A HAWKER

A hawker is a common figure in Bangladesh. His long-drawn trade call draws the attention of the women-folk of the house. They respond to the call the send for him. There are two classes of hawkers. Some want to sell articles and some want to buy old and used articles. The hawker who sells articles is more in number. He moves from door to door. He is seen on almost all the streets. The hawker who wants to buy old and worn out articles from the houses has a peculiar way of declaring the list of the articles he wants. He comes to the house at noon when the male-folks are away from the houses. So he can easily cheat the women-folks in price and in weight. He buys food grains, worn-out clothes and shoes, old books and newspapers. The street hawker is perhaps one of the cleverest men. They know the art of winning the heart of his customers. His manners enchant them. He does not always make a very high profit. His only point is to sell something. In spite of his wit and art, the hawker is very poor. He is too poor to maintain his family.

A hawker is a common person in Bangladesh. He goes from house to house to sell things. His loud voice attracts the attention of women in the houses. They come out or call him to see what he is selling. There are two kinds of hawkers. One type sells new things, and the other type buys old or used items. Most hawkers sell new items like clothes, toys, or household goods. Hawkers who buy old things also go door to door. They call out the names of items they want to buy, like old clothes, shoes, books, or newspapers. They often visit homes at noon when the men are not there. Sometimes, they take advantage of this and cheat women by giving less money or weighing items unfairly. Hawkers walk around all day on the streets and carry their goods. They are very clever and know how to make people buy things. Their polite behavior and friendly talk make customers happy. They do not make a lot of profit but try to sell as much as possible. Even though hawkers are hardworking and smart, most of them are very poor. They earn just enough to survive and take care of their families. A hawker’s life is full of struggle, but they play an important role in making goods available to people easily.

A street hawker is a self-employed person/ fellow. He is a very common and popular figure in out society. A street hawker is he who lives by selling goods in the street. He lives in a small hut or in a slum. He usually puts on a peculiar dress of different colours and he makes a peculiar sound to draw the attention of his customers. He carries his goods on his head or in hands or by a small van. He usually sells toys, dolls, bangles  ribbons cheap ornaments cosmetics, hairpins, Sweets, fruits, utensils etc. He moves from door to door and street to street. He is also seen at bus stand, at railway stations, at steamer ghats or at launch ghats. He is very sociable, clever, open-minded and friendly. School-going children, girls and women are his main customers. He-sells goods at a cheap rate. He knows his business time very well. He is very expert in attracting his buyers and customers. He appears to his customers when the house masters are out of doors and women are free from domestic works. He works relentlessly from morning till dusk . He leads an ordinary life. He lives from hand to mouth. Yet he is happy because he earns honestly. His importance is very great in. our social life. His service has made our life easier and happier. So we should love a street hawker from heart.

A street hawker, an itinerant petty businessman, conducts his trade in a variety of wares informally and publicly, advertising his goods through vociferous hawking. Given his familiarity, such hawkers are ubiquitous, appearing in large numbers at locations such as schools, fairs, street corners, and railway stations. Other hawkers, in contrast, purchase a range of items such as empty bottles, old newspapers, magazines, books, plastic and tin containers, and broken household items, which they then sell for profit. Donning a nondescript shirt and pajamas along with a large turban on his head, a street hawker carries his materials on his head, in hand, or occasionally in a small cart. Often, he carries a bell in his right hand and a cane stand in the left, and skillfully employs his cunning to attract the attention of potential customers such as schoolchildren, villagers, and passersby. Although a street hawker purchases goods at a lower cost, his profit margins are respectable. Moreover, such hawkers offer convenience, selling goods at cheaper prices than those available in markets, but their offerings may also be spurious and sub-standard. Therefore, one must exercise caution while purchasing goods from street hawkers. Hawkers are valuable members of society, serving us in many ways by providing ready access to goods on our streets during sweltering summers and biting winters. Their services save our time and prevent inconvenience. Nevertheless, the life of a street hawker is arduous and fraught with difficulties. We ought to be sensitive and compassionate towards them and respect their dignity of labor.
