. If I were you, ________.


    → If I were you, I would not do this.


Rule — 61: Had + Sub + Verb এর Past ParticipleSubordinate clause টিতে had + verb এর past participle থাকলে principal clause টি perfect conditional হয়।

  2. Had I possessed a vast property, _______.


    → Had I possessed a vast property, I would have established a college.

Structure:Subject + used to + verb এর base form + other words
