Questions and Answers

PART 1: Speaking Answers

1.       Using Maps: I reckon using a map on your phone is far better. It’s super handy because it provides real-time updates and can even suggest alternate routes if there’s traffic or road closures. Plus, you can zoom in for details or search for nearby places, making navigation a breeze.

2.       Last Time I Used a Map: Just a few weeks ago, I needed to find my way to a new restaurant in an unfamiliar part of town. I turned to the map on my phone to avoid getting lost, and it really helped me find the quickest route.

3.       Using a Map in a New City: Absolutely! Whenever I visit a new city, I always rely on a map. It helps me navigate those confusing streets and ensures I don’t miss any must-see landmarks or attractions. It also gives me a sense of confidence in a new environment.

4.       Reading Maps: Generally, I find reading maps pretty easy, especially the digital ones. They’re user-friendly and often come with features like voice guidance that simplify everything. However, I do struggle a bit with traditional paper maps since they can be tricky to interpret.

PART 2: Speaking Cue Card Answer

An Occasion When I Had to Do Something in a Hurry: Last month, I found myself in a bit of a pickle when I had to prepare a presentation for a work meeting on very short notice. My manager informed me just a day before the meeting that the original presenter fell ill, leaving me with less than 24 hours to gather all the necessary info, create slides, and rehearse my speech.

Despite the tight timeline, I managed to pull it off. I zeroed in on the key points and ensured my slides were clear and to the point. During the meeting, I felt a flutter of nerves but delivered the presentation confidently.

Looking back, I felt a mix of stress and accomplishment. It was challenging, but it taught me how to keep my cool under pressure and prioritize what really mattered.

PART 3: Follow-Up Answers

1.       Arriving Late to Meet a Friend: It’s usually best to be on time when meeting a friend; it shows you value their time. Of course, life can throw curveballs sometimes—unexpected traffic or personal emergencies happen. When that occurs, just communicate promptly and apologize. But if someone’s consistently late, it could strain the friendship, and they might come off as inconsiderate.

2.       Consequences for Arriving Late for Work: Lateness can throw a wrench in the workplace, disrupting the team’s flow. Ideally, companies should have a fair system to address it—maybe verbal warnings or tracking repeated offenses. If someone’s frequently late, there should be more serious discussions about the issue. That said, employers should also consider if there are underlying reasons for the lateness, like transportation issues.

3.       Tips for Avoiding Lateness: To ensure you’re not late, planning ahead is key. Always allow a buffer for unexpected delays, whether it’s traffic or transit hiccups. Setting reminders can help too. Prepping things the night before—like outfits or work materials—can streamline your morning. Cultivating punctuality and honing time management skills will help a lot in the long run.

4.       Studying: Long vs. Short Sessions: I’d say studying in shorter blocks of time tends to be more effective than marathon sessions. Research suggests our focus starts to dwindle after about 25-30 minutes. Breaking study time into manageable chunks with little breaks keeps your mind sharp and reduces fatigue. This way, you’re more likely to retain information and remain productive.

5.       Effects of Poor Study Time Management: Poor time management can lead to a slew of issues for students. They might find themselves stressed out as deadlines loom, often leading to cramming sessions that yield lower quality work. It can also result in a shaky understanding of the material, poor grades, and imbalance in life outside of academics, affecting overall well-being.

6.       Importance of Leisure Time for Students: Leisure time is essential for students; it helps them recharge and maintain a healthy balance. Engaging in hobbies or social activities can relieve stress and boost mood. When students have time to unwind, they return to their studies more focused and motivated, which is crucial for avoiding burnout.
