He obtained a hefty stone and carefully packaged it in an elegant box. Inside, he wrapped the stone with a piece of paper containing some words. Then, he sent the box to his friend as an unpaid parcel, with the instruction "Carriage to be paid on delivery."

When the parcel arrived at his friend's doorstep, the friend assumed it must contain something valuable due to the hefty charge for carriage.
